carbon filter

can anybody tell me what i need to make a carbon filter,
can i use the filter sheets that are used for cooker hoods.

if i could find a way to stop the smell from 4 plants. i would
have my oulet going into the attic , instead of going out the gable end, that would mean drilling a 6 inch hole, which i dont fancy doing due to nosey neighbers

i want to get rid of all the smell........is this possible ?
