After germination im gonna place my seeds into rockwool cube...then once the plant breaks the serface can I put it under my 250 watt mh as long as heat is not a problem? Can it go under lighty as soon as it goes into rockwool?Should i wait for the first or second leafset before putting it under the light? I would like to just put the germinated seed in a 1"x1" rw cube and then in hydroton and stick them right in my cabinet with the mh on 18/6. start nutes on 2nd leafset at 1/4 strength.... should work ok...aye? I really dont want to go and buy anymore lights ............I have a 250 watt MH for veg and a 250 HPS for flowering here is my setup....http://forum.grasscity.com/grow-room-design-setup/528973-so-what-do-ya-think.html Thanks Peeps.
Once her cotyledons pop out you can stick her under the light, just keep the MH light about as far away as you can get her until the first set of TRUE leaves grow in, then you can move her down. The cotyledons (which is what pops from the seed and is NOT a set of leaves) do not need a whole lot of light to grow, but they do need light to photosynthesize and grow some leaves. As long as you understand that the first set of what looks to be leaves is not really leaves, then you can follow me here. You can either take the seeds in the rockwool cube and place them directly under the light, or you can just wait until the pop up. They will eventually pop up in the dark, but will most likely look incredibly odd because they will be pale and not green. Soon as they get light, they will start to open up more, turn green, and your true leaves will start to grow. It is important that once the plant actually sprouts out of the rockwool cube that you start to give it some light, and that you maintain the cube being wet. If it gets dry, it will die, quickly. I could be wrong on this, but once it sprouts if you don't give it light soon, it will die from that too, so indeed make sure to give it light once she pops. I always germinate my seeds until a root is about 1/4 inch long, and then I put them under my lights and wait for them to present themselves to the world . But, I veg under CFLs that aren't too pricy to leave on. As far as using nutes, just make sure you wait until your second set of REAL leaves grow in before you start nutes, and 1/4 should be good.
ya the MH wont hurt them, but if you have a soft white flourescent that will allow them to grow through the seedling phase faster and healthier.. but if u do use the MH then u want it at least 3 feet away and 4 feet if u have enough room
Appreciate the feedback..... So the plan is germinate until seed cracks and then put in rockwool and directly under the drip under the MH. And ill raise the mh up as high as possible...nutes at 1/4 strength after 2nd leafset....
Would 4 of these cfls be better for the seedlings first week or so? Energy Saver, uses only 23 Watts Popular Daylight Colour Value Pack 1600 Lumens 23W=100W 10,000 Hours
you can use the 250 which will do very well but could burn the young seedling if it is to close but if you are thinking of getting new lights your best bet would to get a single or dual T5 you can get the dual lights for $70 or you can get the single bulb for around $30 and they do great on seedlings thats what i use on my seeds & clones and i have almost 100% success rate only a few seeds didnt sprout due to bad gentics you can soak the rockwool in nutes at 1/4 strength with a pH of 5.5-6.0 and ppm of 300-400 so you dont have any nute lock out or deficiency and idk if you using a pre-gemination method ex. paper towel or cup of water but place the seedling with tap root facing down after tap root has made a u shape that always makes my seedlings sprout really fast compared to other methods i have tried Good Luck and hope everything works out what strains are you growng??? and are you using fems seeds ?
So I went out this morning and got two 42 watt 6500k cfls and two 26watt 5000k with a couple of reflectors...Im gonna put these in my cabinet until the 2nd leafset or so... then i will fire up the MH. Should be ok with 4 seedlings for a cpple weeks, and with the cfls a cppll inches from the seedlings i should be able to keep the stretch to a minimal, aye? I have a few strains...not sure which ones to start with... I have 2 each of the following and the GHS are fem. GREENHOUSE SEEDS: Arjans Haze #1 White Widow A.M.S. White Rhino Arjans Haze #3 GROW DOC: ADHD Santabubble bubbledust angledust mummia .....and whatever freebees Gypsy's Nivana sent... seeds should be here in the next few days. Thanks again for all the great feedback...I want this first indoor grow to go as smooth as possible.
