Cannabutter. Optimal temperatures

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by ganjaclart, Aug 14, 2017.

  1. Hi guys.
I've been making cannabutter the past few months. This is my recipe for an 1/8 of regular skunk.

Prep phase: wrap loosely ground bud in foil and Decarb at 250F for 25mins in oven. I am using a seperate oven thermometer to monitor the temp.

    Melt 1/8 lb of butter.
Extraction phase: Add decarbed weed and simmer on "low" for 90mins.

So far the result is pretty good. For 1.5g of the cannabutter - Effects kick in 1-2hrs and last about 3-4hours.

    My questions are...

    1. Is the decarb temperature/timing optimal?
    2. During the extraction phase. What is the optimal temperature for the simmer? Alot of recipes say simmer on low. I'm sure this will vary for many people.

Would definitely appreciate any advice on my methods and would really like to know the optimal temperatures for the decarb and extraction.

    Thanks all!

  2. Your decarb is good, but many people use either 250 F for 30 min, or 240 F for 40 min.

If you are straining the butter, then you are leaving half the medicine in the strained out sludge.
That's ok if you can use the sludge medicine for something else, but most of us probably prefer that all the medicine goes into the medicine.
You can get 100% of the potency into edibles by grinding decarbed herb to powder, and then using the whole herb. My preference is to either mix it with nut butter, nutella, or bake it into cookie or brownie mixes. Downside: there will be slight herb taste, a small price to pay for making the herb go twice as far.
Another way to avoid straining losses is to use 95% ethanol to extract cannabinoids, because unlike oils, ethanol is excellent at extraction, and leaves very little medicine in the sludge, assuming a long soak.

  3. Thanks for reply dude. Thanks for confirming the decarb deets.
Good shout with the straining info. I am actually not straining and keeping all the material in the butter. I kinda like that herby flava.

For the extraction I've read that simmering at 212F to 220F should be ok. Is that about right?

  4. When using whole, ground herb, extraction (which is just dissolving of cannabinoids into oil) isn't necessary, because you are ingesting all the cannabinoids available anyway. The issue is whether our digestive systems can get at the cannabinoids locked inside the tiny, ground herb particles, and whether heating the herb in oil makes it more digestible.

At one extreme, I've used decarbed, powderized herb mixed with nutella immediately after decarb, and it works just fine without any additional heat.

At the other extreme, I've baked decarbed powderized herb into brownie mixes at around 350 F for 30 min (not the internal temp), and they came out fine.

I've been unable to find reliable in-oil decarb times, so it's hard to know how much over-decarbing happens when heating already decarbed herb in oil, but reports I've seen indicate that decarb happens much slower in oil than in air.

Anything you do is probably ok.

    Standard decarb = 240 F for 40 minutes.
Mix weed with just enough coconut oil to cover = Mud pie time. Don't need more oil that that.
1/6th lecithin by volume will roughly double the perceived effects.
Heat weed oil mixture 220 F for 20 minutes.
    Freeze
    Reheat
    Done

Stainless steel cat food dishes from PetCo are the perfect size for my canna oil making.
An old toaster oven gets it all done outside and keeps the stink out of the house and the wife happy.
    Basic recipe
5 grams decarbed hash = 10 if working in weed
    Decarb 240 F for 40 minutes
    1 tablespoon coconut oil
    1/2 teaspoon lecithin
Combine and heat 220 F for 20 minutes
    Freeze
    Reheat and done.

  6. Thanks for the replies all.

Good shout with the lechtin! I'll check that out.

Also wanted to check if the weed to butter ratio makes sense. Ie. 1/8oz (3.5g)weed to 1/8 lb butter (56g butter).

Although since I'm not straining. That shldnt even matter right?

  7. 3 grams of weed - more like 3 tablespoon of butter not an 1/8th pound.
I do 5 grams of hash to 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.

15 grams of hash here and 3 tablespoons of oil.
