Can weed cause depression?

Discussion in 'Apprentice Marijuana Consumption' started by HippieTrippyBudGirl, Aug 11, 2011.

  1. Does anyone know? I recently started smoking again and seem more depressed? BUT, I have been off of one of my bipolar meds, too, so that could be it, but it didn't start until around the time I started smoking. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Yep, it's probably the meds not the weed bro. If you're bipolar then you're gonna go through depression cycles anyways. Ride it out, brutha.

  3. No. I was just thinking today, without the whole drug scene and weed... I probably would have commited suicide by now...

  4. imo i think that weed makes you forget about depression and other mental things and if you got bad depression yea it will effect u badly when youre not smoking

  5. ...

Why did you even ask this?
Not trying to be an ass, but really?

  6. It won't make you depressed, but it can bring out depression that is already there. People in general are good at suppressing emotion, but smoking a bowl makes you let your walls down, so to speak. The fact that you are taking bi polar meds already makes me think it's not really the pot causing the depression, because depression was already an issue for you. Maybe getting back on your meds will help. But I always recommend getting to the root of whatever is making you depressed in the first place. Feel free to message me if you ever want to talk. I run a support group, so it won't bother me.

  7. Well, thanks to all of you. I was hoping it wasn't the weed, because I'm not going to stop smoking! Mjmama, special thanks to you. I'm sure I'll be messaging you!

  8. In theory it weed can make you depressed. I'm kinda in the same situation where I go on and off my meds or just forget to take them. I like to think this is usually the reason behind me feeling depressed because when I was first depressed and didn't start taking a cocktail of medication, smoking actually made me feel better. But that's just how it worked for me.

  9. i get depressed when i run out lol. but in all seriousness it shouldnt. weed usually lifts my spirits

  10. I usually find the depression is worse when I'm not smoking, like the day after I smoke??

  11. Weed cured my depression, i believe that this plant is truly a medicine :smoke:

  12. Do you exercise and eat a healthy diet? If not, you should start to right away. Studies have shown that exercise and a healthy diet prevent depression. Exercise and a healthy has also shown to help with other types of psychological problems.

"Bipolar disorder can be a psychologically painful illness, and many people turn to alcohol or drugs for relief. Up to 60% of people with bipolar disorder also have a substance abuse problem. This self-medication may give you some temporary relief, but it will make your condition worse over time."

You might as well quit using cannabis, I also have quit so your not alone ^_^

  13. Not going to lie, this question is pretty stupid. Maybe it is just me, but it won't cause depression unless you let it. Just lighten up.

  14. weed is all that takes depression away bro

  15. weed helps with my depression, it doesn't make it worse. I think it's the meds as well.

  16. Speaking from experience, yes. I get more depressed when I'm not high, whenever I start smoking again. But, I agree with the person who said it brings out emotion that you're suppressing.
"When you smoke the herb, it reveals you to yourself."
It just gives me an opportunity to better understand my depression.

  17. Everyone's brain chemistry is different. Just because one person can smoke weed every day and have no repercussions doesn't mean that everyone else will be able to do the same. How about not smoking for a bit to see if the herb is what is causing you the problems. I have never had any negative reactions to herb but I have a friend that was bi polar and had bad anxiety etc etc and when he would smoke and finally come down it wasn't pretty. He doesn't smoke anymore. It isn't a cure all for everyone.

  18. Just think positive thoughts if you dwell on every mistake you made in the past you will be depressed. Live for today one day at a time.

  19. Weed is classified as a depressant, so I can see why people would wonder if it causes depression. Honestly, the last thing a depressed person needs is your unhelpful comments. If you don't have problems with depression, or info on how marijuana effects depression, why even comment on this thread. It's not always as simple as not letting yourself be depressed.

  20. stop smoking for a day or 2 and see how u feel, ull know. eveyone is different. There is no exact science .
