Can someone help me with picking a light?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by alco0515, Aug 29, 2022.

  1. Looking for good light recommendation for a 4x4 tent, probably 6 plants?

I have used two of these lights in the past and it worked out well, especially for $60-$70.

Looking to move to 1 good light with the driver on the outside for heat purposes.

    What options should I consider?

  2. So there are probably a lot of folks out here with better advice / experience, but here is my personal anecdote.

I started with an mars Hydro TS-1000 in a 4x4 tent, very quickly found out I needed more light, so I just started adding lights, including blurples similar to yours (which I did 2-3 grows under)

Eventually, after looking at some spectrum graphs and PPFD maps, I scraped together the cash for an SF-4000 from spider farmer, which seems to have no problem doing 4x4 or even 5x5 coverage in flower, it also really upped the bud size and quality being able to put more light on the plants.
I went from this to this, (lights raised for pic, typically I keep them about 18 inches off the canopy)

Anyway, grabbing the bigger light was a huge upgrade to my bud quality, so I'd get something of at least similar size and output (1,000ppfd+ on the canopy capable light, even though you won't turn it up to the max until flower) if you want to run a 4x4ish grow space.

Also be aware that a lot of these big lights can put out 1400+ ppfd at 12-18 inches from the canopy, which can fry plants if you run it at 100% unless you have some big healthy girls that can handle that level of light.

There are probably cheaper light rigs of the same performance you can build yourself or buy, but not gonna lie, Spider farmer had a decent amazon day sale where it was about $100 off. Otherwise I've noticed very similar performance from the "major" brands (like HGL, mars hydro, etc), so I typically go by price (provided the light has the correct spectrum and output / coverage area I want)

Simplifying, and upgrading to bigger (but less) lights really took my grow to the next level, as long as you don't overload the canopy with light, and keep your water / nutes at appropriate levels. This was the yield from one 5-gal dirt pot Jack Herer plant under the bigger lights (the gelatos did even better)

If you can afford it, I say get the best quality light you can that provides the coverage you need without being overkill.

(also facebook marketplace, craigslist etc, can also occasionally have some great deals on lights via divorce sale or similar.)

Anyway apologies if you knew any or all of this, but it looks like I was operating under a very similar scenario to yours, and I can say upgrading from the blurples to nice board or bar full spectrum LEDS made a big difference!

  4. Thanks a ton for this in depth reply. It is literally the same situation I am in. I've done 2 grows now but I definitely need to upgrade the lights, and the heat output inside the tent drives me nuts. I have to feed AC directly into the tent. SF seems to be the consensus everywhere I look. The driver is able to be placed outside the tent right?

  5. I've got a top of the line (when it was out) HLG 480w in my 4x4, and a dirt cheap Lenofocus120-150w in a 2x2. Both have performed exceedingly well. The cheap light does not have the 301 LED's but has been just fine for 4 grows now.

  6. Have in operation twenty of the HLG 2V288 R spec QB's @ 160 watts per board .
86 square feet of grow space .
I am happy with HLG boards

  7. For the same money you can get one of these with $30 coupon checked.

  8. I've left everything on the boards myself (how they came installed), but it looks like you could just unscrew them, although the cords are not overly long to run outside a tent, this is about the best angle I can get on them for you, hope it helps.
