can i germinate my seeds in toilet paper instead of using paper towel?

  1. hi guys, just wondering

  2. I am going to say that I don't think so. Papertowels will hold up a bit when wet while the toilet paper would perhaps start to fall apart.

  3. I agree with mrsed - you don't want to damage the tap root trying to remove the toilet paper lint -- the less handling the better when you move from the towel it into the medium/soil/rockwool/etc

  4. in a pinch ive used toilet paper. It worked just the same. I suggest that you just make 2 massive rolls around your hand, creating (2) 4X4 squares that are about 1/8" thick. wet them both, then place the seeds between the two.

as said earlier, be careful when you pull them apart.

  5. ok i see, thanks guys

  6. hmmm so it still works fine, i just have to be careful? thanks man

  7. Why use paper towel method? The chance of damaging the root is caused entirely by the paper itself. Do you have any old pill bottles lying around? Any other small semi-clear container that is airtight? I put a few seeds into my meds bottle (mmj patient), filled with water until water was about half way up the seeds (not enough to make them float), and put it under a cup (to block light) ontop of my growbox (to keep it warm). My success rate has been 10 out of 10 using this method. Cool thing about this is, they can actually sustain themself in the shallow water for an extended period (like 5 days in one case, before I planted) and will contue growing out its root tip.

As soon as the seed cracks and the white tip peeks out, I'd put it in soil (tip down!).

  8. is the paper towel method really that bad? will definitely have to do more research....

    thanks for your input.

  9. it's not really terrible. i used toilet paper and got 2/4 but i was also using what i thought were dead seeds :p i'd say toilet paper is okay. i went to the store and thought i bought paper towels...i came home and son of a bitch it was tp.

  10. lol

yeah i got some paper towel now

    thanks

  11. I've used the paper towel method with roughly 95-100% success rate for quite some time now.

Just make sure the towel stays moist, warm, and dark.

  12. i shouldn't have to re-wet the paper towel more then once should I?

    cheers

  13. i dont add water ever, i just place the paper towel into a ziplock bag and forget about it.

  14. excellent

    thanks mate.

  15. I just discovered a new, controversial, 'out-of-the-box' germinating method. I put a seed in a moist cup of soil and 72 hours later, a sprout appears. Who knew! ;)

  16. lol:p

  17. That will never work :D

  18. funny :D

doesnt work so well though if ur planting in cubes.

if i were too excited to go to the store for some paper towels now that i got seeds and had to plant them right now...in toilet paper. id be sure that it was regular toilet paper. not that ultra soft aloe vera stuff that has bookoos of chemicals mixed in.

even though its "safe" for u to wipe ur starfish. that doesnt mean u need to wrap up ur babies in them.

  19. although i don't like to conclusions, but if you were going to skimp on paper towels for germination (for reasons i assume relate to the possiblity you're still living at home with your parents?), how are you going to deal with getting proper lighting, odor control, soil and nutes?

  20. yes it does work the same and if you get the toilet paper thick enough you dont have to worry about it peeling apart as long as you dont give it too much water... i have tried this and it works just as good as paper towels
