Yo. I meditate fairly often and find it very easy and useful. As I've improved with it, I've discovered that I can willingly turn on some kind of "mental state" whilst I am meditating. It is characterized by an extremely intense feeling in my head, kind of like the feeling of my mind expanding quickly in all directions. It's very difficult to maintain because it leads to some slight but difficult to control muscle jerking, and also because it is hard to focus enough to breathe and do this at the same time. There is also some visual effects if I go "deep enough". Anyone have any evidence as to what this might be? I'm thinking it falls into the third eye category but I would like some kind of scientifically accurate information. Cheers
orgasim. haha. I have done this a few times, but it takes me a minute to get to the point. I think it has something to do with your energy just hitting a flow within your mind, pushing ideas and everything to the surface.
my dick remains soft during this so unless there is some kind of mental boner going on i don't think it's an orgasm.
the feeling could be described as around the forehead area. but i wouldn't say that it's definitely just a forehead feeling. there is a great deal of subjectivity describing something like this which is why i'm trying to find some scientific rationale.
possibly a little bit. it seems to cause involuntary eye movements (not unlike what would happen during REM sleep i suppose) so it's hard to tell whether these are just movements like the muscle twitching or some kind of forehead thing. Why do you ask?

if i'm subconsciously doing it, what is my answer? I'm looking for an explanation of what is going on here. figuring out whether or not i'm looking at my forehead doesn't in of itself give any answer to my question, as far as i can see.
It puts pressure on your eyes and it's misconstrued as forehead feelings, especially if you're unaware of doing it.
i see. you seem to be saying that the phenomenon is just a result of pressure on the eyes. however it is much more than that and feels very psychedelic. i suspect the feelings are due to increased activity in some part of the brain, but that is all that i can logically conclude from my observations.
Throw logic out the window. Just go with what you feel. While meditating don't try and make sense of what is happening. The main principle of Zazen is to 'open the hand of thought', This means just letting whatever you see hear think or feel just happen without your own thoughts interfering. @cktony, how is the 3rd eye a 'myth'? From personal experiences I'd say that is the farthest thing from the truth, in my opinion.
You're saying that you need to let go of these thoughts during meditation. The thing is, I do that during meditation. Doesn't mean I can't come and ask about it online later. Everything should be examined logically - if I just accepted that this was some sort of third eye thing, what kind of rational opinion is that? I'm not really trying to have spiritual epiphanies because I know plenty about that just from rational analysis of stuff.

I've never reasearched the 3rd eye being a myth, and I've heard that mentioned a couple of times, but my intuition tells me it is not a myth. I have felt mine grow, and with it my intuition and from what I know there IS a pineal gland in the human brain. Nevertheless, even if there is no physical 3rd eye, there is most definitely a 3rd eye charka.

But it's nothing like its purported to be today. There is no link to the pineal gland. Descartes originally thought the gland was unique because the gland supposedly wasn't needed by both sides of the brain. Nils Homgren came up with the idea of the 3rd eye after looking at the pineal glands of frogs and dogfish sharks. MelT goes more in depth.
i meditate a lot. no written rules. i just kinda lay down, get comfortable, close my eyes, and think for a while. when all the thoughts are out of my head and the problems are solved, i separate. i let my ego disappear for the moment... and i always see this blue light morphing, i feel like it's my "inner human"
thread's old as dirt but here's my $0.02, meditation is spiritual tool used by many to find enlightenment, calm the soul, or escape/expand the mind. trying to attach scientific explanation (proven with facts based in known reality) to something that is by no means scientific, can be counter productive. meditation is a deeply personal journey that people experience and under-take in many different ways. this doesn't mean you can't discuss or even debate your experience or methods, but it does mean there is not necessarily a right (scientifically accurate) answer out there. meditate on it ^_^ thanks for reading!
