Can anybody help a complete novice save some £££

  1. Hi, I have found myself paying sickening amounts of money for a bit of smoke so I'm going to attempt a small grow of 1 or 2 plants.

Problem is I am not very knowledgeable on the subject and I have never grown so much as a potato... and I'm from Ireland!! So basically can anyone help me pin point exactly what I need and what kind of feed I need and what schedule I should feed. I have seen small hydroponic grow tents on Amazon for £50 and grow lights from £30-70, is this the sort of thing I need?

The space I have to grow is approx. 4x4x8ft and it is in an outdoor shed. Another concern I have is it is coming into the colder seasons soon, will the hydroponic tent make the seasons and temperature irrelevant?
I know I am very ignorant on the subject but any help to point me in the right direction would be very helpful.
    Many Thanks!

  2. There is a TON of info that you "need" on these boards....

With lights....you're gonna wanna go with something that has decent enough specs to grow, and to get plants to harvest....I personally believe Quantum Boards or QB's are the way to go. I dont personally own one...but I have seen people grow with them with awesome results.

I still have what we call a Blurple light...."old school" LED light...LOL What light you should get will completely depend on what your expectations are and how much money you have...tbh.

So you are set on hydroponic huh? Well If the tent is going to be outside....the temps are gonna be close to that temp....so you DO have to worry about, or plan for temps and humidity.

There are different "name brands" of nutrients and nutrient "all in ones" out there...you'll just have to pick one you wanna use and go from there.

  3. First how much power do you have in this shed? 2nd how cold does it get? 3rd does smell matter are your neighbors close and can you get in trouble? If it's cold then go with an HID light to add heat and vent with outside air and a HEPA filter. If it's cold you will need a small heater for lights off so the plants don't shock. Think about these things first and then if you want to proceed I can help you get started.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I am not set on any particular method, in fact I barely know my options. I have spent the last couple of hours reading some of the forums on here and there is just so much info I don't know where to start haha.

Have you a recommendation on what way you would grow in my situation? I have very low expectations, if I got an oz from a plant I would be so happy! My budget is pretty tight, for a 1 plant grow I would hope to spend £200 or less, I know it seems very tight but I don't have much faith that I will be good at this haha

    thanks

  5. That is a separate issue altogether, the shed is currently a storage shed filled with crap, and has no power at all, so I will empty it and find a way to get power in there. The neighbours aren't a problem, both are weed smokers themselves. In the winter the temperature sits around 3-8 degrees Celsius. I will definitely take you up on that offer if you don't mind. I wont be starting this project for another month or 2, just gathering info for now but its quite intimidating haha thanks buddy!

  6. No problem I am a commercial cannabis grower in Washington State and I have a passion for what I do and I enjoy helping people when I can. I have been growing indoors for 30 years. You can follow my grow journal I just started. (It's my home grow I signed a non disclosure for work) Look in the indoor grow section for Whispers Grow Journal. I don't know everything (don't trust anyone who says they do) and I love learning still but I can definitely get you going. What I don't know we will learn together. That is the spiel I I tell new gardeners when I train them at the grow. I am not the head grower but I have run large commercial grows. I managed 5 identical rooms like the photo below.

  7. Thanks very much, appreciate the help I will check out your Journal now and do some research. That is a beautiful sight my friend! I'm so jealous haha Clearly you are very good at what you do, I'm glad I found this forum!

  9. Ok please help me save $$$ lol

  10. In or close to Chelan County???

  11. You're going to move to the USA first

  12. Arlington. Are you in WA?

  13. No, but my son is in Seattle......I just happened to watch a documentary on commercial growing in Chelan County Washington.....and the problems they have or had........did they ever make Cannabis agricultural for NON TAX purposes?? I know that was one of many things they were facing....

  14. Not sure the question but if I am guessing no they wanted the tax revenue and since it is Federally illegal there are very few write offs. Taxed at 40% on the retail side but you know they pass that along to the producer processor. Taxation without representation. Sound familiar? :)

  15. Any grow light that costs that amount isn't worth using. The cheapest light that is worth using in my opinion is this one.. Mars TS 1000 Quantum Board Led Grow Light - Mars Hydro for sale, buy Mars TS 1000 Quantum Board Led Grow Light - Mars Hydro - Mars Hydro
It'll cover an area of between 60x60cm - 80x80cm. Those are two common tent sizes.

To cover a 4x4' you will need to spend 100s.
Any nutrients will do, even tomato feed can get you a harvest if you really want to save some money. But Growth Technology's ionic grow & bloom can be bought for £10 a litre so it isn't much

Forget about growing in a shed, you'll have enough problems to deal with just learning how to grow this fickle plant, you don't need to throw in even more obstacles. Your temperature will be extremely difficult to control.

Hydroponic means to grow plants without soil. So tents can't be hydroponic.

There are 3 things you shouldn't cheap out on, lights, exhaust fan, and carbon filter. These 3 need to be good quality otherwise you will get problems at some point. Pretty much everything else can be got on the cheap

Systemair fans and Rhino Pro filters are my recommendations. They may seem expensive but they will last a very long time

  16. Hey,

Got an outdoor brick shed here in the most vague of Midlands-ish locations, I thought about growing in there but came to the conclusion it'd be a pain in the arse so converted an old airing cupboard inside instead. It's small, 55cm by 85cm by 180cm, but I still bang over 6oz in jars from a single plant in there, plus have a couple of ounces of popcorny stuff for cooking / messing around with in experiments. Not bad results for 210 watts of COB and LED which cost me £99.

In hindsight, I'd have not been so cheap and would have bought a Quantum Board. Love my light, but it's not as sexy as a QB.

Even with the light on 24/7 for my autos, a fan for circulation, and a fan / carbon filter kit, it costs me less than 90p a day to run. A gram costs me less than 50p and that makes me seriously resent paying a dealer when I've run out after smoking too many "grower's joints".

    Many issues with sheds...

    1) Power: means either a cable running from house to shed which looks dodgy, or calling in an electrician to sort it out, I don't even like the thought of a sparkie knowing I have power out there, kinda got this thing where the less people know about my shit the better.

    2) Temperatures: shitty UK weather, it would cost me more in insulation that it'd be worth, and that's with a load of Rockwool in the roof already. It gets hot as hell in summer in there, as for winter, well I don't even brave it down there. You're either going to have to insulate the hell out of it to get a stable environment, then still spend a load on a small air-con unit, dehumidifier and all that malarkey. In winter the indoor warmth, and outdoor cold, could potentially be an issue of moisture, and the risk of stuff going mouldy.

    3) Bug control: nah, too many ways the little bastards can get in, not worth the risk. Hell even indoors we get spiders and mini flying assholes, my daughter will scream "SPIDER" at least twice a week meaning I have to go spider-busing in her room, or the bathroom.... If you're in a tent, in a shed, and you have carbon filters on your air flow into the tent the little buggers shouldn't be able to get in, but it still runs more of a risk when opening up the tent to look inside, things can and will get in.

    4) Being 'noid': risk of heat signature in a random flyover.

Just because your neighbours smoke don't mean shit I'm afraid, my neighbours here are smokers, he's growing and the only reason I know is he was stupid enough to show me pics on his phone one day when I had to confront him over some different stuff, ironically his very poor efforts in the garden.... He and his mates blaze some really loud flowers outside, they cough all hours of the day and night, he's dealing grams for a tenner and my noia thinks he's a risk to my grow's security; already seen far too many pig-mobiles on the street, thanks to this dipshit and his crack whore mate who have bought attention to the area.

I don't sell, never have, nor would I ever. I only grow to be self sufficient in my own smoke, and make capsules for the girlfriend's bad back: sure beats Tramadol.

I'd suggest either convert an existing indoor space, lining it with standard black / white sheeting, or be prepared to get a tent setup in the corner somewhere.

Agree with @GoldGrower about the fans and filters:

SystemAir RVK fans = long life, German made, good shit.
Rhino PRO filter = well worth the extra few quid over the hobbyist ones.

Had both before, well worth the extra cash.

I do however disagree with another point; they're not fickle, they're a piece of piss to grow. As for hoping for a lone ounce, set your hopes and expectations a bit higher - go with a fucking huge pot, fabric helps avoid roots getting bound, coco, perlite, PH 5.8-ish, don't overfeed, be gentle with the nutes and you'll soon learn to read your babies.

Honestly, my heart sinks here when I see some people's yields, I wonder how they're getting it so wrong to be pulling only a few grams from a plant, I mean what's the point? I know I can pull higher yields, still learning and always hope to be too!

Would personally spend my £££ with Invisible Sun Led for the light, UK based, no import duty BS, pulls from the wall the watts you'd expect, doesn't advertise itself as a 450 / 600 / 1000 or anything which I feel is deceptive, and possibly named to exploit a lack of understanding.

Good luck with it all anyway, enjoy.

  17. I'm sure u dont have the soils like we do here or the nutes. U can read the beginning of my thread! My peeps have years of knowledge
