Calmag vs hard water?

  1. Ok so im still a begginer in this stuff, this is my fourth grow. So i'll explain, i use RO water because tap water where i live is really hard, like 1300 ppm hard, but last grow i had a problem with yellowing leaves wich started late in flower, i cant attribute this problem to calmag defficency but i gave some empson salts to the plants (also, in every grow ive done, i consistently get purple stems!). I would not like to spend more money to buy a calmag additive, so my question is this: if i mix my nutrients to 600 for example, could i add a little tap water till it goes up another 100 or 200 ppm and maybe that would help with my possible calmag defficiencies? Thanks in advance!

  2. Makes a lot of sense :smoking-banana:

  3. Yep. If you sure your tap has enough cal mag in it. Mine does not for coco and LEDS but does for soil. Weird.

  4. I keep my veg nutes premixed in 1 storage and flower nutes in another. I do all kinds of mixing and matching, adding and subtracting of nutes, water and ph up and down to achieve my goal.

  5. What medium do you grow in?

I know personally for me ro wasn't worth it in soil. Too clean in a sense. We have extremely hard water too but i had less issues with it then i did with ro.

  6. Yes. Calcium is everything. You can add tap to bring nutes up to target ph, and that may be enough to compenstae for lack of Cal in the r/o. But pot needs calcium from somewhere. You could consider a nute that already has calcium in it, but even still, they often recommend adding calmag to compensate for the r/o. I had problems with too much lime in the tap coating the roots making calcium uptake difficult, and then calcium shortage from using distilled. So it's a balance. And adding epsom when the calcium issue is not resolved makes matters worse. But if you are adding epsom, also adding calcium nitrate combined makes the proper cal:mag ratio plants need.
