Calculating potency with oil

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by loganhopeless, Dec 16, 2018.

  1. Evening y'all. Couldn't find anything on this, but when calculating potency, do you use the initial amount of oil, or amount after decarbing? I lose about 25% of the moisture, so 1 cup really turns to 3/4th cup. I assume calculate the after amount of oil, since oil that isn't there can't bind to THC. Thoughts?

  2. There shouldn't be much difference.
Decarbing loses about 12% of the weight for dry herb.
Apparently your herb isn't fully dried.
Fresh harvested will be about 5 times as heavy as dried herb.
The presence of too much water might mess up decarb, and fool Tyou into thinking you're using more herb than you really are.

If you divide the final after-decarb mass by 0.877 (or multiply by 1.14), then you'll know exactly how much completely dry herb you used.

Also, there is no "binding" going on with oil.
Pure FECO (Full Extract Cannabis Oil) will get a user very medicated, without the herb ever having touched oil.

  3. I don’t mean the mass of the flower.. I add exactly 1 cup of oil to my flower when decarbing, then when filtered through, I have 3/4th cup of infused oil. So some of the moisture is leaving the oil, which is fine, but when I calculate the potency, do I calculate it with 1 cup? Or 3/4th cup?

  4. You calculate potency for the whole batch according to the amount of cannabis you use. When you strain a lot of oil gets left behind in the mash. That's why one cup oil becomes 3/4 cup oil.
