Building a medium, active carbon filter

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by mordgrow, Apr 5, 2007.

  1. OK, I’ve gotten into flowering my first set of plants and the smell is getting very noticeable.

Here’s the problem:; 4 plants, small grow room, venting in subbasement (works for attics too)

    Supplies:
6" to 8" duct reducer, stiff wire mesh of some sort, duct tape, wire cutters and 2 universal air filters (at least 16.5"x48"), and about 30 min (plus other stuff i forgot to list)

Size everything up and cut away!

get it to look like this with some tape, and wrapping extra wire from your cuts to hold the frame together
    [IMG]

If you want to use some material for pre filters cut it now, but not more than 10 inches or so, we want a good overlap
    [IMG]

Wrap it up, this brand comes with Velcro which made it super easy
    [IMG]

tape the ends of the filters to the metal (other options avalible too, bungies or claps or what ever)

now you have a nice 28" long, 8" round active carbon exhaust filter!

Pre filters? too easy, use the extra material to pre filter in the grow room, here’s how i did mine :

Fold cut, cut again where the bulb holder is
    [IMG]

    Attach (I used bungie cords)

Pre filter hang,.. I used bungies again (so useful) it doesn’t really make it any quieter, I may do something about that later.

Here's a shot of it installed on the fan

Should be enough filter for what im working with & last the duration of my flowering

Later I'll try to bake the filters in the oven at 350 or so for an hour to "re activate" the filters and see if i can use them again or just get new filters for my next grow

  2. Where is the carbon to fill it with?

  3. the black material is a carbon filter. just run the air through that and it scrubbs out the bad smells!

  4. You'll be surprised how quickly the carbon will be used up. Usually people will fill the entire INSIDE of the cylinder it forms and use a non-carbon mesh to contain it all on the outside.

  5. crist.. i thought this was supose to do the trick.. i have another filter i can fit inside for it to run through i supose

  6. how exactly does this work, do u attach it to an exhaust fan or?? srry if i sound stupid im new at these things.

  7. So I did it the right way, Here's some pictures of how i made this filter work.

    Supplies:

I'm going to take the filter i made above, shrink it abit, fill it with active carbon and put it inline with my dryer vent to vent out side.

This will ensure the air from the grow room doesnt get into my dryer

I striped the cage filter i made and cut it in half to make a "box" filter

Wraped some sheet metal around it so it could be an "in line" filter

I cut the filters and lined the cage with them, then filled it with my carbon and put another piece of filter material on top crammed in to hold the carbon in place

Here's my dryer vent exiting the house, Its 4" so i had to get a converter
    [IMG]

    Here's my contraption installed
    [IMG]

I also stuck my ozne generator INSIDE the pipe, so it runs through this carbon filter, hits my ozone generator, then goes into my dryer ducting and exits the house

Honestly I can still smell a bit of "weedy" smell coming out, but its very muted and i cant smell it unless i walk right up to the dryer exhaust.

my house smells perfect now, no more walking in and getting slapped in the face with plant smell:D

Venting out side is a must IMO, figure out a way to do it and enjoy!

  8. part way thru the 3rd grow with a filter made the same & is still no smell.
last ones i used had to be changed every few weeks.
depends a lot on the quality of the matting u use, but u want the maximum possible area exposed to the foul airflow for best filtration ;)

could still smell it with a 6"rvk on full blast, but with a gentler 4" fan there is no smell at all.
if u can smell weed still, try turning ur fan down a bit :D

  9. my fan also cools my "cool tubes" so i need a bit of air velocity to keep the lights / room cool... I supose i could try to turn my fan down and let my air flow slower through the filter.. but honestly i'm pretty happy with how it is now, you can only smell a hint of "weed" if you stick your nose right near the exhaust out side.. thats good enough for me!

though it does blow into my dryer a little.. hehe guess my flap design needs a reveamp..

  10. i did the exact same thing when i first made my carbon filter, and went out and bought some of that aquarium shit :-D works great. let me know how long yours lasts with all those monster plants inside! good luck!

  11. wow that looks like a great grow. i can only hope it comes out like that for me.

  12. so is this thread now "how not to make a carbon filter" because apparently, it just wasn't good enough...

  13. Very harsh words my man. That is no joking matter.

  14. DUDE!! minus rep for you

  15. damn, talk about just not getting it. how u gonna say something like that man??

    fuckin idiot.

just flicked u into the red for that one :wave:

    my FIRST EVER negative rep

  16. Lol @ all the neg reps.. Im not going flame uncle even though it might be well deserved .

Thanks for the Thread this has been very useful in my quest to further educate myself .

most members are a great asset here

  17. I saw this earlier and didn't quite understand, now I do and holy shit, how can you say a thing like that?

  18. lol your a better man than me :)

  19. ok, well I see that you all hate me for that, but i'd like everyone to know that it was just a joke. I diddn't think that everyone would be so offended by it. really i didn't.
I know that this wasn't the filter that he was using, because like yoursel, i've read every one of his grows, and his DIY's and have nothing but respect for this grower, and actually use some of his ideas on my grows. I simply got carried away when I saw the thing that said *busted* by not having a good enough carbon filter under his own DIY carbon filter. I hindsight it was harsh and i would not do it again, but if you cant see some humor in the irony, then you should check your pulse.

again, I apoligise, and i know that everyone still hates me though.

I was in no way trying to soil mordgrow's good name. I respect him for his growing ability, growroom design, and his ingenuity and skill in making not only very excellient inventions, but also in sharing it with the rest of us.

I cannot say how sorry I am and I hope my fellow stoners and growers will forgive me for fucking up like we all do from time to time.

  20. Just to let you know, I will forgive you. But still have a pulse and found no humor at all. If it were a year or so down the road, I then just may have found a wee bit of humor, but the timing was horrible. Again, I will look past this. Stone on.
