Bubbler causing reservoir to go acidic?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by Allan421, Jul 25, 2022.

  1. I'm pretty sure I know the answer but may be missing some fine points.

So, I've noticed my reservoir, when just filled and set to the right pH, moves from about 6.3 to 3.5 after a few days of an airstone pushing my high Co2 sealed room air through it. I assume it's just the science of gas exchange and Co2 getting converted to carbonic acid in the water.

I find myself adjusting the pH back up before watering. I use Food Grade Potassium Carbonate as pH up for this. I wonder if the Pot. Carb. is also adding potassium to my nute solution?

I use Krud Cutter Concrete Etcher, Phosphoric Acid, as pH down. I've been using it for years with no ill affects I can see. I wonder if it's adding phosphorus to the nutes?

I assume they do contribute as the PPM and EC both rise when those are used. I wonder if the PPM rises by 30 PPM or drops by 30 PPM if that 30 PPM is only potassium or phosphorus being added?

Any chemists in the house? Thanks in advance. Peace and Good Health fellow scientists.

  2. Curiosity, I'll be watching I'd like to know the answer to this too. I've not heard of this issue before.
Are you using a drip system?
Or a flood table? Or maybe you're using a deep water culture recirculator system? Just out of curiosity not that any of these different systems should make a difference in the problem you're experiencing.:passing-joint:

  3. Hiya Growtogrow, I'm a simple dirt farmer for a few decades. I bugged out of hydro years ago after a pump failed while I was camping and I lost hundreds of clones. Soil is more forgiving. Reservoir to me is the bins I store and prepare my H20 in.

  4. Okay Allan good to meet you.
So you are using synthetics for your primary feed for your cannabis correct?

  5. Yes sir. I've read some studies on organic vs. synthetic and apparently there is no difference in the end product. It's more simple for me this way. I reuse soil and flushing it out well between uses and fespiking it with synthetics and epsoms and perlite seems to work well. You?

  6. Well Al.. you don't mind if I call you Al do you? Most people call me GTG

I would differ with you on that point 100%.

Synthetics work well to grow weed with good thc or cbd and good yields... That's it. But lack in the other important departments.

I work for a commercial farmer where he's license to grow 144 plants here in Michigan. 20220426_105615.jpg 20220426_105653_(1).jpg
Is weeds very good, his clients love his weed. He gets top dollar.

I have a small 8x9 growroom where I use 315 CMH lights in many different spectrums as I play with light a lot.
I run farmers same clones in my 100% organic DIY soil inside without CO2.
    Inside spring 2022 mg-25
    20220414_142020_HDR.jpg 20220414_142201_HDR.jpg
These pics are special recipe that I was working on. Using light recipes and wine Vineyard techniques. That's why the leaves look like they do. It's a high stress training techniques.

He will tell you for a fact with the exact same clone. it was modified grapes 25 grown in my 100% organic soil no synthetic anything,
I Patted myself on the back for this one. Lol. But He will tell you that my weed tastes better, smells better, and looks better than his modified grapes 25. In fact he said it was hashy LOL.. He isn't the kind of guy that gives out credit unless credits is due... so I had to say I'm feel pretty Vindicated about all that.

Organics flavor, aroma, and color is superior to the synthetics...

I've been working for him for about 3 years now. He didn't believe me. Until about 6 months ago then he started seeing the light my Organics.
Just the other day when I was out there to the farm working the outside crop. 20220722_101139_HDR.jpg 20220722_101130_HDR.jpg I was smoking some of my weed in a pipe and he wanted to hit it. So I put a couple of pinches of my bud in the bowl. Him and the other guy hit my pipe. Then ask me what we were smoking? I said you don't know? They said no... I explained that it was his mg25. They both were floored. Lol

The only thing I can say about synthetics is that you get a better yield with synthetics because you can juice the plant.

I'm a connoisseur of weed. I only grow AAA flower. I don't grow any weed for concentrates. I trim and manipulate for the finest bud.

My outside summer 2022 100% organic. Nothing but warm poop fish poop alpaca poop. It is the best soil on God's green earth these girls are growing in.

20220726_181750.jpg 20220726_181518.jpg 20220726_181503.jpg if I thought synthetics was better I wouldn't be talking to you at all right now and I would be agreeing with you 100%. But I know better...

I've been growing for about s*** too damn long probably about 25 years. A gorilla grower in the '80s and then when it became legal here in Michigan... I've had so much fun.
I love to get people high... When they come visit me they leave stoned. I think it's my mission in life. LOL...

You can definitely call me Al, CTG.

This is a very interesting turn of conversation. I've not grown organically but maybe kind of hybrid at best. I cannot speak from experience to the quality difference but believe your results are splendid.

One could argue a plant sees useable nitrogen and uses it no matter the source. An ion is an ion and the plant doesn't know or care where the particular ion comes from. If all of its nutritional needs are met in a substrate that's not detrimental to it then other factors may be at play.

I don't hold that view as gospel. The organic source of the ions may very well make a difference to the plant. I'm not certain though.

It would be interesting to do a side by side grow, all things being equal except for the media and how it delivers nutrition.

I've been at this hobby a long time also, 30+, and ran a 90,000 watt hps soil grow in CO. When nutes and all other parameters were dialed in the results were quite nice. I had a few organic fellows question why our results were better than theirs.

Maybe they had a not perfect mix? Lighting a bit different? Harvest time different? I don't know.

There seems to be a lot of opinions on this one but I will say natural healthy organic soil surely can't be a bad thing, maybe except for nasty bacteria in poops, and may definitely grow a superior specimen.

I'm gonna have to go with "jury is still out" on this one as there are so many other factors at play. I do now our crops always tested clean at the lab.

    Peace CTH!

    Lovely pics by the way

  11. Thanks Al I appreciate that on the pics.

Yeah give it a go do some side by sides that's how I do a lot of my testing. As I said in the previous post I play with light recipes. I study under Dr Bruce bugby from Utah State University. He hasn't been posting a lot recently due to covid and everything but he is one of the few universities that were licensed to study cannabis in the United States.
He's also been contracted by NASA for something like 40 years for all of their hydroponic growing, lights,. He's a super plant scientist is the best way I can put it I'm sure there's a better term than that.
But he's been conducting tests on a super large scale. Not only at the University in Utah but around the country and with other colleagues across the world. They're conducted a lot of tests ranging in the thousands.
So I use some of his conclusions use them in the way I think works best.
If you don't mind I'll bring you down to my thread and you can see some of my work? I have posted some on this site but most of my work is posted on another site in much more detail.

  12. I use my phone Al. I've not ever used these sites with my computer. Probably cuz I don't have a computer. LOL but below where it says poster reply it says upload a file. I just push on that and go to my photos and pick an album out and then go down and pick out the photo I want out of that album. That's how I do it I don't know what you're working from so yeah you'll probably have to figure it out for yourself.

  13. Very nice Al, I hit the link it went to like 72, 000 pictures. That's a lot of photos man I looked at quite a few of them. So do you work for or work at or work for or own the dispensary?
Good amount Crystal on some of those buds... do y'all Harvest a lot of concentrates?

Concentrates are pretty big around here too. There's a lot of people who Vape so on,..
But people I know and the commercial farmer I work for everybody we deal with are pretty much all are into flower and smoking rather than vaping so much... The Clients we deal with really look for dank hard... play quarter bounce with your buds on a table type hardness... LoL... they're looking for a Rockwell number...
The farmer I work for he's got more of a vape clientele and he does make quite a bit of concentrates.
    I don't, I only grow AAA flower.
I prune my girls like a rose farmer would prune his Rose bushes. To Just get the best flower possible and the dankest bud...

I grow a lot outside. My inside growing is primarily from fall through late spring. I don't do a lot of indoor growing in the summer months it doesn't make any sense to me. Not only that but it cost a lot and then you got to watch out for the powdery mildew in this area it's extreme. Just tracking it in and out of the grow room is such a highly probability. It's just not worth it. I've had to paint my entire basement with mold killing paint everywhere cuz I got it so bad about 5 years ago that it was in my floorboards.

Top pick is my yard girls 2022.
I have a cage out back you can see it at the end of the picture there's 4 girl's Inside the Cage. I'm licensed for 24 here on this property.
I stay stealth because I live in not such a great area. So I try to keep all of my plants manipulated down below the fence line so it's not to be seen and it's also a law that they can't be seen from the road here in Michigan.

    20220726_181750.jpg

Years past from here out. This pic directly underneath here is two plants of the Fire OG Kush big head seeds. These were each almost 3 pounds each finish Harvest.

Another two plants of Fire OG Kush. It's a favorite around here. I've been growing it for years. The spot where they're growing at I just put a deck in here this year. And that's why you see the girl's growing alongside my fence line now. I'm not sure if I like it or not but it is what it is now

Well I can only put in 16 pictures at a time. I guess you know something I don't know..? I can't load it up like you loaded it with the butt load of pictures lol... you wouldn't want to see all my pictures anyways. Got a lot of trucks and food also.

I did see you was cooking some sausage and some steaks in couple of your pics. LOL

I'm taking clones today. From all of my outside girls and some of my inside plants as well. As we're getting down now to the wire where we're seeing Trigger Time Light at around 14 and 1/2 hours a day I think tomorrow or the next day. So it's Trigger Time here in Michigan be seeing flower sign in about 2 weeks. The girls are already stacking. They know what time it is.

  14. I'll throw up another 16 pictures of past grows outdoor and indoor. I have a lot of pictures in my storage site that would take me a minute to figure out how to bring them here to post them for you.

First pick is from 2014 when I used to use HPS and the first digital balances that had came out back then I think they were i-power.

This year's the first year I haven't done light deprivation in the last 6 year's. my cage is set up that I can pull a tarp over top of it and be married to it for about 8 weeks. I can run 2 crops solid outside but if I really wanted to push it I could run 3. But that's just being married to it all summer long without automation.

2016 seedsman somango my old lady with the bud and a wheelbarrow with just the one plant in it it was a big Harvest. Buds were so dank. I almost lost some of this plant to bud rot but I caught it just in time. And was able to have a full Harvest very lucky that year.

I tried doing a raised bed in the basement one year. A lot of damn work but it was pretty nice doing the living soil it was 12 in deep 10 ft long and 3 ft wide. A lot of bags of soil went into that wow.
    Screenshot_20210303-084347_(1).png

As I said I dabble with light and build my own . I like using CMH lights cuz there's such a wide spectrum of light bulbs to choose from I can make recipes up all day long 20200519_065249.jpg 20210122_164914.jpg Screenshot_20210123-080936_(1).png Screenshot_20210303-084157_(1).png 20210209_101234_(1).jpg

Well I got a lot more to show you but it's too much of a hassle to try and pull it all up. I got to get back to my farm though.

Give that side by side and go. You won't be disappointed. Kind of think of it like buying vegetables at the supermarket and you can compare the flavor between commercially grown non-organic vegetables and the difference between organically grown and even permaculture Organics. The difference in the flavor is big. It's the same with the cannabis. Give it a go hell you ain't got nothing to lose.

  15. Hiya Brother,
Sorry for the late reply. I LOVE that you are so deeply into the subject.

I've only about 20 pics I think. Have I somehow opened my whole library? We shall see.

    Another scientist always helps.

Dispensary, "Your Wellness Center" was open before I got to 'The Springs" in 2010. What a difference a few years either way. When we got there it was a free-for-all. No clear rules, no tracking, know way to follow the money.

I had my own gig going at the ranch growing for 50 patients. When we dropped by "Angel's Wings" they liked the product and wanted 2lbs/Wonder Woman weekly.

Back doors, no papers, no law to say otherwise.

    We did our best then.

Then I saw the add for a master grower, soil, to run the 90,000 watt, two flower rooms 150 lamps, all 600 Hps, and connected to good climate control. I toured the op, found errors from the previous "GM" I took over all responsibility for everything but paying the bills. I did well. I worked my ass off.

I was to be paid at 'shelf ready' 20% of retail value. It was a big pile and life was good.

Three days before fist amber I stopped by the store at my regular time
and found locked doors, signs and cameras gone, an apology note to customers about lack of resources to continue.

I immediately called Uri (true name). Uri is big, aggressive, bragged of his MMA career. Tats everywhere And an long arm rapping russian saying.

Uri told deployable assets we 0, forclose eminent.

I told him we could start cutting that night and likely pull through.

He said decision was made, garden has been removed, locks changed, surveillance closed.

So I raised a 13 strain crop, 10 my own strains, to harvest ready and the Russian owners cut me out last minute.

150 plants in 30 gal containers, raised well, ready to go, were stolen. I told Uri that it was bullshit and I am not stupid. I said I know people
    ..

He responded "Don't you ever, ever threaten me...

Turns out Russian Mob did the same thing with a dozen othe guys.
I've let things get a bit of of control. 17 strains.

I 've only put 20 pics max in my spot Here. Not sure why otners are showing up.

I like that the science get your fired up. It just becomes work when the thrill is gone. I miss 300 zips bigtime though.

That dispensary is a long fascinating story. I answered a wanted looking for a master grower with soil experience. I met two Russian gentlemen downtown Colorado Springs the night of the Stevie Nicks concert at Red Rocks. We chatted for a while, they grilled me on the Dynamics of soil, they asked me about photoprl
. And nutrient deficiencies and how would I check in no..

  16. Just trying to answer your question on CO dispensary.

    Me: Master Grower
Size: 150-600s,90,000 watts, two flower rooms.

Russian Mob members scammed me. Let me raise it to clip day then cut me out and threatened me if I caused a problem for them.

Wife wanted to go 'get righteous' but finally understood these fellows will wood chipper us. At lot of $ at stake.

What are your thoughts, lighting curious as you are, on adding 380-410nm UVA to plants ready to go, for a few extra days for increased oil production?

Have a great weekend good sir.
