I am curious if anyone knows of any breeders that focus on breeding for different types of highs. It seems that most breeders focus on strength, bad appeal, color and smell. If you could breed for different high factors, what would you try to achieve? Here are the different things I would shoot for. Admitedly there are limits to what can be done but you never know what can be done until you have tried. - A MDMA style euphoria, basically transforming the trippy high of a good sativa with the loved up high of MDMA IF we can synthesize it maybe we can cultivate it in a plant. - A strain that makes me more motivated the next day, not less. - I hate fighting to keep motivated when I smoke, it is a huge downside IMO - A strain that increases sociability and can counter act anxiety - The closest I have found to this was kannabia smile, every time my girl and I smoked it we ended up in long conversations. If we were watching a movie or TV show we would end up turning it off and talking for hours. I don't have a place to do it but if I did I would be crossing different sativas and focusing on quality over quantity. I think there is a huge amount of potential in this area as it is mostly an untapped field. I also think this may be where we still have a lot discover about marijuana. Is there anyone already doing this? I have not been able to find to many sativa only crosses. If we aren't careful, one day we may not have pure sativa strains needed to do such work, everything will be some hybrid.
I want to add to this request; all of the above plus, plants that grow to the size of fruit trees and will harvest every year.. Just like a tree.. But just like a cannabis.. Ya know? That'd be ideal.. Plus everything op said.
I regularly breed for different highs, and with the same strain too, the strain I have has been with me for years, so is a no name bag type seed that I've been working on. An example might be ..if I go to a party tonight and it will be full on, then I'd smoke a "J" from a bush that I harvested mature but still young, this would give me the hi and higher high, typical of concentrated THC, when I get back and in the mood, I may try a "J" from a plant that I harvested quite late ..that will give me total uncontrollable "COUCH LOCK" ..high in CBD, with THC just turning bad or on the decline. I thought thats what everyone did....LOL peace "V"
There's always potential for different highs, but there's also limits too. There's definitely a ton of variation within current strains already. I suppose if you're not in a medical marijuana state or you aren't a grower you don't have those options. But the first post you made is kind of already here. I'm not sure if you'll ever get an MDMA style high. Considering THC will always just be THC, I don't think you'll get the high that's based off a different chemical. To keep motivated a good strong sativa does the trick for me. I'm sure there may be one that would do the same for you, it just takes a while to find what you need. Breeding takes a lot of room and patience. I can't say I have either of those aspects.
I am sure there are limits but considering that I seem to be the the first person with this concept I would venture to say that the limits are quite a long ways off. The way I see it, I am asking if any breeders have taken a more scientific approach to the breeding medicinal qualities of marijuana. If not, I think it should be considered going forward. It would require the community working together though. The first step would require the creation of a basic nomenclature of the experience that we all could use. I wonder if something like this exists for testing drugs in the pharmaceutical world already? If not, it would not be to hard to do. From there you would want multiple people trained on the rating scale to rate each strain. I would start with the landraces as they are the "pure" ingredients that have been used to make all hybrids. From there you would go on to rate every strain you could and see if there is a correlation with it's genealogy and it's effects. The rest would be selective breeding to bring out the traits the breeder wants, the same as we currently do just with a focus on the effect of the plant. Not the traits of its looks, smell and growth rates. Personally I prefer a strong sativa as well.
There are many breeders that focus on high, not growth characteristics or bag appeal. Some that come to mind are DJ short, Shantibaba, Nevil, Dubi, Kaiki/Charley from DJ SHort, Mr Nice/CBD Crew, Nevils Beans, Ace, and Cannabiogen respectively. Those are but a few names. Some breeders like TGA and BOG breed for taste/bag appeal in addition to strength, but the a fore mentioned breeders/companies focus primarily on preserving types of effects in cannabis. Growth characteristics are always a consideration though, I am stating that they aren't always #1 on all breeders program goals. Already exists in nature. Look for pictures of true tropical plants like Thai or hybrids of thai grown in tropical climates, 20ft monsters. Seriously. This is skill + genetics + environment. Plenty of people grow trees, you just need the correct conditions and technique. This next one my responses are in red: Check out Ace and Cannabiogen, they have already done a lot of the leg work you are talking about at the end here. You can have landrace genetics selected one or two generations away from their origin, taking out the most painful part of working with wild weed. Already selected for effect and easier to grow characteristics without compromising the natural characteristics of the strains. I am sure there are more than these two companies out there, in fact I know a couple others. They are available to find for those that seek them out. That's my 2c on the topic. Be well.
Yeah, pretty much as stated all of the original breeders did most of the work. The reason blue dream is so sought after, imo, is that it has a lot of real deal haze in it. There are other factors, but that haze is in there and it happens to be very popular and rightfully so, the high is crazy and can change a lot depending how much haze you can bring out in it. So that watered down haze is still making for some unique highs after its been crossed several times. Then the nose and bag apeal take over as priorites. Another good example is the girls scout cookies, what do you know, its two played out strains, but hapens to have durban poison mixed in as a third and its taken off as something unique, and again imo, its because of what the durban brings. maybe a little off track, lol, but yeah the basics are there and most of the hard work has been 'done', in that its really hard so no one wants to do it again, Haha. And as mentioned with the other compounds, there's a lot more than thcv going on in there. Currently delta9 labs in socal tests for a total of 9 compounds I believe, and steep hill labs in Oakland just announced that they will soon offer testing for 6 compounds PLUS 6 terpenes!!! Keep your eyes peeled cause the way strains are marketed and devoloped is really gonna change over the coming years with the advent of new testing and discovery and study or more compounds and such. Gonna be a fun ride!
Norcali thanks very much for the info, you have given me more then I have been able to find on my own searching. I will look into these breeders. I wish they all worked on a much more formal level so it wouldn't be so hard for people to find this information on their own. Here is a pic I just found that I think is a great example of what I am talking about on a much more physiological level.
