Breaking down your buds (old school)

Discussion in 'Experienced Cannabis Enthusiasts' started by tstick, Nov 25, 2012.

  1. Old school smoker, here. In my youth, we learned to break down a bag of buds by starting with the least of the bag (the shake, small buds, etc.) and rolling that up, first. It was a kind of reverse-priority I guess you could say. That way, as time went on, the quality of the bag would be constantly improving as you moved from the least to the best buds.

And when we got to the really nice buds, we always started at the bottom of them and trimmed off pieces. By the time we were down to the very last of our stash, it was always the very best of the bag!

I find that nearly 40 years later, I'm still breaking down buds the same way....and it still works just as well today as it did back then. It's really weird, though, because I can get the best weed any time I want without having to worry about stretching out my stash and using this old school method. Old habits die slowly, I guess.

Does anyone else still prioritize their buds and break them down systematically? Or, do you just grab whatever and grind it up?

  2. Yup thats what i do..never really though about it haha

  3. I do the same pretty much, unless I'm smoking a blunt. I will try to grab a blunt sized nug and just grind up one, always pull apart the bud from bottom to top tho, so it has that Christmas tree shape lol

  4. I can digg it.

I do the same. Small nuggs and any shake get burnt first, then I just have fatty nuggs to smoke on. The big nuggs definitely last me longer because its like killing a baby unicorn every time you break one up.

If I scoop a bag of midds I sit there and pick out the stems and seeds right away. Then I just have a bag of little budds I can grind up right quick without having to fuck with the seeds and stems.

  5. ill usually start with the tiny buds first.
ill use them as single serving nugs.

once they are all gone ill break down the bigger nugs.
    & repeat the process.

so i guess i find myself saving the nice tasty dense buds for last.

  6. I think everyone just enjoys keeping the nice, large buds.

  7. I agree. Part of enjoying marijuana and the smoking (or vaping) experience is looking at what you are about to smoke....smelling it...taking it in with ALL The senses. And it's always kind of a drag when you have to start tearing into that last, big, beautiful bud (BBB!). :(

  8. Yea for sure. I try to save the best for last in most aspects of my life though

  9. Fuck no I smoke good first, then roll the loose stuff last . . .

  10. word bro thats real

  11. Usually, the nugs I get are about the same in quality and size, but I know what you mean about taking your time. It's awesome just admiring your bud before toking.

  12. yeah I never realized but I do exactly the same thing. probably cause it's physically painful for me to break one of those token fat nugs you get in every ounce. you know, the one that's like 5g while the rest are like 2 at max haha

I got a 6.66 gram nug a few weeks ago, now that was hard to break up haha

  13. Yep I've always done the same thing as well. No idea where I heard that it was a good idea, or how I picked up the habit, but ever since I can remember I've been smoking the shake first, and then smoking the nugs, and saving the largest of the bag for last.

Another trick I use which I'm not sure has a point or not is to never break the stem off a larger nug, and even if the tiniest bit of bud is left on the tip I still leave the entire stem, no matter how long. Its becasue I'm paranoid that removing the stem blocks the little nug thats left from staying hydrated, thus drying it out quicker. anybody know if this theory is unfounded or not? either way I'm still gonna do it though haha

  14. Yes I do. It also allows me to finish the dry/cure (if needed) to my satisfaction with the nicest buds in the batch.

  15. Never really thought about it, but that's what I do and I'm in the younger generation here (19).

I generally never get any real shake in my bags though, although I will scrape up loose leaves and hairs and just toss em in the first bowl. Then I work my way from smallest to biggest/nicest nugs.

  16. Usually if I'm smoking by myself I'll pick out the nicer nugs in my stash, while in group sessions ill pitch the less nice looking (But like equally as dank) nugs. Also, Whenever I re-up I pick the very tip of my dankest nicest looking nug and throw it in the pollen (keif) catch of grinder, and it just rolls around in all the keif produced by the oz usually of pot then I throw it in the center of my last bowl to remember the bud by. Then pick up an hour or so later :p :bongin:
    peace
