What is a percolator?
A device inside the bong for extra filtration. When you hit a bong, the smoke bubbles through the downstem and is cooled/filtered there for the first time. The perc is generally in the "neck" and there could be more than one. They come in various designs but the overall function is that the smoke will bubble through water once again.
What are the "arms" of a bong?
Arms are actually parts of a "tree perc." A tree perc is a style of perc that has the smoke come up a central tube to the top of the perc. From there, it is forced back down several skinnier tubes to the water where it will be filtered. These skinnier tubes are called arms. ex: A eight arm tree perc.
What does a diffuser do?
A diffuser is a downstem with holes/slits on the end, forcing the smoke to rise in many smaller bubbles instead of fewer large ones. This makes the hit smoother.
What is an ashcatcher? Does it just catch ash?
Although there are ash catchers that do pretty much only catch ash, many of them hold water and act as a filter for the smoke before it even gets to the bong. Ashcatchers also come in many shapes, sizes, styles all with different advantages/disadvantages.
Whats the difference between a beaker bottom and a tube?
As far as function I prefer a straight tube, but it's really preference. If you meant as far as looks, which I'm kind of hoping isn't the case haha, well one is a straight tube all the way to the disc shaped base and a beaker bottom has the appearance of a scientific beaker.
What is a downstem?
I'm realizing these questions are a bit out of order now... A downstem goes into a bong. It is the tube that allows you to get smoke from the bowl through the water. One end is underwater in the bong and the other end is where the slide goes
