Bong carbon filter idea?

  1. Hey GC, I have been wanting to get one of those roor carbon filter adapters for my water piece but they are just a bit too expensive for right now. So, I had an idea- What if you just packed the downstem with the carbon flakes? (assuming that it is diffused). Yea, the pieces on the bottom would get wet but the pieces on top would stay dry and effectively filter the smoke the exact same way that the adapter would. However, I have never seen this done before. Any input on if it would work the same way?? :smoking:

  2. It seems like a pretty good idea to me. Because I don't own one, So far as I can tell from pictures of the roor carbon filters, there is nothing protecting them or seperating them from the bud and putting more even on the diffused downstem would probably be even smarter because it will force the smoke over even a larger surface area of activated carbon. The only worry I would have would be having the granules down at the bottom that are wet creating a wet seal against the diffused part of your downstem. Sounds like a good idea though!

  3. Hey man thanks for the input. Never thought of the wet granules creating a seal on the diffuser holes...

  4. Well now that i think of it why not make a screen pouch similar to a pie like this

    -screen
    carbon
    -screen

the same size as the up stem in your bong and set it on the icecatchers should help some if you get a good seal.

  5. ive read up that carbon filters arent much of a helpful filter just b.c thc is a sticky molecule that it would just as easliy stick to the carbon more than the other cannabinoids.. so in end you would be getting less thc

  6. wrong...thc wouldn't get filtered in the carbon...just the ash and stuff.
and carbon filters help a lot with keeping your glass clean...use one and you'll basically never have to clean your glass.

u in CS? talkin bout hittin up the dixie chicken

After 2 years of smoking everyday with a carbon filter attachment I can honestly say I have not noticed any loss of potency in my bong hits.

My bong still needs cleaning every week, even with the attachment. The main advantage of using an active carbon attachment is the improvement in taste, I also find it impossible to get that nasty yellow smoke with the A/c. Every bong hit is milky white.

  8. I do this on a regular basis. Drop a glass screen down in the DS, try to get one that wont fall past the joint. Add granulated carbon in the space between the male and female joints. Works just like a carbon adapter, but more low profile. DO NOT use wet activated carbon. This includes dropping the carbon all the way down the stem.

  9. ima have to check this shit out then!

yea im in cs, ive heard dixie chicken in bad ass.. i have yet to go though

  10. well i would imagine the carbon would eventually get sucked thro the holes/slits of the diffuser. but thats because my activated carbon pellets are really really small. so im not really sure. but a good method that works, get a metal screen and shove it into the gap of male to female joints.. like the part that connects the 2 joints. shove it down there are poor the carbon on top. let me know if i dont make any sense.. ill take a pic

petco actually sells the best carbon..not to mention inexpensive!

    PETCO Activated Carbon at PETCO

    Removes harmful contaminates
    Eliminates odors and unsightly discoloration
    pH Stable, phosphate-free
Easy grip bottle with convenient pouring spout

Laboratory quality activated carbon with higher absorptive capacity to remove harmful chemicals, toxins, odors, discolorations and other contaminants.

  12. Hell ya, Thanks!

  13. I was thinking of getting a carbon filter, anyone know anything about cleaning it because from what i've heard you need to wash it and let it dry for ages which sounds like a real unnecessary hassle

  14. Yep, I just go down to my local petco and pick one up. Use a coffee grinder to chop it up into chunks for more surface area/better filtration
Ummm nope, you just wash it like you would any other part of the bong, after about a week empty out the filter and refill it with fresh carbon.

  15. cleaning it means simply replacing the carbon bits. I do this often, because i'm kinda OCD and i like crystal clear glass.

Let it dry for ages? No, just a quick wipe with a towel...i usually let mine sit for 10 min or so and it's good to go! Less hassle in the long run, because you won't be cleaning your glass as much.

the pros outweigh the cons, i'd say buy one.

  16. well the way carbon filters work i'd assume they filter out tons of thc, but i have one and i honestly do not notice the difference other than my hits taste GREAT! also if your too cheap to get a real carbon filter putting a metal screen into your down stem joint thing works good then just drop the stones in. Or just get one of the cheapo weedstar ones, they like 10 bucks and works just as well i guess

  17. i just use a metal screen that i dropped into the top of my a/c poured the carbon on that, i havent had issues with getting carbon in the a/c's arms, it makes a huge improvement in tast and smoothness to me, total cost i spent was around 6 buck with carbon and screens.

  18. could i grind carbon up and fill a pillbottle a/c with it?

  19. wet activated carbon produces methane hydrate which can be harmfu if directy inhaled.
