I'm interested in the genre but I havent listened to any black metal yet. (or viking metal which is a subgenre that appeared on the 1990s am I right?) So what albums do you recommend? If it matters, I like prog rock, psychedelic rock, and some early metal (specially led zeppelin)
there are WAY too many, luckily wikipedia seems to be a metal head... and has a MEGA epic list of a ton of black metal hahahahahaa its artists tho, not albums..... List of black metal bands, 0 List of black metal bands, L hahahahahahahahaha i know...that probably didnt help huh?
lol there are too many... I'm trying to filter whats good. Thanks anyway, but If I had to listen to the whole discography of all the bands listed there... well i don't know
hahaha no no, i just popped it up so you can pick and choose some... get an idea of whats going on, then if you find someone you like, you can use them as a reference to find similar bands hahahaha If you go alphabetically, i think starting at agalloch would be a good choice hahaha Dimmu Borgir is legit, wintersun is by far the most epic shit to ever happen...its just 2 guys... but they record many tracks..its so brutal hahahahah They only have 1 album haha you could pound their discography down in an hour
check out the essentials first, Bathory, Burzum, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Gorgoroth, etc. Bathory was the first band to turn from Black Metal into making Viking Metal. you can learn all this shit in Wikipedia or Metal-Archives. check out these albums: darkthrone: a blaze in the northern sky burzum: self titled mayhem: de mysteriis dom sathanas those are like, THE entry level albums. from that you can get into anything.
haha i was waiting for someone who was more knowledged in black metal to come...i never really delved deep into black metal...but i listen to anything that isnt fucking emo/country/anything involving either mixed in anyway or anything similar haha
i dont dig tooo deep myself. i like some bands. black metal is too serious sometimes, i often have problems with the bands ideals. im a punk fan myself.
all forms of extreme metal basically come from hardcore punk. thrash metal (the first metal to really wanna play as fast and brutal as possible, i like nwobhm too, but its not the same) came from bands like slayer and metallica who loved bands like black flag and negative approach. minor threat and shit. the funny thing about punk today is, its SO blended with metal its hard to tell. you probably listen to some punk bands. there are some genres that are punk AND metal, like GRINDCORE, and CRUST PUNK. punk isnt just a couple of teenagers with snotty attitudes and spiked hair like people like to imagine.
people who dislike punk tend to think bands like green day are punk. it's a shame cause theres a lot of awesome hardcore/grind/pv/post/emo/ect from past generations. Anyways black metal recs. 'Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas' is a good start but i always thought the vocals sucked(the musics excellent though). 'Ulver - Natterns Madrigal' is probably my personal favorite bm album but it's almost painful to listen to it in one sitting because the production is ear splitting, the vocals are awesome for bm and ulver's other work(although after this album they changed genre's) is pretty great too. Immortal - Pure Holocaust is okay but ultimately a stereotype of the genre. Darkthrone released a string of excellent albums in theyre early years but they pretty much have sucked since 95' now. Anyways, get 'A Blaze in the Northren Sky', 'Under a Funeral Moon', and 'Transilvanian Hunger' as theyre all classics. Markduk's 'Opus Nocturne' is pretty sweet. Deathspell Omega has been releasing epic albums since about 2004, get 'Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice' ,'Fas – Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum', and 'Paracletus' Dissection's classic, get ' Storm of the Lights Bane ' and ' The Somberlain'. Blut Aus Nord kicks ass, one of the few bm bands to have a atmosphere without sounding horrible. get 'The Work Which Transforms God' if you like that, get the rest of theyre discography. Bathory is pretty well regarded and is considered one of the fathers of viking metal. unfortantly i haven't heard more than one album by them but it was pretty good. 'Blood Fire Death' ...also, death metal is the better than black metal.
The only black metal I enjoy are the classics and the pre-black metal type bands I guess you could call em. Sarcofago - INRI Bathory - Bathory Venom - Black Metal (I include this because the title obviously and themes were definitely influential) Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales Darkthrone - Ravishing Grimness and Soulside Journey, even though its a death metal record you should listen to it anyway Some Impaled Nazarene is pretty cool too. I never really liked Emperor or Mayhem or Immortal or any of that shit though, its too goofy for me.
No Comment hit the nail on the head. I suggest that you also listen to Filosfoem by Burzum. He comes up with a pretty nice sound on that album that's different than the S/T. Windir is another great Black Metal/Viking Metal band you should check out. As for Viking Metal, I suggest you check out Moonsorrow. They don't really identify with the genre, but they do have the sound that you're aiming for. Their songs are very epic; Most are never under 8 minutes, for example. Check out Voimasta ja Kunniasta. They also used to make some pretty neat black metal, a good example is the album, Tämä Ikuinen Talvi. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veedbId5rJk[/ame]
cool, thanks for all the answers. But i find it disturbing that the guy from burzum has killed someone from another band
the band wizard is awesome. they are a german power metal band with 7cds out currently. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgfErRHdxPw]YouTube - Wizard - The Powergod[/ame] idk if this is the kind of metal you meant but i like it and you might want to check it out.
