Black edges around the leaves on seedlings

  1. I'm on day 10 of the grow, and on all my seedlings the edges around the leaves are black, it's not thick, its a very fine line, Is this normal? Also, on one of my plants one of the first leaves has turned brown, I know that these are supposed to do this sooner or later, but is it supposed to happen this quick?

edit - I guess I should mention I am growing them under a 250w MH light, in sta-green soil, no nutes in the water or soil.

  2. what are they planted in and how close is your lites

  3. I edited the first post like 10 seconds before you posted :p but its sta-green 'flower planting mix'. Light is about 12 inches from the plants with a fan blowing on them.

  4. without pics , hard to say , but it does sound like lite heat stress, try moving the lites farther away for a couple weeks, mh lites are a bit strong for sprouts
I use flour's for seedlings with a slow intro to the mh lites

  5. yeah, i'd get a picture but only camera I have is on my cell phone and that wont do much good. I moved the light up a couple inches, and i'll probably pick up a Ph scale on my way home today (couldn't hurt). Thanks for your help +rep

  6. I would like to revisit your soil again. If it is for flowering plants, which means it could have a lot of Phosphorus in it. Are you sure there is no NPK on the bag of soil? I just did a search on your soil and came up with some interesting stuff. First off, Sta Green makes a lot of potting soil that has time release fertilizers in it. I think your soil has trace amounts but what it does have, that bothers me, is moisture retention properties. Moisture retaining soil for Marijane is very bad because the plants roots get suffocated with too much water and clumpy soil. My diagnosis for your plants is they probably have root rot due to too much moisture retention and they may also be slightly over fertilized.

As for the light, twelve inches away from a 250 watt MH is fine unless the temps in your room are too hot. What are the temps in the room? Where do the black leaves start; at the bottom of the plant moving up or vice versa? Do you know your soil ph? Check the bag of your soil one more time. Does it look like this? http://mulchandsoilcouncil.org/ProductCert/Consumer/ConsumerProducts/PPS/Sta_GreenFV.html
