Biodegradable cup - Is it possible to cut it open when roots are out on the sides

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Toyboy, Oct 31, 2023.

  1. Hi, I want to remove the bio cup before up potting the plant.
Is it possible to cut/tear open/remove the bio cup when roots are out on the sides without damaging the roots?
Maybe I can spray water around the cup until the material is very wet, making it soft around the roots, then slowly cut/tear it open. Not sure what to do. Looking for idea.

  5. I dont do it any specific time, im sure someone might say different but I just do it whenever, I've transplanted about 20ish plants(multiple times each) so far and haven't experienced any transplant shock

  10. I do soak the biodegradable pots first. Then, I'll tear out the bottom, and tear the pot from top to bottom on one side. I don't think that tearing the side is absolutely necessary, but I would remove the bottom for sure. I just don't want to restrict the roots from expanding into the new pot. Seems to me that a lot of biodegradable pots take a lifetime to degrade.

  11. Yeah, good point. Anyway, I can't tear off the sides cause the roots are running through it as you can see in the photos.

    This I understand.
This I don't. Those roots look like they need help to you?
Maybe he meant the roots need my help. lol

  13. I would disagree about the roots shredding that biodegradable cup. Here's a picture of the top soil of one of my okra plants, which also has a strong rooting system like cannabis. I have 7 plants, all of them in 5 gallon pots, and all of them are pretty much like this. These plants have been in my yard since early March and I just took this picture a few minutes ago. They have obviously disintegrated some, but you can see they are still there.

    Couple things though........
I purchased mine at Home Depot. Maybe there are other brands that will be toast sooner, but I just assumed they are all pretty much the same. Also JfromtheBeach mentioned soaking them first. Never thought of that. Very clever idea. Bottom line, though, is I would just stay away from those pots in the future LOL.
