Hi, I want to remove the bio cup before up potting the plant. Is it possible to cut/tear open/remove the bio cup when roots are out on the sides without damaging the roots? Maybe I can spray water around the cup until the material is very wet, making it soft around the roots, then slowly cut/tear it open. Not sure what to do. Looking for idea.
Roger that. Big pot is ready. Will up pot tomorrow. Up pot time, does it matter? Is there a recommended up pot time? I plan to do it around 1-3pm.
I dont do it any specific time, im sure someone might say different but I just do it whenever, I've transplanted about 20ish plants(multiple times each) so far and haven't experienced any transplant shock
I do soak the biodegradable pots first. Then, I'll tear out the bottom, and tear the pot from top to bottom on one side. I don't think that tearing the side is absolutely necessary, but I would remove the bottom for sure. I just don't want to restrict the roots from expanding into the new pot. Seems to me that a lot of biodegradable pots take a lifetime to degrade.
Yeah, good point. Anyway, I can't tear off the sides cause the roots are running through it as you can see in the photos.
This I understand. This I don't. Those roots look like they need help to you? Maybe he meant the roots need my help. lol
I would disagree about the roots shredding that biodegradable cup. Here's a picture of the top soil of one of my okra plants, which also has a strong rooting system like cannabis. I have 7 plants, all of them in 5 gallon pots, and all of them are pretty much like this. These plants have been in my yard since early March and I just took this picture a few minutes ago. They have obviously disintegrated some, but you can see they are still there. Couple things though........ I purchased mine at Home Depot. Maybe there are other brands that will be toast sooner, but I just assumed they are all pretty much the same. Also JfromtheBeach mentioned soaking them first. Never thought of that. Very clever idea. Bottom line, though, is I would just stay away from those pots in the future LOL.
No hes 100% saying ur roots are fine! They are coming through the pot, so they not gonna have any troubles continuing to grow
Peat cup sides completely removed. 15mins job. No roots broken. Plant fully recovered 48 hours after up pot.
