Bi polar disorder

Discussion in 'Pandora's Box' started by Pieces, Jan 16, 2010.

  1. My brother is bi polar, he was diagnosed with it a few years ago after a breakdown, he's on pills for it and it seems to keep him cool but i never really understood exactly what bi polar disorder is, can someone here explain it to me?

  2. Bipolar is a disorder in which the person will go through 3 states, normal, manic, and depression. In fact, your brother's breakdown was most likely caused by the bipolar. My mom has bipolar, and she had a manic breakdown years back.

  3. I'm Bi-polar, which I don't like saying for some reason. I rather say manic depressive.

    Includes:

    Depressive Episode:
feelings of sadness, anxiety, guilt, anger, isolation, or hopelessness; disturbances in sleep and appetite; fatigue and loss of interest in usually enjoyable activities; problems concentrating; loneliness, self-loathing, apathy or indifference; depersonalization; loss of interest in sexual activity; shyness or social anxiety; irritability, chronic pain (with or without a known cause); lack of motivation; and morbid suicidal ideation.

    Manic Episode:
Mania is generally characterized by a distinct period of an elevated, expansive, or irritable mood state. People commonly experience an increase in energy and a decreased need for sleep. A person's speech may be pressured, with thoughts experienced as racing. Attention span is low and a person in a manic state may be easily distracted. Judgment may become impaired; sufferers may go on spending sprees or engage in behavior that is quite abnormal for them. They may indulge in substance abuse, particularly alcohol or other depressants, cocaine or other stimulants, or sleeping pills. Their behavior may become aggressive, intolerant or intrusive. People may feel out of control or unstoppable. People may feel they have been "chosen," are "on a special mission," or other grandiose or delusional ideas. Sexual drive may increase.

  4. Bipolar disorder is when someone experiences frequent mood shifts ranging from extreme depression to the opposite side of the spectrum: mania. It's also known as manic-depressive disorder.

  5. Alright, that makes more sense to me. My brother had a depression episode but i never saw him having a manic episode really, he did quit his pills in order to try natural treatments he saw on the internet and had another episode, but since i think he's only had two and been fine for a while now.

  6. Well i'm bi polar and it makes you go from extremely uppity and anxious to normal to utterly depressed all in a day. It is hard to deal with and even harder for the people around you since they have no idea what you're gonna be like. With medication it can be very well controlled.
