best website for seeds?

Discussion in 'Gardening' started by Doc-J, Jan 5, 2013.

  1. Are there any seed websites that you guys would recommended? I want some ornamentals that can't be found at the local box stores. There seems to be quite a few choices, but I don't want to order a bunch of bunk seeds.

  2. Johnny's Selected Seeds has a good array. It depends on what you are looking to grow. There are lots of specialty sites that cater to certain interests. Horizon Herbs is good for some more curious selections, which are also useful as well as pretty to look st.

  3. Second the johnnys seeds, good stuff.

  4. Attitude Seed Bank is the only one I have any experience, but I got an amazing deal by taking advantage of a seasonal special.
I had a small issue with one of 12 not germinating, talked to customer service, they sent me a pair of the same strain to replace, as well as a freebie. A very nice and hot-sounding chick even offered me some advice for shipping: buy a 20 dollar shirt and they wrap everything up in it for added security. They're located in the netherlands and offer strains from all the top greenhouses, Barneys Farm, Cali Connection, etc etc. The website is awesome, the company top notch, and finding any strain i could ever want is as easy as pie. They have sorting options for every feature, and sell cannabis cup winners for the last several years.

10/10, am definitely ordering with them again.

  5. I definitively have to go with Johnny's Selected Seeds, so far that I've found, best selection/quality/germing rate and prices.

Not really looking for cannabis seeds, thanks though.

  7. i have tons of sites bookmarked for different reasons but the one that i suggest if your looking for anything specific is this:
    Plant Information Online
you can also use the search to the right of the page to look for nurseries that specialize in one thing or another: i.e. rare ornamentals
if you want all my bookmarked sites i can help you out there as well but i really like this one for finding things that are tough to get
for instance comptonia peregrina, or sweet fern, google pulled up one site that had them
this search engine pulled up 8 or so, 5 of which still had it in stock and 2 or 3 of which the plant was cheaper than prarie nursery was

Thanks. I will check it out. I am mainly looking for odd variaties of ipomoea right now. I like a variety of ornamentals though, anything with color really. Looking for varieties of Coleus as well, but they are pretty easy to find. A few things unique would be nice too. Most stores around here stock a boring variety of plants or don't take care of them well.

  9. looking for edible ipomoea's(morning glory family) or for high LSA content or simply for pretty looks?

Purely decorative. I have read a bit about the consumable ones, but I don't mess with that personally.

  11. i hear ya, well i have seen all sorts and its really about lloking around for the kind that suits you best in that regard but i have some seeds im growing out this year for a variety called granpa otts or something like that, its a milky white color and there are varieties ranging from blue to red and all sorts of stuff between
if ur in a warm enough area id suggest getting either sweet potatoes or the other variety thats bred for edible tubers(forgot the name of that one) simply because beauty is nice but it wont keep ya alive like food will, if nothing else though good luck in finding the right plant, mornin glories are pretty imo

My fave is Baker Creek: http://rareseeds.com. But a few specialty places are Everwilde for natives/wildflower seeds, Kitazawa for Asian veggies, Twiley and Stokes for bigger gardens. I've had a good experience with Johnny's, too.

    Potatoes from Wood Prairie.
    Onions from Dixondale.

Get the seed catalogs for free to brighten up your winter.

PS: Stay away from any Monsanto stuff you can! For real!

  13. i havent ordered from them but ive heard good things about baker seeds... and i have them bookmarked lol

  14. if you put some stuff in your cart on Baker Creek, and then don't buy right away, they'll start sending you discount codes of up to 10%. ;)

i didnt know that, +rep to you

also i like this site here simply because of their notice at the bottom thats required by the FDA, i.e. they dont like the FDA much, neither do i, so i like that about them, plus they have survival seed vaults specifically designed for storing emergency supplies of seeds and they normally have a deal of the day that ranges from one day to a few weeks at times before they get a new one, a nice feature i think

  16. Thanks for the rep! :)

If you want to read more about Monsanto and their misdeeds, one of the potato seed places I use has a ton of info:
    Organic Lawsuit Against Monsanto

The summary of the issue, from what I've read, is that Monsanto own not just the majority of the patents on the major food crops: they're genetically modified (GMO) so that certain "features", like weed resistance, are bred into the seeds. Monsanto also owns the rights to the herbicide. So, in for a penny, in for a pound - you can only use the "roundup ready" crops, and then you have to use Roundup.

Trouble is, seeds will cross-pollinate from the big farms over to the little ones, and then Monsanto goes after farmers who've violated their "patents".

I'm sure I've oversimplified here, but it's a tricky, nasty bit of big business.

Don't even get me started on the farm bill. I'm probably the only 20-something girl I know who watches the agriculture report with such fascination. HUGE GARDEN DORK.

  17. Here's a link to Monsanto owned seed companies.

  18. Baker also has a beautiful catalog. I'm a nerd for paper catalogs. Which is probably why the AARP just sent me a newsletter. Dooooooode I'm 25.

  19. i like the single seed centre.

  20. If you are looking for something organic, you can go with high mowing seeds.

I really like their selection and they have some good prices compared to others.

I buy them for like $1.10 per packet. And yes they are all organic, open pollinated.

Check on youtube, tons of videos about their farm in Vermont.
