Best ways or products to prevent pests?

Discussion in 'Growing Organic Marijuana' started by Deleted member 985876, Apr 19, 2018.

  1. Hello everyone so I'm overwhelmed the amount information on the subject. And google seems to be of no help. What are your ways of preventing spider mites, or mold or mildew or any other common pests? And it has to be safe and organic. These plants will going outdoors in about a week or so. I started them under CFL's mid winter.

  2. Neem/karanja meal in the soil as mentioned along with a topdress. BT for budworms. Green Cure for PM. Sticky cards for fliers. Fat mulch layer.
I also use Essential oils with some soap and water as a pest spray - these are fun to make because you can add all kinds of nastiness. The soap is key - it suffocates pests and keeps the mix around longer.

IMO these products or variants of them are all you really need unless big animals or gophers are a problem.
    Happy killing

  3. Well... not really... one can certainly still get spider mites with Neem mixed into their soil although it is a positive step in the right direction. I say this out of experience - and that the foliage should still be sprayed routinely as part of an IPM program.

Good organic Neem cake is a most excellent soil amendment, providing both nutritional and pesticide properties in the soil, and can also be soaked for 48 hours or so to use as a foliage spray but I might not count on it altogether to prevent spider mites if it’s only in the soil.

It IS one of the best soil amendments out there for a potting soil though. I’ve just seen spider mite infestations on several occasions with it in my soil - the IPM part is key, as well as keeping the healthiest plants you can.

  5. Yup. The socal surper mite laughs at neem oil, neem meal, azamax, spinosad. The best folier ive used is horticultural oil, but only use twice in veg or risk killing your plant. This year im going with predator mites, but those catties, and grasshopper, i think i need some chickens.

  6. You can increase the effectiveness of your EO & Neem/Karanja Oil (studies show they work best together vs alone.). By adding 91% ISO to the mix, this ensures that it will penetrate the tougher bugs exoskeleton and help kill them.

    Basic recipe
    Per 1 gal water
    2 tsp Neem Oil
    1 tsp Karanja Oil
    1 tbsp 91% ISO
    1 tsp Yucca Extract.

You can add Aloe, Soap nuts, or even a little dawn soap to help emulsify the oil and spread it evenly across the leaf surface. I personally use Yucca Extract Therm70X.

I use a small blender to emulsify the ingredients and add to a gal of warm-ish water.

  8. Be proactive not reactive.
Once a week spray organic pest controllers.
Neem oil, pyrethrin, azadirachtin, rosemary oil, bacilus thurengiensis.
    A few examples.
Alternate sprays to keep pests from building tolerances to these pesticides.
I like Safer 3 in 1, Safer Caterpillar Killer and Neem oil.
Spray one first week, next one next week and final one on 3rd week.
This along with diligent inspections looking for eggs and worms and mold should keep you pretty much pest free.
