Best 8-bit tunes

Discussion in 'Gamer's Heartbeat' started by Space, Aug 9, 2010.

  1. Anyone else have a favoutire oldschool tune or 2 to share? And, please, let's leave the obvious (Mario themesong/Zelda themesong) out. :)

    Here's a few to get things started

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rkaiKYEkDQ]YouTube - ‪ninja gaiden nintendo nes introduction‬‎[/ame]
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOKPIG23vgY]YouTube - ‪Zelda: Link's Awakening Music - Ballad of the Wind Fish Song‬‎[/ame]
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNJJ-QkZ8cM]YouTube - ‪Pokemon Blue/Red - Lavender Town‬‎[/ame]
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALBTQMzD2so]YouTube - ‪Pokemon Gold and Silver - Dark Cave, Slowpoke Well, Ice Path (music)‬‎[/ame]
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_Mm4FMA3ks]YouTube - ‪Mega Man 3 Intro‬‎[/ame]

    The way these computerized tunes can work their way so deeply into you is...something else.

  2. Got a few good ones for ya:

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll76Saz_kDY]YouTube - ‪NES Title Screen Music - Darkwing Duck‬‎[/ame]
    Great 8-bit rendition of a classic theme song (LOVED this show and the game as a kid)

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2g1_fZAXOw&feature=related]YouTube - ‪nes collections - legacy of the wizard - warrior's theme‬‎[/ame]
    Legacy of the Wizard -- so many good songs to choose from, I wanted them all! Had to pick one though, so this is it!

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcXxN03Md1I]YouTube - ‪River City Ransom for NES - Stage 1‬‎[/ame]
    Gotta love that bass line (it gets better as the song progresses) and the little guitar solo about half-way through. Classic!

    More will pop into my head soon, I'm sure of it.

  3. RSR fuck yeah

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI4hC7G8BmA&feature=related]YouTube - ‪Boss Battle - River City Ransom‬‎[/ame]

    Never played Darkwing Duck...but that was a pretty good rendition of the theme.

    Ducktales had some awesome music too! It's rendition of the theme was sick...but as far as its original music goes

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KF32DRg9opA]YouTube - ‪DuckTales Music (NES) - The Moon Theme‬‎[/ame]

    Also....How's Legacy of the Wizard. I have the first 2, which would you reccomend?

    I've only played #1 on NES, but I have many fond memories of it as a kid (except I hated the 'game over' screen, watching your character spin with that ominous music in the background). Picked it up again recently and I will say that the fetch quests can be a little boring.

    It's, in essence, a side-scrolling platformer with PLENTY of items to buy and find, kind of like a spelunking game (it reminds me of a VERY watered-down version of La Mulana). The aquisition of gold and items, in addition to the HP/MP/Gold system, gives it a small RPG-style element as well. However, there's not really any text (at all) to advance the story and no leveling up. You basically go from beginning to end fetching items, dodging traps and killing monsters until you reach your goal.

    I have serious nostalgia goggles on for this game. However, I would still recommend it even without the childhood memories.

    EDIT: And the Duck Tales moon music! Why didn't I think of that?!

  5. First stage of Batman

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCA_msAEn8k"]YouTube - ‪Batman (NES) - Streets of Desolation [Stage 1]‬‎[/ame]

    The whole of Castlevania has some good music too. Less obvious for some, though there's the classic Castlevania theme "Vampire Killer"

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AZ5XZHIDh0"]YouTube - ‪Castlevania- Vampire Killer‬‎[/ame]

    Then there's Simon's Quest night music, which freaked me out as a kid.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EllL0Co_efE"]YouTube - ‪Castlevania 2 Music - Monster Dance (AKA Night)‬‎[/ame]

    One interest bred solely by my like for the old school games is finding songs that use the same melodies redone with instrumentation (OCRemix has some good stuff too). The Dracula Perfect Battle Selection is a great example (this also being Vampire Killer):

    The last is from the Arcade version of TMNT 2 for NES (the arcade game came before any of the NES games, btw).

    This makes me wanna go play TMNT on live arcade. I think I shall do that. Time to kick shell :devious:

  9. Man, Space, so glad you made this thread! Some of these songs I'm coming across are really awesome, but here are some that are just too friggin' legendary for me to ignore:

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7K0SCfzEu3g&feature=related]YouTube - ‪Darkwing Duck (NES) Music - Bushroot Stage‬‎[/ame]
    More Darkwing/Disney catchy-ness. Let's get dangerous!

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ9xwkMr3e4]YouTube - ‪Wizards and Warriors NES - Music Intro‬‎[/ame]
    8-bit classical-style piano music, short but brilliant!

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=804eyXBWojY&feature=related]YouTube - ‪Gyruss (NES) Music - Prologue Theme‬‎[/ame]
    Gyruss. 'Nuff said. The intro to this one actually gave me memorable nightmares as a kid.

    Fuck yeah x2 Both those games had amazing music.

    Also, one of the tracks I posted earlier, for Lavender Town, was altered after the original release of Pokemon Red+Green. The developers allegedly made the original song using a special technique, to "leave an impression on the player" (I'll look for the article on this), but in short, it caused kids to become addicted to the game, and have convulsions, vomiting, etc, when deprived of it...leading to many of these kids killing themselves.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZOd_gFld9c"]YouTube - ‪Pokémon Red/Green (JPN, V1.0 ONLY) - The original Lavender Town theme‬‎[/ame]

    You can definitely hear a difference, there's no question the song was changed after the first release. But as to why, we may never know....

    EDIT: Listen to this with good quality stereo headphones, if you can.

  14. Proof that Pokémon is trying to kill children. Look at this, then look at the seizure-inducing light show that caused such an ordeal so many years ago. Makes me wonder if Pokémon wasn't originally some kind of "population control" measure created by the Japanese government with Nintendo as a front.

    But maybe Nintendo began making so much money off of their new craze that they decided to go against the govt's plan (which the video-game powerhouse Nintendo was funding fully, btw, Japanese government=tightwads) and remove all of the "addictive" elements from the game, tv series, and action figures (made of toxic materials that mimic a synthetic form of heroin made to absorb slowly into the skin). The so-called "accidents" were played off as just that -- accidents.

    Nintendo went on to make massive amounts of money from their once-murderous franchise, and Pokémon became so beloved around the world that the Japanese government didn't even need to create a cover-up. I think the Pokémon team is done with genocide, however. Next project is a race war. :D

    (Based on a true story. :smoking: Damn I'm so bored...)

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5mK2SV7Dws"]YouTube - ‪StarTropics Music - Cave‬‎[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZeqS7Covzw"]YouTube - ‪Metal Storm [OST] - Game Over‬‎[/ame]
    Happy Video Game Nerd and I agree on this; this is the most depressing Game Over music ever.

  15. ^^Eh, not sure about it being the most depressing GO music even in 8-bit...Final Fantasy's was pretty sad (50 seconds in here):

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTLMdnFY2S4"]YouTube - ‪Final Fantasy NES - Game Over‬‎[/ame]

    My vote for most depressing song (probably best soundtrack overall) ever goes to Chrono Cross. My mom, having never heard the song or seen the game before, started tearing up at this song. That's powerful music:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoJx0vdCCZo"]YouTube - ‪Chrono Cross ~ People Seized with Life‬‎[/ame]

    One of the best uses of the NES audio processor, Mega Man 2 Wily Stage 1

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fFRCUQLqKk"]YouTube - ‪Mega Man 2 OST, T17: Dr. Wily Stage 1 (Wily's Castle)‬‎[/ame]

  16. I gotta go 16-bit on this one, favorite soundtrack = Illusion of Gaia for the SNES.

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erKDJjWqjvs&feature=related]YouTube - ‪Illusion of Gaia: Itory Village/Lily's Village‬‎[/ame]
    A little boy, half-starved, takes your hand and drags you across the screen to a pile of bones. He doesn't speak your language, but as his eyes tear up, you realize that said "pile of bones" was once a mother or father to this child. As all of this is happening, this song is playing in the background. I got something in my eye during this scene, but I wasn't crying... really...

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRDiZweXKkQ]YouTube - ‪VG Music : Illusion of Gaia - Dream‬‎[/ame]
    This song is beautiful, perfect fit for the scene (main character's dream of deceased mother).

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzWi5EIeXxs&feature=related]YouTube - ‪14 The Guardian‬‎[/ame]
    The boss music! It's so frantically cool, AND it really give the player a sense of urgency (which works well with some of the fast-paced and difficult battles).

    I highly recommend this game. The story is a spider web of world history, mythology from various cultures, and even religions (your main objective throughout the game is to get to the Tower of Babel. AWESOME.), spun together in an action-packed fairy tale. This game is a perfect 10, IMHO.
