Bench Press Problems

Discussion in 'Fitness, Health & Nutrition' started by HerbJedenTag, Sep 15, 2012.

  1. Sup guys

Whenever I bench I feel a muscle starting to cramp on the underside of my thigh.

Its really annoying because in the middle of the bench it comes on rapidly and I have to have my spotter pull it up.

Any thoughts to what this could be.

  2. Sounds like you're planting your heels and using a bit of momentum from your legs to lift the bar?

  3. Used to happen to me when I was lifting too much weight. It was a weight that I was able to lift, but it caused unnecessary strain. It was cool at first, but after doing it for so long. It started creating problems. Leg cramps that went away, and a bum shoulder that'll never be the same. Make sure your form is good and that you're not using too much weight.

Put your feet up on the bench, with your knees bent

You're digging your feet into the ground to drive the bar upward. You need to be just using your chest. Putting your feet on the bench will ensure that you're only using your chest.

Of course, don't put your feet on the bench if you're going for a one-rep max or anything like that.

  5. Thanks guys for the responses, I realized that I do put my feet into te ground.

  6. What I have been doing lately is holding ny knees at a 90 degree above me and balance using only my core and back. I do this for all sets except my final but I really have seen an improvement as form becomes super critical to not fall or tilt. Give it a try one of these days and you'll see what I mean.

  7. A lot of people bench press too much weight. When I was weightlifting, I was doing 20-50 pounds lighter than other people but I had better form so I was getting bigger muscles and seeing faster results.

Not that I never did add more weight, I just went up in weight slower than the people I was working out with.
