Well Ive wondered myself and thought it would be helpful to post a thread that contains a short list of strains beginning growers can give a go.

This has grown quite a bit since I started it and it seems people have found it helpful so Im here with the update/bump! Feel free to drop any easy/noob strains I can add in. Hope this helps, thanks GC!

*Note: All the information posted here I found scouring the net, some of the info may vary a bit, maybe even lack a little...but its supposed to be a basic guideline so beginners can do further research.

That being said, lets start with:

This indica/sativa hybrid is crossed back and selected on her sweetly taste and great yield. A beautiful plant loads of crystals sweetly taste and a happy high. This plant is easy to grow so good for beginners.

    The Forbidden Fruit

Le Fruit Defendu is french for the forbidden fruit. The search was for a cannabis plant which would match with our "Light of Jah" a plant with fruity tones, a heavy taste and ditto high. We chose a blueberry with delicious berry taste and beautiful blue/pinky flowers and green leafs which colours with colder teperatures. The mix "Light of Jah" which produces higher yield and the blueberry taste, colours and delicious high, make this plant a must for the connoisseur of taste and plant. These cannabis plants have strong grow-potential, at the start you suspect sativa influences, this stops fast after the lights are switched to 12/12 hours to force flowering. After 7 to 8 weeks "Le Fruit Defendu" is ready for harvesting. Water runs trough our mouth by thinking of this delicate experience of taste.

    Bubblegum

Bubblegum was our first contribution to the seed world in 1993. Over the last decade it has proven, through numerous awards and world wide fame, that this plant is here to stay. We successfully inbred and stabilised this plant for it's most desirable characteristics, it's fruity smell, thick lingering flavor and short soldier like stature. Bubblegum breeds true, and has been used by many seed companies to produce award winning hybrids, and will make a great cornerstone for your breeding program. This is a true superplant!

    The Endless Sky

Endless Sky tends toward a single, tight and chunky central cola, although she may form a few short side branches. Buds range from soda-can size up to the size of two-liter soda bottle when ripe. The ripe buds are heavy for their girth and crusty with trichomes. Endless Sky's sun leaves are large and display characteristics midway between indicas and sativas, with a tendecy toward the wider indica leaf pattern. Leaves often turn to pink or yellow-pink at maturity.
The poetic name is a pleasure to say but may also be a reflection on the buzz, which is very open and spacey. This varity produces a potent, indica-type stone that has been reported toprovide pain relief. One hit warms your whole head almost instantly. This is not a good toke when preparing to dive or operate heavy machinery. Endless Sky's dense smoke tastes earthy, like hash, and produces a dreamy, hashy experience that lasts up to four hours.

    Spoetnik

Spoetnik #1 is a versatile plant with excellent resistance to a wide variety of horticultural problems. She has compact rock hard buds, and offers an unusually cerebral stone for a pure Indica – an uplifting, meditative awareness.
This variety is a superb spectacle. Her slow start may cause growers concerns. Suddenly, out of nowhere, she bursts forth around day 38 or 40 of the flowering cycle. Spoetnik #1 seems like she is reviving her engines, storing up everything she is fed for the countdown in the last 2 weeks of flowering, when she explodes with amazing power.
By harvest, the plants look oily, thanks to their heavy coating of glands. Her colas form into rockets: long and cylindrical.
She tastes like dark Corinthian grapes mixed with a mineral, astringent touch on the exhale.
The effects of this pure Indica strain are surprisingly uplifting, with no physical crash at the end. The high is felt mostly on the top of the head and in the face.

    Red Dragon

The parentage of this line is exotic – a West Himalayan Kush crossed with a true breeding Brazilian sativa. (Utopia Haze)
These buds have a distinct and immediate, exotic sativa high, but is followed minutes later by a wonderful undertow of a solid Kush stone that lasts and lasts. Finished buds have a taste and smell of sweet guava fruit.
Red Dragon grows medium short (80cm) and produces heavy colas of unique red/green buds. Flowering time is short (max 9 weeks) giving big yield of highly prized product, that fnishes by mid to end September.

    Silver Haze

By crossing the Haze, the most powerful Sativa in the World, to a non-dominant Indica cannabis seeds it became possible to get the height and flowering time of the plant down to an acceptable level and still retain the unique Sativa qualities of the high. The results: the Silver Haze, winner of the 2007 Best Strain Cannabis Cup and 1989 High Times Harvest Festival. Don't expect top yields but top quality that will excite You to the bones! The taste is much like the crystal flavour; a bit of eucalyptus-fruit. This gear gets you VERY stoned. I made the mistake of smoking this on a Wednesday morning and I was certainly baked! I laid back on the floor as the sun filled my living room. This lasts for a while so don't smoke this gear when you got things to do!

    White Widow

This strain is the strongest weed in the world. The buds have so much THC on them that it is hard to see the bud at all. The high is extreme and the taste divine. This weed has won more cups than any before. On the top of all dutch coffeeshop menu's (mostly the most expensive!) A must for anyone who thinks they are a smoker !!

The most rewarded variety of recent years in Holland. The plants are white of THC-glands, even on big parts of the fan leaves. A very soft smoke and great "High". One of a kind, the winner of the Cannabis Cup 1995. This plant is the strongest among the weed species. A short plant with rather few leaves. Very quick hitting and a good combo of body high with a bit of uplifting. Awesome, unforgettable!

    AK-47

This easy-to-grow plant is Serious Seeds' most popular. It is of medium height and produces good yields quite quickly. Extremely strong odour and smoke, so take extra care over odour control when growing near neighbours.
The name is not linked to any idea of violence, but is more in association with the one hit wonder; that the smoke is. Quality without compromise makes AK suitable for commercial grows or home use. These plants have a short flowering period for a Sativa, producing compact, not too leafy buds that gleam with a coat of resin crystals.
The plant has thus far won seven prizes in various Cannabis competitions, including second prize for the Best Sativa in the 1999 High Times Cannabis Cup, which is proof that AK is a favourite to smoke as well as to grow.
Very strong, long lasting and pleasant high. An independent lab test showed 21.5% THC in the samples at the Cannabis Cup 1999, the highest of all entries that year!

    AK-48

AK-48 has been known to finish in 48 days (hence the name) if everything goes well and the plant is well-maintained AK-48 itself is short, squat, bushy plant and an indica/sativa hybrid. You can really notice AK-48's sativa qualities in the high.
A great plant to start with for beginners.
AK-48 can bounce back from a missed feeding or an over-watering. Though it is not recommended. It's also a great strain for more advanced growers due to its potency and high yield. Not known for good tasting buds, AK-48 produces sticky, dense nugs that hold a powerful high. And, sometimes even a contact high.

    Sharksbreath

With amazing flavor and smell and an outstanding buzz, the guys at DNA Genetics have done an excellent job in creating this very special plant. The Sharksbreath is a highly potent strain. Short stout plants pack on frosty and very dense buds. A heavy feeder, good air flow is also required to prevent bud rot. A great low odor variety for the grower wanting a special headstash.

    White Rhino

White Rhino is a powerful F1 hybrid of White Widow and a curiously strong North American indica strain. White Rhino could have medicinal applications because of its high T.H.C. content. The taste of this smoke is hashy and slightly harsh, a good bong smoke. The American father of the Rhino is more indica than the White Widow father, creating a denser and somewhat shorter plant. The buzz is stoney and comes on hard.

Combine this with an excellent blended with good power and you have an excellent plant. This hearty one is worth grabbing a few cannabis seeds. Leaves a wonderful fresh taste in your mouth. It is composed of 60% indica traits and the rest 40% is sativa. The effect produced when buds are smoked is energetic high that is positive. No trippy feeling!
Sour Diesel is best for indoor and outdoor growing with 10 weeks flowering time. This may not be a good strain for SOG set up because it is a stretch strain. It is called in such a name because Sour cannabis plants will produce buds with light green color that will turn pinkish when almost time for harvest. When smoked, it will give its distinct sour taste. Indoor and outdoor yield will range from 450 to 550 grams per m2, depending on the grow method used, vegetative period and grow season.

Hope this helps a few newcomers figure out a basic guideline to picking a strain. Like I said further research will still be needed, but at least you can narrow it down a little bit. Good luck blades.

  2. Nitrogen. N is the most common deficiency of cannabis indoors or out. The first sign is a gradual, uniform yellowing of the large, lower leaves. Once the leaf yellows, necrotic tips and areas form as the leaves dry to a gold or rust color. Symptoms that accompany N deficiency include red stems and petioles, smaller leaves, slow growth, and a smaller, sparse profile.

Remedy by fertilizing with any soluble N fertilizer or with a complete fertilizer that is high in N. If your diagnosis is correct, some recovery should be visible in three or four days. New growth will be much more vigorous and new stems and petioles will have normal green color. Indoors, you should expect plants to need N fertilization a few times during growth. Once a plant shows a N deficiency, you should fertilize regularly to maintain healthy and vigorous growth.

Phosphorus. P deficiency is characterized by slow and sometimes stunted growth. Leaves overall are smaller and dark green; red color appears in petioles and stems. The leaves may also develop red or purple color starting on the veins of the underside of the leaf. Generally the tips of most of the leaf blades on the lower portion of the plant die before the leaves lose color. Lower leaves slowly turn yellow before they die. Remedy with any soluble P-containing fertilizer. Affected leaves do not show much recovery, but the plant should perk up, and the symptoms do not progress.

Potassium. Often, K-deficient plants are the tallest and appear to be the most vigorous. Starting on the large lower leaves, the tips of the blades brown and die. Necrotic areas or spots form on the blades, particularly along the margins. Sometimes the leaves are spattered with chlorotic tissue before necrosis develops, and the leaves look pale or yellow. Red stems and petioles accompany potassium deficiencies.

K deficiencies can be treated with any fertilizer that contains potassium. Wood ashes dissolved in water are a handy source. Recovery is slow. New growth will not have the red color, and leaves will stop spotting after a couple of weeks.

Calcium. Ca deficiencies are rare and do not occur if you have added any lime compound or wood ash. But Ca is added primarily to regulate soil chemistry and pH. Make sure that you add lime to soil mixtures when adding manures, cottonseed meal, or other acidic bulk fertilizers. An excess of acidic soil additives may create Mg or Fe deficiencies, or very slow, stunted growth. Remedy by adding one teaspoon of dolomitic lime per quart of water until the plants show marked improvement. Foliar feeding is most beneficial until the soil's chemistry reaches a new balance.

Sulfur. S deficiencies sometimes can be confused with N deficiencies and may also occur because of an excess of other nutrients in the soil solution. S deficiency symptoms usually start at the top of the plant. There is a general yellowing of the new leaves. In pots, the whole plant may lose some green color. Both S and Mg deficiencies can be treated with the same compound, epsom salts, or bathing salts, which are inexpensive and available at drug stores.

Magnesium. Mg deficiencies frequently occur in soilless mixtures, since many otherwise all-purpose fertilizers do not contain Mg. Mg deficiencies also occur in mixtures that contain very large amounts of Ca or Cl. Symptoms of Mg deficiency occur first on the lower leaves. There is chlorosis of tissue between the veins, which remain green, and starting from the tips the blades die and usually curl upward. Purple color builds up on stems and petioles.

You may first notice Mg symptoms at the top of the plant. The leaves in the growing shoot are lime-colored. In extreme cases, all the leaves turn practically white, with green veins. Treat Mg symptoms with one-half teaspoon of epsom salts to each quart of water, and water as usual. The top leaves recover their green color within four days, and all but the most damaged should recover gradually. Continue to fertilize with epsom salts as needed until the plants are flowering well.

Iron. Fe is likely to be deficient when the soil is very acid or alkaline. Under these conditions, the iron becomes insoluble. Remedies include adjusting the pH before planting; addition of rusty water; or driving a nail into the stem. Commercial Fe preparations are also available. If the soil is acidic, use chelated iron, which is available to the plants under acidic conditions. Symptoms appear first on the new growing shoots. The leaves are chlorotic between the veins, which remain dark green. Iron symptoms are usually most prominent on the growing shoots.

Manganese. Mn deficiency appears as chlorotic and then necrotic spots of leaf tissue between veins. They generally appear on the younger leaves, although spots may appear over the whole plant. Mn is present in many all-purpose fertilizers.

Boron. Symptoms of B deficiency first appear at the growing shoots, which die and turn brown or gray. The shoots may appear "burned." A sure sign of boron deficiency is that, once the growing tip dies, the lateral buds will start to grow, but will also die. B deficiency can be corrected by application of boric acid, which is sold as an eyewash in any drugstore. Use one-fourth teaspoon per quart of water. Recovery occurs in a few days with a healthy growth of new shoots.

Molybdenum. Mb is readily available at neutral or alkaline pH. Mb is essential for nitrogen metabolism in the plant, and symptoms can be masked for a while when N fertilizers are being used. There is a yellowing of the leaves at the middle of the plant. Mb is included in many all-purpose fertilizers.

Zinc. Zn-deficiency symptoms include chlorosis of leaf tissue between the veins. Chlorosis or white areas start at the leaf margins and tips. More definite symptoms are very small, new leaves which may also be twisted or curled radially. Galvanized nails can be buried or pushed into the stem. Commercial preparations of zinc are also available.

Copper. Cu deficiencies are rare; be careful not to confuse their symptoms with those of overfertilization. Starting with the younger leaves, which become necrotic at the tips and margins, leaves will appear somewhat limp, and in extreme cases the whole plant will wilt. Treat by foliar-spraying with a commercial fungicide such as CuSO4.

Quick list I have on hand.

  3. Great post and data here. May I also suggest sour diesel as a great beginner strain. It stays fairly low, is robust and never fussy, and produces a terrific high. Very pungent and stinky. :D
