Beginner Indo Hydro Questions

Discussion in 'Marijuana Grow Journals' started by wizknob, Apr 18, 2008.

  1. Hey everyone, ive been piecing together info from this site for a while, then last week i started my first indoor grow. Im sure i could learn a lot from you guys postin with my probs/questions so i appricate any responses. Heres the setup ... its been about a week and im not sure if i should be seeing more improvement with the germinating, it seems like its going really slow, maybe halted, but maybe im just be impatient. The second pic is of day 3 or so and then day 5 and then today, which is probably 7 actually, not too much change, what do you guys think? Should i have the light on all the time at this stage? Hows about temp, i got it pretty warm in there, which i thought would be better for the germinating.

  2. Your seeds should be fully covered. They need to be in the dark to germinate.

  3. you want it warm not hot but if the humidity isnt high enough that will also slow it down you may want to fabricate a humidity dome and put it over them(cling wrap over a cut-off cup, etc.) and also like help_needed said they need to be fully covered in darkness or buried deeper in the rockwool

You did follow some kind of germination guide correct? and honestly i would keep your rockwool cube out of the hydroton until you see roots out of the bottom

ah hah maybe this will do for ya try it if you feel but im not telling you to do it

if you dont have a tray w/ humid dome put a rockwool cube in a cup with ceran wrap over it and just make sure that the rockwool cube stays moist once your first set of true leaves pops out then put it in your hydro system/soil potting mix
honestly i do use party cups and yes that is how i do it but then again what may work for one may not for another

hopefully someone really experienced chimes in here for ya GL ill be watching:p

  4. and i just looked at your pic. if thats the SH bubbleponics kit im sorry to inform you that me and another person just ruled out that unless your some kind of miracle worker after those plants get about 6-8'' tall you start running into some real problems

please i am trying to help i know it sucks they took $200 from me that i regret
dont use their nutes or ph controls they build up white shit and algae
use some kind of reflective tape on the res or else algae builds up because light goes through

check out my thread and my buddy darths

    and

dont get me wrong they start off well but they just cannot support much bigger than 1' in total
if that it not something from Stealth Hydro let me know but if it is than make sure you read up to fix problems before they happen

  5. Zab - yea its a SH bubble, i was hesitant, but felt like i saw other people growin sucessfully in it, but now im beginning to understand i will run into problems. you still got a harvest off your setup right? I was just lookin through the threads, i can make it work with your guys help, maybe i got ripped off but im still going to give it a go, who knows maybe it will work out? I just threw some paper towel over my rockwool and put some cerain (however the fuck u spell that) wrap over them which should create some more humidity and then keep them in the dark.

  6. good that should help your babies . and you can grow in them the bubbleponics its just your gonna run into problems thats why i was giving you the links to at least our posts so you can kill of the problems before they happen. so you dont have to deal with the same shit.

acutally my 1 remaining plant(of 4 planted in the SH kit) is in a bubblebucket i moved it because i was having too many problems on the other hand darth is going to finish off this grow with his so i would definately look closey into what he's doing its a very nice setup and a lot of info has been put into the thread so read PM me darth and many many others in both of our threads that have helped us will surely help you thats what GC is here for.

GL im subscribed so ill be watching frequently

  7. somebody tell me,where i can find rockwool? today went to market, but i couldnt find like you got,and really dont know where to look for it :? i mean those little ones.

or you just bought simple rockwool[which are used in building] and cut it in small pieces?

  8. order it from an online source if you dont have a local hydro shop you can use anywhere really and its super fuckin cheap try doin a search on bizrate or something

    truevisionhydroponics
    htgsupply
    stealthhydro

    etc etc

its like on average $3-4 for 20 cubes

  9. Hey guys, a little update...... my first experience with germinating with rockwool hasnt turned out all that great, although the seeds werent all that great either. Since I switched to more humidity and darkness I have one that looks somewhat promising however its been over a week now and the three that have any signs of germinating havent done much. The most promising one has some growth wanting to pop out of it. Anyone know what is the best time to switch from darkness to light, when do they want light? i ordered some seeds from Nirvana a few days ago, just sent the cash yestarday, plus my buddy may be sending me some too, so if this round doesnt work out no biggy, just going to paper towel/cup germinate the new seeds when they come, but if i can get at least this one to grow then id be happy with some more experience before i get my other seeds. Bummer, but aw well, better seeds a commin. But yea, when should i throw the light on that puppy?

  10. i usually give them light when they are about 2-3 days after poppin outta the rockwool

  11. I am planning on buying the SH 6 bucket bubbleponics system without their lights and getting 6 LED grow spotlights off of ebay with Ionic grow, bloom, and boost nutrients does this seem like it would be a good setup for decent yields

  12. Don't.

    1. the reservoir is not light proof
    2. there is not enough room in one of those things for maybe but 1 or 2 healthy plants. It's only a 6 gallon reservoir, and to my knowledge healthy plants need 3-5 gallons EACH in hydro.
    3. It's entirely too overprices. For what they offer, you could make your own for 30 bucks.

My first grow was in one and it got pretty fucked because of the combination of my inexperience and their shoddy products.

AVOID and build something yourself. Check my current grow (in my signature) to see a bubbleponics system I built myself.

    Hope this helps.

  13. so could i use a 12 gallon container, cover it in mylar and copy what thay have done and do alright? and how would the lights do

  14. i think you should be you just want to watch and make sure you have no algae growth and that your water temps stay preferably below 72F i know you can(at least where im at) pick up a light meter for like 10 bucks thats attached by a thin wire to the handset do what you want to to your res put it in and close it in there also with a water temp gage.
then expose it to extreme light and see if it gets any kind of light reading if so back to the drawing board to try again

and the only downside to using 1 res for multiple plants is that when a male pops up you have to take it out if you dont want your fems getting pollinated so what youd have to do is take it out and chances are its going to be tangled with other roots which youll then have to cut.

thatll cause your fems to be stressed and POSSIBLY go hermie( which sucks ive done it )
or cause otherr res porblems which are a hassle anyways so if your wanna go that route ive seen people use those fish tank seperators to seperate roots from each other and yet water can pass over them so the waters not more concentrated in one area more than another.

so you can do it if thats your wish itll work just the same just be careful and keep a close eye on things.

but thats why i went to BB but the downside to them is that they are pretty big compared to using what your talking about.

ive used both with good results the only downside to one res for multiple plants are trying to take males and hermies out

    hope that helps peace:D

  15. I'm really not familiar with their lights. I've never used them.

That said, you could use a 12 gallon container and copy what they're doing. I'd get one a bit bigger. The water won't fill it (you want the water level just a little below the net pots) so you'd want a 20 gallon container or so to get 4 gallons for 4 plants each, etc.

Just mylar won't do the trick IMO. I used three layers of duct tape and then mylar over that on the top to get mine lightproof.

Of course, all this is just my opinion so YMMV.

  16. yeah darths very right it takes a lot to lightproof anything not thick and black( lmao no comments please ) and about the bigger res

BTW WTF does YMMV mean darth lol:smoking:

  17. lmao @ thick and black

YMMV = your mileage may vary :smoke:

  18. word it does thanks, i was thinking i could just cut the males roots farther away from the other plant or plants it was connected with and leaving the roots that were attatched to the others

  19. Well, the problem with that is that they'll rot in the water and possibly cause some bad shit to grow in there. You can use something like Hygrozyme, which is supposed to basically eat any dead plant matter in the water, but I didn't have much luck with it. I had to deal with dead root matter in my reservoir a lot during my first grow because of the root rot issues I had. I kept cutting out sections of my root system to try to keep it healthy and well...it's a pain in the ass.

That said, I did have to take a plant or two out of my reservoir that had roots tangled. I didn't have much of a problem untangling them though, personally. Not sure why it wasn't an issue, but the only problems I had with roots were related to root rot.
