Hi all, I decided to do a soil grow as hydro was unsuccessful, stumped everyone involved ( 2 grow stores, many advanced growers, internet assistance). I wanted to dial everything back and get to basics. I germinated a gorilla cookie seed 15 days ago in a peat pellet starter I have a 48"x48"x72" grow tent Mars Hydro 300W LED light 18/6, 36 inches away Small fan indirectly moving air around I germinated a gorilla cookie seed 15 days ago in a peat pellet starter Temp is mid 70's 24/7 Humidity around 55% Just straight tap water <200 ppm Charcoal filter and in-line fan for exhaust Seedling emerged after 4-5 days, put CFL few inches above right away. ~5 days later, placed starter in flower cup (holes in bottom) with Vigoro normal potting soil surrounding it, swapped to LED light About a week later the growth has all but stopped with emergence of second set of leaves New growth is much more yellow, and leaves are twisted. Had extremely similar results in hydro with variety of strains with stunted growth very early and eventual deaths weeks later as all attempted changes lead to zero fixes. I have been told by a good friend who grows anything and everything for fun and is quite an expert IMO, said he believes it is root based and not light as it's new growth affected. But even he is stumped. I plan on buying rapid rooters and a generic soil to keep medium from being too much of anything for first few weeks. I would love to get into hydro and utilize all the equipment I've procured but I've got black thumbs and am hoping can set this in right direction! Look forward to hearing from you guys/girls. I see all the photos of grows and it seems so impossible. But it's just a plant so I am so confused as to why it's not working out.
Hey there, what is your water ph? Are there any nutrients added to your soil or is it enhanced by any way? Might be ph problems or burn? The yellowing seems to start at the inside and works it’s way out, I usually has isssues with the outter leaves burning a bit from a bit too much nutes or improper ph.
If it were me, I'd try and duplicate what has worked for others; a commonly used soil, commonly used light distance, commonly used nute package. No need to re-invent the wheel. I wanted to dial everything back and get to basics. ***Good I germinated a gorilla cookie seed 15 days ago in a peat pellet starter I have a 48"x48"x72" grow tent Mars Hydro 300W LED light 18/6, 36 inches away ***Good Small fan indirectly moving air around ***Good. Temp is mid 70's 24/7 ***Good. Humidity around 55% ***That's low for a seedling; higher would be better. Just straight tap water <200 ppm ***Not sure what's in the soil you are using but that shouldn't be a disaster. Charcoal filter and in-line fan for exhaust ***No need for an exhaust fan at the moment is there? That will really keep things dry. Seedling emerged after 4-5 days, put CFL few inches above right away. ***Why are you using a CFL when you have the LED? ~5 days later, placed starter in flower cup (holes in bottom) with Vigoro normal potting soil surrounding it, swapped to LED light ***What's "Vigoro"? About a week later the growth has all but stopped with emergence of second set of leaves New growth is much more yellow, and leaves are twisted. ***Take a picture in non-purple light As the other commenter asked...what's your PH like?
Last attempted grow was hydro where I had similar yellowing from new growth on center as well. I checked ph 2x a day and kept it within 5.8-6.2. My tap water is 7.0-7.1, I have a calibrated ph meter and multiple brands of manual test strips. Nothing but 3 room temp tap waterings, one at planting, two a week in, and a third tonight.
this looks/sounds like 'over watering', same with your hydro, 'over watering' is a gardening term used before hydro was invented, it is actually oxygen deprivation at the root zone, your current plant probably has 'wet feet', when u water gravity pulls it down to the bottom of the pot, the top dries quickly due to evaporation, but the bottom is staying pretty wet, this causes funky deficiencies in weird places because the top roots r getting O2, but the bottom is suffocating, try flood to drought watering, saturate the pots, wait for them to get almost dry then saturate again, either judge this by weight, when the pot feels empty it is time to water, or use a moisture meter, test the bottom of the pot where the roots grow, wait until it reads down in the 'moist' area close to or touching the 'dry' reading, saturate and wait again, this promotes healthy roots and 'soil'.!! what hydro method did u try.? did it have plenty of oxygenation in the nutrient solution.?
I did a DWC, 2 stones both running from 2 outputs from a 4 port air pump. Had my the bottom of my net pots 1" above water with splashes hitting the rocks and keeping them soaked. Did this in 2 separate buckets, both failed after 2 month ridiculously stunted growth etc. Washed clay stones and let soak in 5.5 ph water bubbling. Got 3-4 long very thin hairs about 12" on each plant, that was it. Google Vigoro potting mix (non-fertilizer), it's a HD version of Scotts brand. The soil is very loose around the cube as well, it was quite dry as I have constant air flow in tent, 6" fan on low.
Exhaust fan isn't on, in the past i'd run it low just to bring in fresh air (overkill I agree but when you've ruled out 100 other things you get crazy ) CFL I've read is easier in beginning due to LED lights having a wider range of what's too much/not enough. CFL I stuck right above because it can't be wrong. Click the picture, there are 5 uploaded, post gave me trouble on linking.
maybe this will help.... she looks either P toxic or Zinc deficient according to this chart......????? does your 'soil' have slow release fert's in it.? if your 'soil' does not have any, u need to add fert's at 1/4 strength, but only when it is nearly dry.!!!!! seriously, get a moisture meter from a store, not Amazon they been shipping bad meters, this one was $12 about 20 yrs ago and it is still running on the original battery.!
Man my guess is ur water has something in it. I would bake it in jugs for a day or so outside. My water is 7.2 and ppm is 500. So this is a city tap water or a well? If u were still in soil I would say do a slurry test. That would tell u if ur plants were eating and a true reading in pH in it soil. Too many people in here that have not done there homework still get successful grows. I would ask hydro store in ur area if they have any local water knowledge. Other thing I see is when guys use off brand mediums u never know what ur getting. I use fox happy frog and used ffof for years. Now I use frog 30% perlite. Mykos when I plant. 7 gal Fab pots. Nextar nutes Mammoth p and I now feel like I am growing great stuff. I think Coco loco is a good medium. Seems like guys do well with that. Maybe see if soil2coco will give u advise he is awesome with all the mediums Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk
I had a guy send me a water report the other day. I was like damn this is cool. Wish I knew how to read it lol. Maybe just call water company and ask them, I am growing my own veggies and wondering if there is something in the water not conducive to farming? Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk
I bought a bag of fox farm growing soil and root rooters to germinate a second seed last night. I swapped out the existing cups dirt with the new stuff as well. I was going to go 3-4 weeks with out nutrients to keep simple but at 3 week mark ill do 1/4 strength from gh flora trio. Looking into water from town and may look to obtain water from a be source. It's town water, we live in suburbs. As far as anything outside and boiling water it's a bit too cold and snowy in these parts. Will post progress pictures in a few days, hoping I didn't stress the seedling too much. I appreciate everyone's insight!
Try storing your water in open jugs for a few days. In your room it may help your rh% and let it gas off any chlorine. Sent from my LGL82VL using Grasscity Forum mobile app
Thanks Jon . Unfortunately I've tried leaving water open for days to vent as well as get to same temp when I did dwc to lessen the shock of weekly water changes, fort months I saw no change.
