band forming tips?

Discussion in 'The Musician in U' started by greenghoul, Sep 12, 2012.

  1. Hey everyone, so I've been wanting to form a band but I don't know anyone that plays an instrument or likes my music taste.

I've been trying to write songs and I'm very influenced by dinosaur jr, the cure, sonic youth, smashing pumpkins and the pixies. It shows a lot in my music.

    Anyway...any tips will be helpful

    Thanks!

Go to a skatepark or hit up your local venues around town. What city are you in?

  3. Go where people rehearse and put up an add or play some nights and see if you can meet people. People are always looking to join bands on Craigslist

Just getting yourself out there means that you meet people involved.

  4. I'm in the Rochester Hills/Troy/Royal Oak area, but I don't know where venues are or where people go to rehearse.

Would it be best to just post ads in guitar shops? There's one right next to my campus and another in the next town over. If I do that, what should I put in the ad? Just "looking for bassists, drummers, guitarists that are interested in forming a band, and are influenced by...."?

  5. Maybe instead of looking for musicians to join you, look for musicians that you can join. If u dont know anyone who fits your needs maybe try out for someone elses band to atleast have some experience because many people dont want to start somethingnew with someone who hasnt got any prior exp. (Assuming u dont)

  6. Check craigslist... It's actually really helpful. People could be looking for you.

  7. To be honest, I've never tried that, but it's got to be worth a shot. Just say you're looking to start a band and that your influences are sonic youth and the cure. I'd join a band to play stuff like that. No harm done if no one gets in touch. When I used to be in a band, i used to see a lot of them about. i don't know if they were any good.

If you can record yourself and set up a soundcloud account, that'll probably help. Just use your computer or laptop or phone. Lo fi sounds good.
