One of two men who allegedly tried to smuggle hundreds of pounds of marijuana into the United States in a pair of stolen vehicles was arrested near Yuma Monday, while the other eluded capture, the U.S. Border Patrol said.

Agents, however, seized approximately 1,300 pounds of marijuana in the chase.

Joe Brigman, spokesman for the Border Patrol's Yuma sector, said agents observed two identical late-model Chevy Tahoe sport utility vehicles crossing illegally into the United States at County 17th Street and the Colorado River levee.

As agents went to intercept the vehicles, the driver of one vehicle abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, Brigman said. Agents found 706 pounds of marijuana in that stolen vehicle, he said.

The driver of the other stolen vehicle mixed in with traffic going north along U.S. Highway 95 and was later caught in a parking lot of a grocery store in Yuma afterward, Brigman said.

The driver, a Hispanic male, was arrested and agents seized 597 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle, Brigman said.

Before the chase, agents also seized 325 pounds of bundled marijuana found floating along the northern portion of the Colorado River near Yuma, Brigman said.

A citizen notified authorities about the floating bundles, Brigman said.

Both investigations have been turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency, he said.
