Auto Water?

  1. I'm leaving town next week and I'll be gone for 6 days. I've got several small plants in 3 gallon pots and two seedlings in 16 oz party cups. The only person that knows I'm growing, other than all of you, is my brother and I'm leaving town to visit him. I don't want ANYONE to know that I'm growing for obvious reasons. How can I water these while I'm gone. I've read that you can water potted plants from the bottom up and thought that might work. Maybe I could saturate the soil w/ water and put the pots in a big container with an inch or two of water and just let the plants drink as needed. Would this work? is there a better way?

    Thanks

  2. letting plants "drink" water from the bottom is a bad idea, it will most likely cause root rot... only thing i can think of is setting up a drip system but i dont know much about them

  3. Search Google for Wick watering, it may work for you, and you can probably find everything you need in your house.
Or water them good and cover the soil with something to keep the moisture in. May not be too good for the roots like this though (but it's only 6 days).

  4. buy a cheap timer, rig it up with an air pump connected to a bucket, (for example you know those pumps they have in basements of houses that pump out water outside to avoid flooding, well they have smaller scale ones)

  5. I would buy a cheap submersible pump to put in 5 gal. bucket and run drip tubing with a drip emitter to each plant. Have the pump on a timer to turn on for 15min each day while you are gone. You dont want the bucket to run out of water and burn up your pump though. You also dont want water to build up in your reservoir pan. You need to do some testing before you leave.

How often do you water when you are home. Try to base it off of that.

  6. Dont over water your plants first of all, too often i mean leading up to your leaving, I also hope that you have plenty of drainage so that your plants don't continue to become sickened or get worse. If you cant afford to setup a drip as others have mentioned or a wick based system to feed them while you're gone as needed, then you'll simply have to water them well when you leave and hope they're alive when you come back. =\ good luck man
