1. A true revolution of values will lay hands on the world order and say of war: "This way of settling differences is not just." This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation's homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into veins of people normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.

martin luther king jr.

Don't let anybody make you think God chose America as his divine messianic force to be - a sort of policeman of the whole world. God has a way of standing before the nations with justice and it seems I can hear God saying to America "you are too arrogant, and if you don't change your ways, I will rise up and break the backbone of your power, and I will place it in the hands of a nation that doesn't even know my name. Be still and know that I'm God. Men will beat their swords into plowshafts and their spears into pruning hooks, and nations shall not rise up against nations, neither shall they study war anymore." I don't know about you, I ain't going to study war anymore."

i was just websurfing and came across a couple of flash presentations, and several used speeches of dr. kings.....i guess it was sort of an inspirational epiphany kind of thing....i just wanted to share it with you fellas....i smoked a fat one when i found this stuff..

4. Timebender bob loves you.

How fares your peices?:D

5. I didn't reply because you sent me into a pondering daze. ;)

6. i guess the thing that amazes me, is that dr. king is speaking about vietnam, and how true it holds for our present situation

it seems to me that this is the only thing our generation is missing, someone with fire and conviction, someone that can captivate thousands with spoken word....

i guess this grabbed my attention above all
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death."

also, the two above mentioned quotes arent from the same speech, but they were spliced together in that flash presentation and it seems to give it much more meaning....

7. Fuck that. This isnt Socialist America. I do disagree with alot of our military spending though. We have bases in countries that can defend themselves, bases that were there for the clod war and such. We have no bid contracts for jobs, which means a company can charge as much as they want, so we have the government paying $100 for a hammar.

"Military expenses are over $250 billion a year! A large percentage of this is spent overseas to defend wealthy countries like Germany and Japan -- who then wallop us in international trade. Let's take them off military welfare. We can defend America better and save at least $100 billion a year in taxes."

Its sad when America has to go in because the UN. the "world police body" per say, wont do anything, hell they have been currupted by saddam. It's even sadder this could have been avoided had the UN let us finish.

The US is the world police almost by force. The UN is letting Genocide happen right under their noses in Africa, along with other humanitarian crisis around the globe.

As for social uplift, the only social spending i like is education spending. Id rather have nicer roads paid for with my money than giving someone with no desire to look for a job a reward for doing just that, nothing. The government isnt responsible for your well-being, that is your job.

8. From across the political and ideological spectrum, there is now almost universal acknowledgement that the American social welfare system has been a failure.

Since the start of the "war on poverty" in 1965, the United States has spent more than $5 trillion trying to ease the plight of the poor. What we have received for this massive investment is -- primarily -- more poverty.

Our welfare system is unfair to everyone: to taxpayers who must pick up the bill for failed programs; to society, whose mediating institutions of community, church and family are increasingly pushed aside; and most of all to the poor themselves, who are trapped in a system that destroys opportunity for themselves and hope for their children.

The Libertarian Party believes it is time for a new approach to fighting poverty. It is a program based on opportunity, work, and individual responsibility.

1. End Welfare

None of the proposals currently being advanced by either conservatives or liberals is likely to fix the fundamental problems with our welfare system. Current proposals for welfare reform, including block grants, job training, and "workfare" represent mere tinkering with a failed system.

It is time to recognize that welfare cannot be reformed: it should be ended.

We should eliminate the entire social welfare system. This includes eliminating AFDC, food stamps, subsidized housing, and all the rest. Individuals who are unable to fully support themselves and their families through the job market must, once again, learn to rely on supportive family, church, community, or private charity to bridge the gap.

2. Establish a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for contributions to private charity

If the federal government's attempt at charity has been a dismal failure, private efforts have been much more successful. America is the most generous nation on earth. We already contribute more than $125 billion annually to charity. However, as we phase out inefficient government welfare, private charities must be able to step up and fill the void.

To help facilitate this transfer of responsibility from government welfare to private charity, the federal government should offer a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for contributions to private charities that provide social-welfare services. That is to say, if an individual gives a dollar to charity, he should be able to reduce his tax liability by a dollar.

3. Tear down barriers to entrepreneurism and economic growth

Almost everyone agrees that a job is better than any welfare program. Yet for years this country has pursued tax and regulatory policies that seem perversely designed to discourage economic growth and reduce entrepreneurial opportunities. Someone starting a business today needs a battery of lawyers just to comply with the myriad of government regulations from a virtual alphabet soup of government agencies: OSHA, EPA, FTC, CPSC, etc. Zoning and occupational licensing laws are particularly damaging to the type of small businesses that may help people work their way out of poverty.

In addition, government regulations such as minimum wage laws and mandated benefits drive up the cost of employing additional workers. We call for the repeal of government regulations and taxes that are steadily cutting the bottom rungs off the economic ladder.

4. Reform education

There can be no serious attempt to solve the problem of poverty in America without addressing our failed government-run school system. Nearly forty years after Brown vs. Board of Education, America's schools are becoming increasingly segregated, not on the basis of race, but on income. Wealthy and middle class parents are able to send their children to private schools, or at least move to a district with better public schools. Poor families are trapped -- forced to send their children to a public school system that fails to educate.

It is time to break up the public education monopoly and give all parents the right to decide what school their children will attend. It is essential to restore choice and the discipline of the marketplace to education. Only a free market in education will provide the improvement in education necessary to enable millions of Americans to escape poverty.

Summary

We should not pretend that reforming our welfare system will be easy or painless. In particular it will be difficult for those people who currently use welfare the way it was intended -- as a temporary support mechanism during hard times. However, these people remain on welfare for short periods of time. A compassionate society will find other ways to help people who need temporary assistance. But our current government-run welfare system is costly to taxpayers and cruel to the children born into a cycle of welfare dependency and hopelessness.

The Libertarian Party offers a positive alternative to the failed welfare state. We offer a vision of a society based on work, individual responsibility, and private charity. It is a society based on opportunity and genuine compassion It is a society built on liberty.

9. blame the bush administration.

10. For the jihad declared in 1995, under Clinton, or the decision for a regime change in Iraq, which was decided in 1998, by again Bill Clinton????????

No my misguided friend, i would blame Clinton for letting both current problems fester. Dealing with them, like a LEADER, might have hurt his popularity, and after all, Clinton was a Poll drivin president.

http://forum.grasscity.com/showthread.php?t=53931 read and learn.

11. Im fighting propaganda with propaganda, and yes, i would like nothing more than to end welfare.

I have stated many times here, baring DISALILITY OR HEALTH PROBLEMS, there is no reason someone should be out of work for an extended period of time.

What i listed is a pure libertarian view, and nothing in this country is pure anything.

Im tired of seeing obease people getting their scooters paid for by taxes when all they need to do is exercise and take the doughnut out of their mouth. Im tired of tax money being used to treat smokers with cancer, who didnt have the self respect to eather stop smoking or not to start. I am sick of tax money paying for the millions of deadbeats who abuse it, like you said.

How does welfare pay for education? There are many, many scholarships out there for anyone with the willingness to apply.

IT IS NOT THE GOVERNMENTS RESPONSIBLITY TO TAKE CARE OF YOU, IT IS YOURS.

Yes elroy, i think angencies that getin the way of starting a business is great! I think a bloated, oversized government is great.

I wasnt aware that using our workers to pay for lazy people was a beacon of light for out country. I was taught the beacon was the chance to come here and make something of yourself, capitolaism, free-market, the american dream. The American Dream isnt robbing your fellow man of his money to support you. Personal responsiblity is something it seems alot of people dont like.

If you chose to be lazy, not work, not go to school, then please tell me what gives the govt the right to ROB us hardworking Americans of our money to support them????

This is how i see it:
Lets say were walking down the road and we see a homeless man, its ok for me to give him money or refuse to do so, right?

Now, is it right for you to take a gun and put it to my head and demand i give him money?

Thats what the government is doing, it is holding the gun so you dont have to, now is that right? Fuck No it isnt right.

Charities, private organizations, churches, family, could all fill the gap, could help the people who REALLY NEED THE HELP.

12. well...it wasnt really supposed to be about wellfare...but whatever...

i do believe that america is a nation on the path to spiritual death...

whats your opinion of bushs' plans to cut veterans benefits?

13. Elroy, I dont think every government program should be cut. It was a quick copy and paste propaganda stressing my beliefs. I do think we should cut the size of our government, but i know we cant realisticly cut every program or organization. I do however strongly support DRASTIC REFORM and cutting of alot of walfare programs. I think they control too much and put up too many barriers to different aspects of life. Anything the government does can be done better in the provate sector. Alot of policies and organizations but a great strain on small business, which account for A LOT of jobs in this country.

Could you tell me how Bush is hurting old people?

I dont like it (vet benifit cuts)at all. I didnt vote for George Bush, i only support some of his policies. I voted for Micheal Bednarik. But, like i said earier, i support cuttinf defense spending. If we would shrink the size of the govt some, cut proven failed programs, cut defense spending (not needed bases, $100 hammers) we wouldnt have to cut programs like benifits for vets. Dont get the idea im a bush supporter, i favor him drasticly over Kerry, but i didnt vote for him and i wont defend him on things i dont like.

In a 2 party system, i favor the right over the left. Its a shame i have to pick from 2 puppets.

What are your views of his social security proposal?

14. honestly, not familiar with it, i missed the state of the union

i dont favor the investment idea though.

15. Why not?

The system is headed towards failure. The method he wants to put in place is similar to the ones offered to federal employees. I do think he wont pass it trying to pull 4%, he might get 2.5-3% if he can do it, but i really think it is a good system. It is not forced eather, you can choose if you want in.

I think it is Chili that has had a similar system in place for a while, they saw the disaster commiing and their porgram is a major success.

16. Gilligan, you said that barring health or physical disability, no one should be out of a job, correct? What do you mean by job? Must there be a pay-check?

I sincerely hope that you don't consider me a bum, or lazy, since my job (being a mother) doesn't pay anything.

17. i think so you know that this isd a very good point that you make

18. Well, i dont want to get into your personal life but i wil say this.

Noone should bring a child into this world they can not support. Eather by the mother working or the father working so the mother does not have to. If someone is on welfare, they have no business having children. It all goes back to personal responsiblity. If someone engages in the act of sex and gets pregnant, there are consiquences for that. Noone forced the mother to have sex and she knew the consiquences.

You will find most single mothers with children that are on welfare do not have higher levels of education or the tools it takes to make it in todays job market.

I personally am waiting until i graduate college in the winter to get married. I know i cant afford it, i know i cant afford a kid eather, so i am responsible enough to wait until i can.

Being a mother is a tough job though, really tough.

19. republicans will slaughter thousands of innocent people for money and oil
democrats are sittin in the corner with there thumbs up their asses
i will vote for anyone who will legalize or at least decriminalize weed

this is grasscity, shouldn't we be talking about grass?

i'm not talking about all republicans, just the ones that run the country. many (not all) republican voters are just being brainwashed by engineered ads, bush's fake down-home charisma, and ignorance

on this forum, i didn't think anyone would get pissed off if someone dissed bush. aren't we supposed to be the counter culture?
