  2. Event Will Honor Montel Williams, U.S. Rep. Sam Farr;
    Supreme Court Plaintiff Angel Raich to Appear

    WASHINGTON, D.C.-Tickets are now on sale for the Marijuana Policy Project's (MPP's) 10th anniversary galas in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. At the May 4 Washington event, MPP, America's largest marijuana policy reform organization, will honor television talk show host Montel Williams and U.S. Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA). Angel Raich, lead plaintiff in the medical marijuana case now before the U.S. Supreme Court, will also appear.

    Tickets for the Washington gala, at the Washington Court Hotel on Capitol Hill, can be purchased online at http://www.mpp.org/galas or by calling 202-462-5747, ext. 122.

    Rep. Farr will be honored for spearheading efforts in Congress to end U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration attacks on medical marijuana patients and caregivers. Williams, who uses medical marijuana to treat the symptoms of multiple sclerosis, will receive an award for his energetic advocacy on behalf of his fellow patients on his television show, in personal visits to Capitol Hill and the New York Legislature, and in a Feb. 14 column in the Chicago Tribune. Raich and co-plaintiff Diane Monson have been voted Activists of the Year by MPP's membership. A decision in their case is expected sometime this spring.

    A distinguished host committee is helping MPP present the Washington gala and a companion event in Los Angeles on May 9. Members of the host committee include actress Susan Sarandon; best-selling author Tom Robbins; U.S. Representatives George Miller (D-CA), John Conyers (D-MI), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) and Barbara Lee (D-CA); and former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders, along with many other distinguished hosts. Montel Williams is honorary chair of the L.A. gala.

    MPP's recent achievements include leading the successful campaigns that enacted medical marijuana laws in Montana and Vermont in 2004, and providing key funding that allowed Raich and Monson to pursue their litigation to the Supreme Court. MPP is currently leading a campaign to establish a system of marijuana regulation in Nevada.

    With more than 17,000 members and 150,000 e-mail subscribers nationwide, the Marijuana Policy Project is the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States. MPP works to minimize the harm associated with marijuana-both the consumption of marijuana and the laws that are intended to prohibit such use. MPP believes that the greatest harm associated with marijuana is imprisonment. For more information, please visit MarijuanaPolicy.org.
