Atheists for Jesus

Discussion in 'Religion, Beliefs and Spirituality' started by CH3VELLE, Aug 18, 2007.

  1. i just recently came upon this website not too long ago:

    http://www.atheists-for-jesus.com/
"For many years, the stated purpose of this site has been to promote a dialog between religious and non-religious people who share a common vision of Jesus as an individual of tremendous compassion; a true advocate of "Peace on Earth"; and a staunch supporter of the poor and suffering people who are all too often ignored by prosperous societies. While this remains a major goal, the recent "re"-election of George W. Bush--with the help of the so-called "Religious Right"--has caused me to narrow the focus of my efforts. It is my honest opinion that the direction of the country under "W" is not only bad for us as a nation, but also runs contrary to the life and teachings of Jesus."

what are your thoughts about the overall message behind this website? why arent there more people who admire Jesus for who he was as a person, and not who he claimed to be?

    discuss

  2. For the same reason I don't admire the unicorn for it's noble life of solitude.

  3. yea I can't speak for anyone else here but I don't think he even existed

  4. Jesus Christ's existence has been proven.

There is also other physical evidence of Jesus... the headboard that was placed above him on the cross. It has been protected by Catholics for centuries, and it was recently examined by forensic scientists. They have concluded, through carbon-dating, that it is the real thing. It daters back to the time when he was cruxified. Also, the writing on it has been studied historians and cryptologists. They have concluded that it is accurate with the way things were written in the 1st century a.d.

  5. The Christian moral values, and teachings of Jesus; Where appropriate, are good for social behaviors as a whole. But, there a dogmatic following of all religions, create an "Us and Them" set of mind causing much the of problems.

If you where to say, quote a line, and leave it anonymous and still open for interpretation, then i could see myself working with Christian's dialect. But for now, this is one atheist that can live without the shepherd.

  6. Not a good call. It's like denying that Julius Caesar existed. There have been historical writings confirming his existence AND crucifixion by Josephus, Plenny the Younger, Nero, and more.

  7. I don't see how you can be an atheist and still follow Jesus's teachings. It's like, Jesus found the Catholic church with Peter, and he says it's the only Church that people must follow, and yet there are many other churches (methodist, protestant, baptist, etc.) that still claim to be christian establishments.

  8. Deep sigh. Religious people suck.
Don't you get it? Jesus teachings were more about morality and living a moral life than about the dogmatic crap that the Vatican spews out on a regular basis. Just treat everyone how you would want everyone to treat you and you're all good. Leave the god ideas at home and just be a kind person to others.

Also Jesus didn't found the Catholic church, Peter did. Silly arrogant Catholics.

  9. No offense to any Christian sect. but the Catholic Church is not even close to what the book of Acts teaches, which is the time the church was established. Read up on that man.

Also it's funny someone mentioned "us and them." That is quite the generalization and you act like Christians are the only ones who do it. There are tons of Atheist who do the same thing. They look at church goers as unintellectual bible thumpers. What I don't get is why can't we all just love one another not according to beliefs. Yes I am a Christian but I have no problem with my fellow Atheist brother. Hell, I am even willing to defend your right to believe what you want and say what you want. My religion teaches love for all people, and honestly it should be that way anyway. So why can't the two opposing ideas exist in harmony? Why does there have to be so much distaste and hate? I think I am a pretty open Christian and I would like to think that the Atheists of this message board don't disrespect my views and generalize me just like I do the same to you.

    Lets just love man...

  10. Let me just say this. Everyone stop and think for a moment.

What did Jesus teach, that was so profound, so mind-bogglingly obvious, that we still revere him to this day?

I don't know about you, but everything he "taught" became self-apparent to me at a young age, after living in a society that understands his "teaching" already. It's part of our evolution.

So I ask, again....why the fuck even mention Jesus anymore?

We DO NOT get out morals from the Bible. It's an insult to think that we need ancient literature to understand things that are incredibly fucking obvious.

  11. I have just one moral guide, me. It is quite sufficient, not saying perfect, but I have yet to get into any real trouble so it must be working.

I'll even contend that most, if not all, religious as not, basically follow their own sense of right and wrong. Part instinctual, part enviromental.

Nothing wrong with role-models as such, even jesus if that is your cup of tea. Me I prefer actual real role models, not a fictional supernatural character.

And as far as fictional supernatural characters go, jesus is in no way unique. Not in the narrative which is a synthesis of former messianic figures from other religions. And certainly not in moral message, which is just human traits made explicit.

Man made god in his image, not the other way around :)

  12. I agree with this gentleman. If he were wrong, then all Atheists would be enemies of society. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Live out your life being a good person to others as well as yourself. I do this, and if I am destined to burn in hell for eternity for not believing in a man called Christ as my only means of salvation, then God is a horrible being.

As far as philosophy goes, God is being horrible to Judas Iscariot, who is suffering more than Jesus did.

Nobody really needs Jesus in their life, but thats just my opinion.

  13. I'd go as far to say people that "have Jesus in their life" are putting a severe temptation in their life as well. A temptation to be arrogant and an excuse to be an intolerant racist and bigot.

  14. No, it is not like that at all. There are many sources to show that Caesar lived, not so many to show that Jesus did, and for someone who could raise the dead, and heal the sick, that is pretty odd to say the least.

The Existence of Jesus the Christ:

I do not know if Jesus' existed (I think it highly unlikely and improbable for the Jesus of the Bible to have existed though), but I would not go and state it as certainty. I would like to see these historical documents that prove his existence, if anyone wants to link me to something, It would be appreciated.

  15. Duh he never preformed miracles and stupid bullshit like that, but I do believe a man named Jesus went around telling people love each other and he probably even *thought* he was god, or at least told everyone he was. They believed him and after he was crucified (a very common punishment in the Roman Empire) and 40 years past they decided to start making shit up.
    I'll look for some documents.

  16. I may be falsely accusing Christians of hypocrisy, but this is the same carbon dating used to date the bones of the dinosaurs...

This make sense to anyone? I'm too sleepy to elaborate.

  17. I don't like religion any higher than on an individual level.

Once you start to group together, someone rises to power and therein lies the problem with so many things in the world.

That being said, I, myself, am an atheist. I think believing in a god is as foolish as believing in magic, or Santa. You; however, are free to think whatever you want.

  18. Again. Even if he did exist, he was teaching people shit they already knew. Civilization wouldn't have gotten to where it was if they didn't understand the "Golden Rule" and all that already.

Think about the parable of the Good Samaritan. Here's a guy who could not have known who Jesus was, yet still found it within himself to help a fellow man.

And, if that story was merely nothing more than a parable, then clearly Jesus was "teaching" people shit they already understood. There had to be a level of cooperation and respect for fellow man or they wouldn't have gotten to where they were.

  19. They only claim carbon dating is legit when it's convenient. That's how religion works!

Hmm....I'm not so sure they did. Well some did but a clear majority didn't IMO. Just look at their soceity. Clearly extremely sexist towards males (although it appears Jesus didn't get the whole sexism issue either) and most governments were ruled by a single ruler with infallible power. There were slaves and racism was obviously rampant....Although you take a look at today's world and wonder how far we've really come. Heh.

Haha it's a parable. Did it happen or not? Who knows? But the character is a Samaritan for a reason. Samaritans were despised by other Jews. Why do you think they always attach the adjective "Good" to it? Those people though Samaritans could never be good! But Jesus chose to say it was a Samaritan to tell people to drop the racism bullshit. It doesn't matter where you're from, we're all the same species. That's the point.

Again, they obviously didn't understand if they had a predilection to assume that no Samaritan could do good.

  20. I think I heard about this...but, I'm pretty sure they DIDN'T let them carbon date it. Why? They didn't want to quantify their faith. The mystery is a big part of their religion.

    Could be wrong, though.

Edit: well, according to this thing, the London Times reported this in 2000:
