Published in JAMA Psychiatry, Feb 13 2019 here (linked). Key Points Question Is adolescent cannabis consumption associated with risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidality in young adulthood? Findings In this systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 studies and 23 317 individuals, adolescent cannabis consumption was associated with increased risk of developing depression and suicidal behavior later in life, even in the absence of a premorbid condition. There was no association with anxiety. Meaning Preadolescents and adolescents should avoid using cannabis as use is associated with a significant increased risk of developing depression or suicidality in young adulthood; these findings should inform public health policy and governments to apply preventive strategies to reduce the use of cannabis among youth. Bit of a rough finding; could have cherry picked? idk. Rest of it linked above.
I doubt they could find enough adolescents that were NOT already on a Psychiatry prescribed medication to run a valid test. Sure it is. I think there is an Israeli study along the same lines with very different results. Then the next question is who funded the JAMA study BNW
*This research was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Quebec Network on Suicide, Mood Disorders and Related Disorders. That being said, the lead author is an assistant professor trying to get published. Its also a meta-analysis review, and I would ask what the criteria for accepting older material was.
