Are we wrong about the cannabis sub-species?

Discussion in 'Cannabis Consumption Q&A & Tips' started by pixeledm, Apr 1, 2016.

  1. Firstly sorry if this isn't the correct place for this thread or if it has already been posted before.

So I stumbled upon an article claiming that Cannabis indica, Cannabis sativa and Cannabis ruderalis are in fact not the 3 sub-species of cannabis but instead Indica (formerly Sativa), Afghanica (formerly Indica) and Sativa (formerly Ruderalis).

Here's a link to the article: Indica, Sativa, Ruderalis - Did We Get It All Wrong?

Is there any evidence to support this? Have you guys seen this before and if so what do you think of it?

  2. Never seen it before. Highly skeptic its true. Like the fuck? (directed to article) We switched indicia and sativa around? That just sounds silly. Indicia is sativa and sativa is indicia? We (people as a whole collective not just usa) gave them those names, there cant be some other pre-1970names unless it was documented years, maybe even hundreds of years ago. Its more of a label than a literal exact name IMO. For all i know in the 60s it was different. I wasnt there say i cant say.... True or not i dont think it would change because theres already so much with names and breds or whatever, it would just mix and become some messy thing over just the name. Not worth it. I could be wrong.

    Just my two cents

  3. That's very true it would become incredibly confusing hence why it'll never become widely used and the article states that "C. sativa should have been identified as C. indica" but gives no reason as to why. It says the binomial names for the cannabis sub-species were created in the 1970s but I'm sure it would have been different in the 60s etc. I'm not entirely sure on the subject but I think it stems from when Sativa and Indica were originally classed as 2 separate species but in the 70s it was proven that cannabis was a single species with separate sub-species and it is these sub-species that should have the names stated in the article. As you said, never going to catch on but an interesting read nonetheless.
