Are these Chinese led scam ?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by Murdoch docha, Jul 22, 2020.

  1. Hello everyone, although I’m new on the forum I’ve been lurking on it for many years, but just recently created an account because I finally decided to quit stalling and grow my weed, seeing that where I live only Paraguayan brickweed is the only thing available I thought that growing it from the seeds you get amidst the brick is my best hope. Anyways, the economic situation where I live is dire and the access to growing equipment is really hard because they’re mainly imported, but I’ve came across there cheap Full spectrum LED lights that claim to be 60w

I think they’re too good to be true, I would really appreciate the opinion of someone experienced on this matter. I have a small setup 50cmx50cmx1m I plan to grow 1 or maybe 2 plants. Anyways what you guys think would yield better harvest; These cheap FS LED, Regular65k house Led, or plain cfls ? Those are pretty much my only options.
I thank you guys in advance for the attention.

  2. Hello man , from my knowledge and experience ( but i am not a pro and probably an OG will answer better )
Autos need light , the more light they have the bigger they get and the heavier the Yeild will be ,

if you live in a sunny place , you can put them outside to direct sun and before sunest , bring them in under CFL at least 200w , you wont have the best result but you dont know how the genetics will work , i had 1000w led panel and my previous plants got stunt they end up beeing very small with small flowers , most important is the soil and the mix with nutes , will you use natrual compost , or bone meal and Fish blood combo , or you will go with nutes as Advanced Nutriments brand or similar , soil have to be mixed with Perlite , some do 30% perlite 70% soil , some do 50/50 , not over watering its a key so the roots wont be damaged ,

all those have to be take in consideration , i hope my experience will come in handy to you , waiting for someone with more knowledge will answer you

  3. Thanks for the help man.
As for sunny I can get 4hours of direct sunlight here I live, is that good?
Also any ideias on why you plant stunted with such a powerful light ?

  6. 4hrs of direct sunlight is no enough. They need at least 12 hrs a day if you want to veg them for a while.

  7. Most anything made in China is junk anyway. Buy American.

  8. 4 hours of direct sunlight is better then nothing , they need 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark
so you can compensate and go for CFL light its better then those cheap Leds they dont do anything TBH ,

they got stunted because of high humidity , it was more then 70% and it reached 100% sometimes , leak of ventilation and dense soil cause i didt mix it with Perlite

  9. I’m going to recommend a CMH 315. This light is generally ideal for flower only but it will get the job done with reasonable cost and efficacy. A big bonus of the light is the footprint. It spreads out quite wide compared to LEDs so you will get more coverage for more plants this way. 4 hrs of outdoor light is just insufficient. Those china bulbs are garbage. You would probably get the same results with your standard fluorescent bulb at your local hardware store. You can probably look into COBs but I don’t find them to be cheap for what they are. Just my opinion and ways to bring costs down.

  14. Short answer, yes it is a scam the true watts from the wall is usally maybe a quarter of claimed watts. I bought cheap knockoffs too my very first grow then started researching so upgraded. My cheap one said :)600w") and was like 60 something true wstts.

  15. I now have the mars ts600 and ts1000 and so fsr love em. This is mostly i bug girl. Did lots on training. Onlg 2 weeks if flower currently. Lights are one of the most important if ur wsnting actual dense tight packed fattys

  17. They aren't technically a scam, but rather marketing designed to sell to people who don't understand now Light Emitting Diodes function or are used.

LED chips have forward voltage and amperage ratings, this gives them a wattage rating for the maximum they are designed to handle.

Many companies will take this wattage rating of a single diode, multiply it by how many they have, and then list their fixture as such. For example: a light fixture that uses 100x 3w diodes will be listed at 300w under this marketing structure. Accurate? Technically yes... however running an LED at it's max wattage is very inefficient as you get a much higher heat/light ratio and will burn them out fairly fast. In order to avoid said negative effects, LED's are driven at a much lower wattage then they are rated for, the lower the wattage they are driven at the more efficient they are in the use of electricity, the lower heat they produce, and the longer they last.

LED fixtures will usually run a wattage of 1/3 to 1/2 of the rating of the individual LED's in order to be more efficient. Thus a "300w" fixture made up of 100x 3w chips is usually run below 150w, sometimes very much lower.

When it comes to cheaper LED fixtures you have to look at the actual wattage, "at the wall" wattage, wattage/amperage draw of the power supply, etc.

To truly compare LED's and really lights at all PPFD readings at practical distances are the best way to decide how they compare and if they are going to be adequate for your needs.

So back to the original lights in question, it appears that it uses 60x Epistar 2835 chips which have a maximum rating of 2.2w each. So could it actually be a 60w light? Yes, but without more information on it I can't say for sure if it's truly 60w or not.

Cheap LED's, even regular household LED bulbs (With the plastic bulb part removed) can be used to grow if you use enough of them sure, same with CFL. The higher the actual wattage you use the more growth you will get in general. Quality horticulture lights will be better but we all gotta start somewhere.
