Apartment grow, help.

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by unsafebutton, Aug 14, 2008.

  1. In two months i will be moving into an apartment in a large city in Oregon. Im considering my options and thinking about doing a possible grow, once i get to know how the neighbors are and what not...but once i get that figured out and if they happen to be chill people..(which is likely based on the part of town its in) i was wondering about what options i have. This needs to be a stealth grow, i would like to know how much power could be used in a 2 bedrrom apartment. Im thinking that i might get one of the 1m squared tents, and use LED's since they take a lot less power, also the obvious 4-6 inch carbon filter. is there anything else i should be looking into...please let me know

  2. Apartments are fickle. My biggest concerns are the physical geometry of the apartment grow or any grow for that matter. Also management is an issue. When would they want to come inspect, spray for bugs, or show the unit... That can be a BIG issue in some situations. You should CASUALY ask about pest control and inspections. I also like to aks about fish tanks just to make them think you are into that kind of stuff, and to get the feel for things. A fish tank is prone to possible leaks and if they are concerned about that kind of issue, you should proceed with caution. Back to physical lay out of the grow space. A big item on your list of must haves in an apartments is a decent to large master closet. Another big question is where would you be able to exhaust hot air to? If its a town home or an area with an attic you could blow it into the attic, provided its not a common space attic or some high traffic area. Most condos and apartments have "Fire Walls" in between all the way to the roof look or ask for that. DOnt be afraid to ask to peek into the attic. If you get those issues solved then the rest is all about hard work and KEEPING YOUR MOUTH SHUT! Which leads me to my next recommendation ... Don't get chummy with the neighbors if your are moving into a new situation and you want to grow some dope. Keep it casual and dont make your pad the party zone or you will get busted. Second or higher floor grows are the safest and most secure grow. On the first floor of a house or apt it is conceivable that your grow might be exposed to many threats including infestation by natural bugs that travel on the ground that may stumble in and by the FEDS. Good luck!!

  3. PS.. SKIP THE LED'S, Get a 600W HPS and an Air cooled hood set up and you will do much better.

  4. Thanks for the help, i know what we will be on the second floor..so it sounds like that is a plus...ive done other grows before..., i just have never lived in an apartment before. On previous grows i used a 400 hps, but recently i came in to possesion of some UFO LED's and i think i may give them a try. What do you think about the grow tent? there is a HUGE closet its actually a walk in..and venting may also be an issue since cutting or damaging things prolly wouldnt look good i hav e never had to worry about smell before, but i was wondering if getting a 6in carbon filter and venting the smell through that, back into an empty bedroom if things would get out of hand, and while in on that subject, are there any particular strains ideal for an apartment...ive been checking into the diesel lowryders..but im not sure.

  5. The first decision you need to make is how much you want to grow. If it's just for your personal use and you think your needs will be met by just one plant, then things are a lot easier. Space and stealth issues are much easier to resolve and you may be able to do away with air filtration altogether.

On the other hand, if you're feeling the entrepreneurial spirit and have ambitions of supplying pounds of high quality homegrown to the local market at a handsome profit, then you really need to be looking at renting a house and not an apartment, and you need to be reading the stickies to find out what growing is all about.

  6. If it's a townhouse, he could grow pounds without renting a larger space.

I have never had a problem cutting a hole in the ceiling (so long as its into and attic space). Patching dry wall is a piece of cake. Only problem would be if its that shitty popcorn ceiling, but textured ceiling is so easy. They usually don't paint the ceiling they just cover it with putty and add some texture. This makes it easy to match the pattern and no painting means you can blend it in well.

Just cut the size hole you need in the dry wall. Mounting a fan onto dry wall is not recommended, so use a piece of 1/4" plywood to mount the fan on then anchor the wood to the dry wall (with dry wall anchors). Making sure the wood has a foot print large enough to provide stable support.

save the drywall plug to patch with later. To patch just use a paint stick epoxied on the back side of the plug . Then using putty again just place the plug into the hole and holding it in place by putting the paint stick to the surrounding wall. After its dry and strongly in place just putty up the voids around the plug.

  8. i've grown in my apartment, in a small closet in the 2nd bedroom. the only uncontrollable issue you might have is if the landlord needs to enter the apartment unexpectedly. my landlords are not legally allowed to enter the apartment without my written consent, so i have some control over it unless it's something serious like a fire alarm inspection (which occurs only once a year in the fall so i can plan ahead). otherwise, you can control everything else, like the smell easily with a carbon filter. get a feel for your landlord, and read your lease very carefully would be my recommendation. good luck.

ps- i grew white widow and jock horror strains in my small closet. once plant at a time under a 250w HPS with a 8 inch carbon filter.
