Anyone not get sick if they smoke routinely?

Discussion in 'Experienced Cannabis Enthusiasts' started by bigtee212, Jan 31, 2007.

  1. I dunno i used to always get a fairly bad cold in the winter when i didnt smoke too often, like 2 years ago. And its was pretty much every winter, id have to miss almost a full week of school. it sucked pretty much, and id just feel under the weather for like a whole month. but the last 2 winters, this one and the last, when ive been smoking almost everyday i havent gotten sick at all. like i feel really good. it could just be a coincidence but i dunno, anyone else have anything to say on this subject?

  2. Cant explain it but kind of the same with me... younger i used to get sick all the time.. didnt matter what time of year... but the last couple-few years (maybe 6 or so) I havent gotten sick , with the exception of maybe a lil cold everynow and then, but nothing even close to how i used to get.

  3. i rarely get sick, but i cant honestly say that its an attribute of chronic pot smoking. haha if you think about it, i used to fake being sick so i could chill at home and blaze more than i ever actually became ill

  4. I agree with Cali; there is no clinical reason why smoking anything would decrease your chances of respiratory or sinus type infections. If anything, it accelerates that risk.

I also get far far less colds than when I was younger.... but I also eat a lot better, now. Changes in homones, lifestyle, all sorts of things can affect it, and I think it's very unlikely that pot is the reason.

  5. Im glad weve got u around to help spread some logic! be lost without alot of ur posts. Your always so helpful and insightful on alot of dif things.

    +rep if i can.

  6. Thanks. Flattered

  7. I dont know, its a magical plant.

  8. I still get sick every winter, but before i started smoking if i went down i was out for a week, now, even with the flu, i'm only miserable for like 2 days, then i'm right as rain. could be all the stuff homegirl said, could have something to do with the ganj, i don't know. i've only gotten one upper respiratory infection since i started smoking, and that was during the 4 month stretch where if i was awake, i was stoned. man i wish i knew then what i know now, i'd be retired and loaded 6 years from now if i'd invested all that money instead of spending it on weed, especially if i would've been working during that time. i was spending about a hundred to 150 a week on buds.

  9. I'm +repping stneod. Not only because he was so ripped he spelled stoned wrong, but because his answer was so true.

  10. I agree. Doesn't stress increase your chances of getting a cold? Cause I guarantee that us stoners are less stressed than the sober folk.

  11. Marijuana (Delta-nine-THC) does have an `immunosuppressive effect.' It acts on certain cells in the liver, called macrophages, in much the same way that it acts on brain cells. Instead of stimulating the cells, though, it shuts them off. This effect is temporary (just like the `high') and goes away quickly; people who suffer from multiple sclerosis may actually find this effect useful in fighting the disease.

Recent research has also found that marijuana metabolites are left over in the lungs for up to seven months after the smoking has stopped. While they are there, the immune system of the lungs may be affected (but the macrophages do not get ``turned off'' like in the liver.) The effects of smoking itself are probably worse than the effects of the THC, and last just as long. All this said, doctors still have not decided whether marijuana users are at risk for colds or not. With the possible exception of bronchitis, there are no numbers which suggest that marijuana users catch more colds,

  12. ya thats all good, but they still cant decide if weed causes lung cancer or helps stops it, causes brain damage or helps alzheimers

i mean they actual quality 100% research on pot is long overdue. i was jsut throwing this observation out there and seeing what everyones got to say.

for me, ya it could be a number of factors., but it coincides with pot smoking.

  13. No; a cold is a virus. Stress can lower your immunity, and oput you at a greater infection risk, but it cannot cause viruses and things.

All the talk of immunosuppressive effects is irrelevant in this instance.

  14. I have a respiratory and sinus infection now..:( Was I smart enough to quit smoking for awhile..NO!

  15. Getting sick while smoking routinely has nothing to do with smoking. Something else is wrong. You might be smoking with people who are already sick. Habitual reefer smoking doesn't make you sick unless you a pussy.

  16. Smoking, in general, makes you more prone to major illness, and less prone to minor ones. Not just weed, but any smoke. Most colds are contacted through the respiratory system, whether it be through the nose, or, more likely, the mouth. What does smoke do? It kills. Everything. If you smoke a lot, chances are you are killing most of the minor cold virii and bacteria before they can multiply enough to spred.

  17. I don't agree here..Let me see some proof then maybe...:D Smoking anything more often is gonna give you a bigger chance of being sick..Ask your doctor..Tobacco,Marijuana doesn't matter...Will better your chances of getting something..

  18. That's a consideration, yes; obviously, if you share reefers etc you are at a greater infection risk, too.

  19. Well the more stressed you are the more prone you are to sickness, with all the tree i smoke im not often stressed or worried, and i really havent been sick at all for a year. And since i started smoking my yearly big cold hasnt happened again.

  20. im with tee on this one
i usually always get sick around winter time and its been very cold and snowing here occasionally which never happens in new mexico lol
and i havent gotten sick nor coughed (except when tokin my bong lol) and i am a consistent smoker as well
so as for weed preventing you from getting sick? maybe or im just staying healthy lol
