Any traditional blues fans?

  1. The blues are the heart of American music...I can never get enough of the old blues artists, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, John Hurt, Blind Blake and Blind Willie Johnson, Leadbelly...too many to list...

anybody else here listen to traditional blues? I'm not talkin about 'bb king' blues, I'm talking about true 'shit-life-sing-about-it-on-your-beat-up-acoustic-guitar-drunk-as-hell-on-moonshine' blues. The kinda music that you listen to that tears your soul out of your body and leaves you feeling major pity for the dude singing.

I recommend anybody who is high to listen to this piece sometime in the dark or with their eyes closed and tell me it isn't some of the most haunting music you ever heard. Hell you aint even gotta be high.

I heard this song one night when I was living in the woods over a 2 month course - everything was dark even when I opened my eyes, and this song gave me visions in my head that I can't even describe. It scared me, in all honesty, it tore my emotions straight out of my body and jerked my soul around like a rag doll. It really hits you hard when you're alone and in the dark, trust me.

  2. This song is about Jesus' Crucifixion by the way. If you listen to the way he plays the bottleneck, its unmatched. His vibrato is incredible, and he was also blind.

edit: didnt even see you listed him in your first post. i just got too excited seeing blind willie that i rushed to post a video too ;)

  4. ^^ dudes my favorite guitarist.

  5. Got to jam with an old Bluesman named "The Crawlin' Kingsnake while in louisiana. Was AMAZING to hear them ole' Boys pick them blues. Im the sax player/lead vocalist/frontman for a band called "The Mill Creek Blues Band" here in NorCal.

  6. Hell yes. I live in Memphis so I am a big ol' fan of traditional blues. :)

  7. Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Ry Cooder and BB are all great. Johnson in particular was amazing.

  8. I like Johnson but I started drifting away from his music when I started listening to Bukka White and many other slide guitarists and traditional pickers. Idk I guess i find his music too simple and generic for me, though it is great and his talent is undeniable as a guitarist. I hardly listen to him at all now. Same with Muddy, I like his music but I dont listen to it much.

    Anybody like Skip James?

Theres also a good guitar player by the name of Lonnie Johnson (who Robert claimed to be related to when he was truckin around playin gigs) who is also quite good.

  9. I love how mellow and calm he is

'well....' hahaha that man is one of the greatest. his style is so smooth.

  10. I am strictly a blues guitarist so I really appreciate and love what these guys did, but for me the old poor quality recordings make them unlistenable. But, I had heard that Blind Wille Johnson recording before and must say it is something special.

  11. I'm not a big traditional blues fan, but I do both respect and enjoy it. Lately I've been huge on Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

That being said, I've always had a soft spot for Son House.

  12. Nice, I play the blues on the guitar as well. Not strictly blues but thats the majority of what I play. I can sympathize with you there too, I had the shitty recording quality..imagine how good this music would be if it had the recording quality of today?

Shit would blow peoples minds haha

  14. 'Papa Mactell' is the shit haha.

  15. I love me some classic blues, but my favorite artists are definitely guys like, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters, BB King, Eric Johnson.

  16. He's not really that 'classical' but fuck man, I looooove Stevie.

  17. yo people count me to blues fans here ;)
i love traditional blues... although my favorites are Hendrix and Page

  18. Page like Jimmy Page?

I wouldnt consider him blues, I'd consider him...fuck I dont even know.

innovative/rock/blues/crazy doped up sloppy guitar playing that somehow sounds amazing (usually)

thats what I'd consider jimmy page lol. I used to be a HUGE Zeppelin fan but I dont listen to them much anymore (though I still love lots of their music).

Hendrix is good too, though I dont listen to him much either.

  19. I like most forms of music, though I admit I am not fond of the whiney kind of C-W [OK, Lucille left you with crops in the field and kids. Go pick up a bitch in a bar, marry her, make her take care of the damned kids and get your ass on the tractor and harvest the fucking fields. stop whining about it asshole] and some forms of rap. I grew up listening to many of the Folkways albums. This Harry Smith one is freaking amazing. And you really need to get [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Anthology-American-Music-Edited-Harry/dp/B000001DJU"]this one[/ame] too.

  20. wouldn't consider jimmy page blues?
