My and a friend of mine (who is a guitar player and trumpeter) are considering starting a little jazz band to play at local bars and such. So I was wondering if anyone here had experience or advice to share, btw yes we are two young white men xD
ive played in my share of jazz quartets, trios nd shit like that idk about where u guys are at but its not too hard getting a gig at a coffee shop or bar when u play jazz. As far a soul, R&B and blues goes just remember ur only as good as your rhythm section
I'm a pianist. I'm predominantly classically trained, but I am a jazz pianist as well. Of course, I'm still improving on the mechanics, and the form of jazz, and all of that - music is a lifestyle my friend, not a destination I have jammed with a fair share of jazz musicians, and with an ample amount of other musicians as well. My only advice is.. Taking it that you two are already used to playing with each other, and or with other musicians, playing out at small low-key gigs shouldn't be an issue. In fact, I think it's a great idea what you two are doing, it's great experience. I'm also assuming you guys know some standards that you could play out? Always learn some jazz standards before playing out at a jazz gig. Remember mate, aside from the written standard, in jazz solo improvisation, there's no such thing as wrong notes, only unexpected ones I love that. Just let loose and have fun.
