  1. Hey GC, im lookin to find a electricians opinion on a quote i was given to do a small residential job for me. A friend is doing the work for me, and im trying to find out whether his quote is appropriate.

I need a 60amp fuse panel and the old (6), 2-wire romex wires to be run into a new 200amp breaker box and the plumbing through the wall and up the outside wall to meter base and weatherhead replaced to accommodate the new wire for the 200amp service.

let me know what you think! thanks:hello:

  2. So your taking your old 60A main and hooking it up as a subpanel to a new 200A service? Or he is taking your 60A subpanel and hooking it up to a different main?

either way, what do you want to know specifically? I cant tell what ur asking

  3. Sounds like you are doing a simple service upgrade. I've done these before. It's a one day job, no big deal. Installing the socket requires working with live wires, not something for a weekend electrician. Parts and labor start at $600 around here.

  4. basically i need my old 60A fuse panel updated to a 200amp service. the house has old 2wire wires run throughout, i plan on replacing them as i redo each room at a time and updating them to the normal romex used now, BUT since i dont want to lose power to each of those rooms, i want to tie those into the new 200A service panel. Since i have an old 60A setup, i need to also replace the old meter base, and plumbing to the weather head ( maybe 15 foot long).

i am trying to figure out a ballpark price someone would charge if they had to do this job.

was that a little more clear?

  5. no live wires will be worked with. we plan on building the new service about 4 ft away from the old one, do the outside weatherhead plumbing work, , then let the electric company run the big cable from the transformer to the meter base to turn on the new build. only live wires to work with are the ones that need moved from the old panel to the new one after the elec. co. runs the new wire to allow me to have 200A.

  6. That makes it even easier. I was thinking the original meter sock would be removed and replaced in the exact same spot but anyway... I did the same thing with my place. Went from 4 fuses to 20 breakers. Most of the house was tied to 3 circuits! After AC, garage, hot water, and other things, there are only 3 empty spots in the box. Glad I didn't go for a smaller box.

  7. yea big bulbs, i figured this would make the job easier as well. any way my buddy shot me a quote of 1000$ to do the job, and i feel like i can pay any company that and have i would have the job done yesterday. i dont think i should use him now that you said this should be a 600$~ job.

and ill take your advice and be sure to use a 20 slot panel.

  8. Depends on where you live you may have to get a permit and inspection before the power company will hook up a new mast. Your Electrician buddy should know the answer to this. This allways has to be done where I live. Home owner can pull the permit and I help them with the work.

Was that $1000 for just labor? Becouse thats not a buddy price. $400-$600 is a buddy price for a panel change out. If i buy everything then it would be $1000

I usally do a 200 amp 42 breaker panel with hook for a generator where the transfer switch is allready installed in the panel. Plenty of circuts for anything that they want installed later and if power goes out, the hook up for the generator is waiting.

BUT im not there to look at all the problems that could pop up. The Electrician might see something that i cant read about.

You could have a pro sparky come in and give you a FREE price quote. This would be a good way to see what the differance is.

    Hope this helps
