This is my 5th year growing and I found a couple bag seeds that were from the most incredible shit I’ve probably ever smoked and I really want to take a couple clones and pollinate them.. however I only grow outdoors so I’m nervous about having a male around. I have 2 acres and I can probably hide the male on the other side of the house and hopefully the wind won’t carry the pollen all the way to the back. I’m aware this is probably going to be a disaster but if ive ever found something worth the attempt I’d say this is it. I’ve got 3 grandi Candi regs from grandiflora which I’m going to try to hopefully get a decent male out of as well as a handful of other regs that I think would potentially compliment the flavor/color of the bud I found the seeds in. Does anyone have any general advice, concerns, or precautions? Also what are your thoughts on getting 2 clones off the bag seed plant and reversing one and pollinating the other one? I posted here last year in one of the forum sections on this subject but unfortunately a bunch of people just argued back and forth about how they’ll be super hermie prone vs. a bunch of people saying the opposite and I wasn’t too sure who was right lol
Males seem to produce pollen before females really get going. Especially once you've identified them as male, some hard pruning can keep them small and easier to manage. Even a small plant can produce enough pollen to make hundreds of seeds. I think it'd be worth it just to stay on top of trimming the male parts until you need them to selectively pollenate certain buds on the females. Once the ballskis get so far along in their development, you can even twisty tie a paper bag around them to keep the pollen from flying everywhere. Then carefully take the bag and use a paint brush to selectively pollenate buds. I mean... if you can take a clone of the male and grow it indoors in a window, that'd probably work too. It'd reduce the risk of overly pollenating your entire crop but still provide enough pollen to do what you need. I have a feeling that separating the plants amongst the house won't help. The male will pollenate anything within like an 1/8th mile or something.
Pollen can easily travel 2 miles or more. You're not going to have happy neighbors if anyone grows within that area. As far as reversing a clone and getting pollen from it. I've made 10's of thousands of feminized photo-period seeds. It's easy and I have shown it step by step in my journal and in the breeding section. I also showed how to make CS with a home made CS generator. I have even started making feminized auto-flower crosses and am currently back crossing an auto flower and a high CBG hemp plant. ohspyro89 makes some good suggestions. But, outdoor breeding is something that should be tried only by someone that has a lot of experience with breeding and handling pollen. Good luck @ToKKin .
yeah I was thinking about maybe just putting a bunch of clones in a window. I really shouldn’t need too much pollen especially since I think I’m going to also pollinate a couple little clones too just because I don’t want to bring pollen in the garden. And I’ve also heard that rain will ruin the pollen anyway so that’s another thing to think about. luckily nobody else grows outdoor here. Also I live on an extremely densely wooded mountain so I’d imagine the pollen would travel at least a little less distance through all these trees
Do not flip both clones at the same time. If you're reversing a female clone to make feminized pollen. Your female "Seed Plant" will mature well before your reversed pollen donor drops pollen. I start spraying CS one week before I flip to flower and don't flip my female for another week or your pollen will not be ready when your female is at her peak. We need to have enough flowering time left for the seed to mature. I find when using CS to reverse a female it will take 4 weeks of 12/12 for a good pollen drop. The female is just mature enough around week 3 to take the pollen.
Ok good to know. So since I’m growing outdoors do you think I could do something like buy a cheap grow lamp and put the one I’m trying to get pollen off of under like 24-48 hrs of light and then bring it outside to trigger flower earlier? Or would that not work?
In my area we currently have a little over 15 hours of daylight outside. Your plants won't flower with 15 hours of sunlight. You could spray one clone with CS for a week. Then you'll need to have an area to use light deprivation for around a week to initiate flowering the pollen donor all while spraying CS daily. Then add the female in your dark area as well. I keep spraying my pollen donor until I see the pollen sacs start to open. I find that varies depending on the strain. HTH
