Anti-Depressants, looking for advice

  1. Well for a while I have kind of thought Ive had depression. Not just being down, but being really bad, and its in the family. Anyways for a while I felt I could fight this all myself, and it was ok, but some bad things have happened recently and it is kind of scary to see how deep I can go with this in bad times, and so I've just been thinking about talking to my parents/doctor about maybe some pills.

Anyways, Ive heard they tend to turn people into zombies, I really dont know, and all Im looking for is some advice from people who have been on, or are still on anti depressants. I dont need any advice on anything else or whatever, just any first hand facts of what you can tell me.

    Thanks a lot.

Oh, and this obviously isnt going to be my only source of information, so just tell me straight how its been for you. I just thought it would be nice to talk to some people who might have some good first hand accounts.

  2. The first thing they're going to try to do is cure you naturaly. If you have a chemical imbalance they might tell you to get more sleep or some other things. Which more sleep can actually make you feel 1000% better. I don't know you're personal situation so I can't personally help. Seeing a doctor would never hurt and if you really feel depressed than I'd say go for it.

  3. Hey man,

I'm currently on my way off depresants. At my peak I was on 150 mg zoloft, i'm now down to 75, and decreasing by 25 mg a month. Because you mentioned your parents, i'm assuming you live with them (correct me if i'm wrong). If thats true, they probably play a big part in your life. I would say talk to them, especially if they've been through it before. Before you get all worked up about pills, talk to a psychiatrist. Chances are he'll either refer you to a therapist (if he doesnt do it himself), or put you on pills and refer you to a therapist.

The pills really didn't do anything to me physically. I wasnt a zombie or anything, i really didnt feel any different. But dont expect the pills to do everything. For me, i think the therapy helped more than the pills, but there really is no way to be sure. Just make sure you fully utalize both, and not just ignore the therapy thinking the pills will be magic (i had that mis-conception before being treated for my depression). The pills will take several weeks to do anything, so give them time, and dont be anxious to up the dosage just because 1 week later you dont feel anything.

Good luck with everything. I know how horrible depression can be. Just remember that no matter how bad it gets, no matter what, it WILL get better.

    peace.

  4. Thanks for that reply Tbika. I dont live with my parents but of course we are close and theyve been through it with my mom so ya. Also I really dont want to take pills I guess, so a better question to have posted would of been asking what methods have worked in overcoming depression, and what hasnt, and what where the side effects, which you answered well.

  5. try out some 5-HTP to increase seratonin

  6. Dont waste your time and money on anti-depressants. They don't work and are no fun. I tried just about everything for depression and weed is the only thing that helps.

  7. Thats interesting, if you have the time or the want could you elaborate more perhaps? Kind of vague as is

  8. i've been on them a couple of times in my life,+ actually felt some relief right away. effexor especially worked lke a charm for me. and coming off them feels even better; life is sparkly again. and while ur going thru this bad patch, it helps alot to talk w/ a therapist, & to remember...this too shall pass. good luck & god bless.

  9. Try taking some B complex vitamins everyday with some green tea supplements. The B complex replinishes seretonin and green tea gives you energy. This is what worked for me.

  10. yeah i was prescribed some effexor xr for my anxiety and it turned me into a big zombie....i never got sad but i was never happy....the effects on my anxiety were minimal....so instead of calling my dr and slowly getting off it i just stopped taking it which made the anxiety worse than before for about a month....my hopes on my anxiety ever being controlled with drugs is slim to none....weed actually does help but i think maybe if i can take a different approach to looking at life in general i may be able to "treat" it myself but thats much easier said than done

  11. hm...

I really dont think thats the best advice. That works for you jackattack, and thats great, but anti depresants do work for some people, and weed is most deffinitely not a good idea for an anti depresant, in fact it can make it worse if used heavily.

  12. The best way to get over stress and depression is to take a break from your regular schedule, go out, and take good sleep. This helps in clearing the mind and try consulting a specialist who can suggest you as how you can get over your problem. There are various prescription drugs to get over anxiety and depression, but these should only be used in accordance with the instruction of a physician. There is a lot of fake selling of such medicines on internet, so before you can order it online just make sure it is a real pharmacy. I am having it from http://www.xanax-effects.com

  13. I recently began taking Paxil CR again after a 2 year break. I had been diagnosed with GAD years ago. The past few weeks stress of working 24 hour shifts had just gotten to me big time I had a nasty panic attack that sent me to the hospital.

I dont turn into a zombie with it and i dont experience any of the sexual side effects. Sometimes you just have to try out a few of the different SSRI's until you get a good match for your body chemistry. Lexapro was shit IMHO but paxil allows me to just chill like everybody else and think and react rationally.

  14. I was put on Paxil and I gained 40 lbs in 2 months. Not good...after I stopped taking them and switched to Wellbutrin, the pounds came off as quickly as they came on. The main thing with antidepressants is they take an average 2 wks to actually get into your system and just as long to get out. You cant just up and quit or you will have withdrawal symptoms. You have to gradually wean yourself off. Also, I did have the sexual side effects on Paxil. Now I dont take anything. I just tell myself it's mind over matter. When I go to bed at night, that's when my mind races, so I keep the TV on in the room with the sleep timer on so it shuts off after I go to sleep. If you dont look at the tv and just concentrate on hearing it, your mind wont be scattered all over and you will be able to sleep.
