Hi, I'm new to the forum and new to growing in general. I'm about 45 days (from sprout, March 27th) into my grow and I'm facing some problems with yellowing/browning of the edges. I started giving it nutrients at (FF Grow Big) at about 50% first and then 75% of the recommended dose when it seemed to respond well. About a week or so ago I pruned it quite heavily as it is a short and squat plant and had lots of foliage around the main stalk...I may have gone overboard as I did remove a lot of material, basically most of the growth that wasn't main branches, their tops or fan leaves. Within a few days I noticed the browning/yellowing at the tips and around the edges. I'd had some before earlier in growth on the lower leaves but solved that problem by adjusting temp/humidity. Unfortunately, since I pruned and upped it to higher dosage for feeding the problems have affected the top growth (topped once, 2 tops). In addition, my cat ate a quite a few leave tips, not to severe but I do worry about bacteria. I am worried it's an infection caused either by pruning/cat attack, but it also could be a toxicity from the upped nutrients. I also don't/haven't watered it through so that water drains out the bottom when I've watered it so far...is this an issue? I also don't/haven't read PH of anything yet (no real issues til now) and just let tap water sit about 24hrs beforehand. I realize there is a host of variables but based on time alone I didn't have any serious issues til pruning/heavier dosage of nutrients. Below in some info about the grow and pictures. I'd appreciate any experienced input a lot. Please and thanks! - Indoor closet, about 2x5 feet, no intake/outtake. Leave the door fully open a lot when I'm there or a cracked a few inches (chain lock) when I'm not or completely closed overnight (still small cracks which air/alight get through) - Bag seeds, from a bud that was supposedly a 'green crack' strain. - Black gold (npk 5-0-0) with additional perlite I mixed in at about a 1/4 ratio. - Foxfarm Big Grow only so far npk 6-4-4 - I think it's a 3 gallon pot - Global star '300 watt' Led ( i think the veg lights draw around 70w) above + 1x42w cfl on one side and 2x23w cfl on the other - Small fan - Timer 18/6 View image: 13072272 10153655685008693 1284208940 o View image: 13169868 10153655685208693 177934826 o View image: 13184790 10153655685103693 2086909192 o View image: 13184751 10153655684898693 133292906 o View image: 13210915 10153655684973693 1427921840 o View image: 13211055 10153655683733693 1889409562 o View image: 13214559 10153655685253693 1643298727 o
Try posting the pics right in here. If you are on mobile, the "upload a file" button right below "submit" will do the trick. It would make helping a lot easier. You know what they say, "a picture is worth 1000 words."
Definitely check that pH! If it is too high or low it could cause chlorosis. That means that chlorophyll levels are low, and photosynthesis becomes less effective! That could end in death of your plant... And nobody likes funerals. So try to keep the pH between 5.5 and 6.5 (but 6 should be perfect). Thats definitely a good first step!
I've always been told you judge the overall health of the plant by the new growth and yours looks fine. My guess is it's a little nute burn, but certainly nothing significant at this point. Not much you do to that plant is going to change the fact that it's a short squatty plant. I'm growing some like that right now....feminized Blueberry, and I vegged them for 3 months and none of the 10 ever got over around 18 inches in height. But what some seriously beautiful buds it is producing. I've got one that is about 3 weeks or so from harvest and it loaded with good buds. If I had a larger BTU air conditioner and could drop the temp some more, I could get that "blue" color going before harvest, but not going to make it on this one. Hopefully, by the time the next one is ready to harvest, I'll have the larger air conditioner in and can make those coming on turn color for me. I'm anxious to try the strain though. It was a gift from a friend and I know pretty much nothing about it. I've never seen a plant with node spacing that tight before I started messing with this stuff. But your plant is good. The stuff at the bottom or on the older leaves is just normal die off of leaves. It happens and doesn't mean a thing other than that those leaves are done for. As long as what's coming out with new growth is good...and as far as I can tell, yours is fine, you have no worries. TWW
Thanks that is helpful, I am definitely most concerned about new growth and there is some discolouration quite high up just not right at the top. My concern, with the relatively heavy pruning I did (basically just left the fan leaves, main stems and their heads) was/is that it's an infection. I'll be grabbing some distilled water for it's first flush and maybe that will clear things up (?). Then I'll get a PH/PPM meter and keep that in check. Since mine is in a closet with no intake/outake except that the door is 2 inches above the floor, I can't even fathom the troubles/glory adding aircon to the mix would bring. Don;t mean to drift too much, but since we mentioned airflow I've been concerned about my flowering period considering my setup. I read that to flower the plants must receive absolutely no light for 12hrs. This seems to be gospel and for that reason I can't just shut the closet door with the various spaces and cracks (also my air intake when it's closed) and the easiest/most efficient way I could think to block the light would be some kind black sheet that light couldn't penetrate and just cover the entire door (outside or in, not sure it makes a difference....outside seems more convenient for quick install/removal. If I managed to pull this off, the 2 plans I have would be cut off from air for the full 12 hrs. The closet is approx 2.5 deep, maybe 5 feet wide and 12 feet high (not there cant measure now). Will they do ok in those conditions? I cant be drilling holes in a rented apartment closet for proper intake/outtake. Any suggestions? Or is my black sheet solution suitable for the circumstances?
