For the first time in 72 years the AMA officially recognizes that marijuana has both already-demonstrated and future-promising medical utility! This is amazing! Chronic City: American Medical Association Reverses Position, Calls For Review of Medical Pot - San Francisco News - The Snitch
This is a huge step forward. The AMA never said what it would reclassify it as though... Schedule II or III? It seems like momentum for legalization is gained every month with all of the stuff in the news, and the end of raids on dispensaries and patients.
They are supposed to be objective and look at the studies and research and THEN decide what it should be classified as.
Oh ok. Well Marinol is Schedule III so it seems like it would make sense to put cannabis as Schedule III as well. The only disappointing thing about the article is that the AMA said something about working to develop alternative cannabanoid medicines. That sounds like marinol type stuff. I don't know why they never mention edibles or vaporizers as an alternative solution to smoking.
so what does this mean? if its resqueduled do they just recognize it as having medical value? or are penalties less severe?
my dad is a doctor who believes cannabis has no medical value. i should find the ama's report on this and tell him to put it in his pipe and smoke it
First- amazing! (And about damn time.) Second- I hope they aren't beating around the bush and actually petition AG Eric Holder to re-classify SOON. If they rely on the DEA with their monopoly to do "additional research" we all know the outcomes would be one of two things: 1) Nothing would happen, or 2) "big pharma" and the government (which would probably swallow up the pharma makers like everything else) would make it into the next "profit model" rather than explore affordable, effective , safe, and easy to get medicine for all.
Here's another great read on this. Way to go AMA! ASAÂ :Â AMA Report Recognizes Medical Benefits of Marijuana, Urges Further Research
72 years?? wow they are some slow ass bastards . I'm pretty sure they knew of it benefits when it was legal like about 100 years ago.....there was bottles of Indica everywhere. They couldn't just dig up some old files and call it a day??
The AMA im guessing has finally found a way they can profit off the cannabanoids with synthetic versions they can produce and patent . It would be a sad day if marijuana remained illegal while Pharmaceutical companies profited. Edit: According to the article, the AMA has choosen to reverse their view of cannabis due to obama's recent announcment that patience and physicians will not be prosecuted/terminated for stances on cannabis . Orrrr something to that effect.
Correction TBolg, it IS a sad day, as marijuana is illegal and pharmaceutical companies are profiting.
I don't want to get too excited because there is still plenty of work to be done, but I think this is some of the biggest news in the history of cannabis prohibition.
I saw an AMA official on Lou Dobbs this evening stating they want to see 2-3 years of FDA-approved studies. Until people are not being put in jail, nothing has changed. Everyone already knows its safer than anything the FDA has EVER approved. I smell big pharma profits.
