Am I wrong to rat out my neighbors for smoking?

  1. Okay, so let me give information here...

My roommate and I moved into our new apartment about 3 months ago. We decided that we were not going to smoke inside because our new place is a part of a unit instead of townhome like our old place. We've been very diligent when we smoke outside and have actually been smoking less since it's difficult to smoke at our new place. The apartment is definitely an upgrade from where we used to live.

About 3 weeks ago, we got some new neighbors that moved into the unit below ours. From day 1 and ever since they have been ripping it up in their apartment. You can smell it in my roommate's room and heavy in the common hallways. We knew this might be trouble because the other neighbors in the unit seem like people that would mind the smell. We have ignored it because 1. We smoke 2. It hasn't caused us any problems. Although, having your apartment smell like bud all the time can get annoying.

Today a cop knocked on our door and told us that the neighbors have been calling often and complaining of smelling weed. Luckily he was a pretty chill dude and basically said he dosen't mind if smoke but make sure they can't smell anything. He says the next time they have to come out they are searching the apartment. We didn't say anything about the guys downstairs to the cop. After he left my roommate and I talked about it. It looks extra suspect on our part because I believe we are the youngest people there (both 21) We don't have any bud right now and haven't smoked in 2 weeks but we do have a grinder, bowl, and live in Indiana where laws are strict.

If we were searched they'd find the bowl and grinder, but we're thinking about seeing if we can have a buddy take them or throw them away. The way I see it we can either get fined, evicted from the apartment, and at the worst jail for a short time for the paraphenelia. We both have pretty good jobs for a young age and I don't want to have to try to explain why I didn't show up for work one day or have to go apartment hunting with an eviction on my credit.

Please let me know if I'm overthinking this and if I'm way out of line about thinking of going to management and letting them know our downstairs neighbors are smoking.

  2. You or them eh.

How many people in the complex?

  3. In the complex total...I'm not sure. In our particular building I'd say there's 8 apartments downstairs and 8 upstairs.

Its you or them..id talk confidentially to the building manager.

if the cops come back tell em they have the wrong apartment and they should speak to the building manager.

  5. Eh I'd be complaining before the cops come again and you end up getting in trouble... to many people and I'd imagine to many families to be smoking like that... when I was in my apartment I only smoked at the opened window so it blows away or out in the car or a quick drive to the park depending on the time...

  7. That was my thought. There are people with kids that live in our building and a elderly couple to my knowledge.

  8. Talk to your stoner neighbors and tell them to tone it down cuz the cops are commin' round

  9. Don't snitch on your neighbors. Go talk to them. If they don't agree, then then report it.

  10. Just don't be to friendly with em and I wouldn't tell them that you smoke or else I'd bet they'd share that info if the cops came knocking again to save their own asses. Eh I'd say in this situation it'd be best to speak to management it's just not smart to smoke in certain locations...

  11. I doubt they will search your apartment based on someone smelling pot. There's no way they'd know it was coming from your place so I think they were bluffing you about that. If I was in your shoes I'd talk to the smokers and keep my mouth shut otherwise.

  14. I wouldn't snitch them in to the police, personally I'd go have a talk with them and explain that you also smoke but go outside if they dont seem to get the message I'd just straight up call whoever your renting off and tell him that your neighbors are smoking and the smells getting in your apartment

  15. few tings are worse than a snitch imo so yes you are wrong for that.

  16. Honestly I'd go talk to your neighbors and be like yo look can you guys not smoke as much or go somewhere els because my whole apartment smells like dank and the cops just came by thinking it was me, then say I didn't snitch because I smoke a lil bit my self (makes u sound cool and not a dick) im just warning y'all that other people around here have been noticing it. And I don't want to be forced to move out. Thanks again and walk away.

  17. Dude go to the neighbors. Tell them what happened. Let them know you can smell it and all. Even offer to roll up with them sometime or something. But just out back, or somewhere where you won't have those repurcussions. If they cop an attitude or anything then I'd go ahead and say something to someone else honestly. That's your livelihood you're talking about.

  18. If someone's sloppiness is putting you at legal risk, fuck 'em. You do not owe anyone your freedom or a mark on your criminal record.

I'm not saying go straight to the police, like a lot of people have said, try whoever is managing your apartment complex first, you can have a chat with them face to face. Give them a chance to clean up their act (and by that, I mean get their smell problem under control) and until they handle their business, make sure your place is squeaky clean. There are some states where you can afford to take a lax stance, it doesn't sound like yours is one of them.

  19. Talk to your neighbors but there is no need to let them know you smoke. Why trust a stranger with that info, especially ones that don't know better then to reek up the place so much that 5-0 shows up.
