Alice and Wonderland: Thumbs up or down?

Discussion in 'Movies' started by Hubert J. Farnsworth, Mar 7, 2010.

  1. I havent seen the movie yet and I keep getting mixed responses about it, but it mostly looks like the movie was a shitty letdown and nobody wants to admit it because of how siked everybody was. So for those who have seen it, thumbs up or thumbs down? and try to post why you think so.

  2. I gave it a thumbs up because I liked the messages that the movie was trying to deliver.
But I thought there would be a lot more to it. & a lot of parts made no sense to me haha

My opinion might not be the best though because I saw it rolling & high as fuck, therefore I couldn't pay attention at all.
I would often just zone out on one part of the screen while the characters just talked & talked hahaha

From what I can remember though it was still a pretty good movie :]

3D is kinda whatever. I got in free though & the 3D glasses looked pretty cool haha

  3. i thought it ended in a rush and went straight down after that
its a good movie its just way over hyped, my expectations were too high, and had some random shit like the dancing haha

people should just watch for the experience but not really for the plot or storyline whatever, that was a huge let down....for me at least

  4. i havent seen it but if its anything like the willie wonka remake then its probably crap

  5. Definitely didn't help the movie to have so much hype.

I thought it was the biggest movie letdown this year. I LOVE Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, and I really love them together, but this movie was sooooooooo bad. I wish I didn't pay my money to go see it.

See it for yourself of course, but don't rush. Not worth sitting in a packed theatre for that movie.

  6. yea im looking more forward to Rum Diary than this movie....i probably will go see it in 3D but im gonna wait till next week probably

  7. there werent enought 3d effects. that to me was the only thing intresting about this movie. that and the caterpillar dude. the smoke from his hookah was cool.

  8. Me n a friend grabbed some shrooms, smoked a few bowls and got lost for a while. Good time lol. Quite the jumble of crap to sift through while trippin, but wuite entertaining.

  9. I thought the movie was way too "plotty" if you know what I mean. It was way too block-bustery for me. I wanted a movie that didn't really have a plot, like the first movie, where she is just searching for a rabbit the majority of the time. I mean, I wanted it to have some sort of logical progression, but I wanted everything in the movie to be a new experience. For example, when Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum were introduced along with the mouse, and the rabbit, I thought it was an overload. I want an individual scene introducing each character again, in random circumstances.

For me, it wasn't really Alice in Wonderland...

More like a block-buster movie, that used characters from Alice in Wonderland...

  10. It was WizzzzzACK.I saw it yesterday and it was how i guessed it,Tim Burton fucked up charlie and the chocolate factory and he fucked up this one just as bad. all in all it was a 2 out of 5.Rather watch the cartoon.

  11. expected a lot more

  12. The 3D effects where cool at first because I have never seen a 3D movie before... But I got bored before half way through maybe that's because I went buzzed off whiskey instead of being stoned and I started losing my buzz and getting tired.

Id rather they make a 3D version of the original Alice And Wonderland.
That was way more trippy and colorful and kept me enthused the whole time.

  13. I was very excited to see this movie...when i knew it was coming out i made sure to re-watch the cartoon to refresh myself with the story.

I must say for as much as i love the cartoon, the new one just didn't cut it for me.

I still would give it an overall thumbs up because it was entertaining and a nice resolution to the story; however, it just doesn't compare with the innocence of the first one.

There are no songs at all in the new one; i guess the hatter has a little dance thing at the end, but otherwise there is no singing or anything fun like that. One of my favorite things about the cartoon is how each character has their own song to sing to alice. Instead, i felt as though the new one is a lot darker and more serious which is not what i was looking for.

Still, I am glad i saw the movie. It was nice to see the same characters again but this time either as real people or with new animations. The cheshire cat is awesome.

The humor just isn't there. I don't think i really laughed at all during the movie.

Well, after writing this review i almost feel as though i am trying to make up for the poorness of the movie by highlighting some of the parts i liked. Oh well. Worth seeing but i hate how i wasted 10 bucks on it.

P.S. Anyone see it in 3D? I wonder if thats any better. I couldn't justify the extra 5 bucks on a ticket

I think some people are disappointed because it wasn't exactly like Alice in Wonderland from Disney.
Just like some people seemed to be disappointed that Charlie and the Chocolate factory wasn't exactly like the original movie. (though I hear it was a bit more like the book)

It seems to me that people only want remakes of their favorite movies and nothing more. They don't want Alice to be any different than when she was a cartoon and they don't want Willy Wonka to be any different than his portrayal in 1971.
TBH, it makes no sense to me, why would Burton deliberately copy everything from the original movies and not try to make a new and interesting way of looking at the story? Not only is that a lawsuit waiting to happen, but I have a hunch that people would be upset with that as well, saying that Burton wasn't "creative" enough and how they didn't think he was going to "copy" the original movies. Either way Burton loses because he was either too original or not original enough.

I also don't get why people willingly buy into hype. I learned a long long time ago that you do not get into any hype whatsoever, you're setting yourself up for possible disappointment.

I agree that it was a bit too "plotty", I never fully saw the original Disney version from start to finish, but even I noticed there was a bit too much plot involved. No biggie though, if there was such thing as a perfect movie we wouldn't really be making so many right?
I thought it could have been a bit more outrageous visually, but given that Disney already provided the visuals for many of the characters, the only thing left for Burton to do is to put his own spin on them. The cards are given armor, The Red Queen is not fat this time but deformed, The Mad Hatter isn't two feet tall but rather taller than Alice herself, The Chershire Cat is blue and gray and not purple. There's only so much you can do, really.

I think the aim for 3d kind of took away some potential for the rest of the story (not the plotiness tho), but I was impressed with the whole thing nonetheless. Surely there's something we all could think of that would have made the movie better, which relieves me since we all have the tools to make our own Alice in Wonderland movies right at our fingertips; we only need to use them. Perhaps there should be a contest to see who could do better?

All in all I give it a thumbs up, its a good movie if you're not wanting a Disney ripoff and are open to the director's take on the story (or rather the sequal to the story).

  15. immediately after seeing the movie, i couldn't even think of a scene that really stood out to me.. no favorite parts at all. the queen of hearts and the chesire cat were probably the coolest characters, but they couldn't make up for the rest of the movie.

when i think of Alice in Wonderland, i think of a colorful, fun adventure. this wasn't what i expected, but i also didn't see it in 3D, so maybe i didn't get the full experience haha.

  16. i thought it was good but not great.

I saw this last night - after 2 bowls + 2 beers... started nodding off and felt asleep about 30 mins in...

It was in 3d so that was cool ... but I think seeing Avatar 3D high has ruined seeing movies high for me... now it is just kind of foggy and almost boring -

I wouldn't waste any shrooms on this movie - seems that some people here were doing that

  18. saw it sober the first time, and it was the epitome of mediocrity. lousy plot, iffy acting, too much jumping around. major letdown.

saw it after gravitying it up multiple times the second time, and it was one of the most mind blowing things i've ever seen. but i was only focusing on the graphics and design, which i thought were okay the first time around, and i was blazed as shit the whole time, so i probably would've even enjoyed just watching a blank screen for two hours.

thus, thumbs down. didn't meet expectations, shouldn't have to be retardedly inebriated to enjoy the movie.

  19. Saw it tripping sack and not even that could save the 3d for me. Saw it sober a second time and still wasnt worth it so definite let down

  20. over hyped? yes.

    bad? no.

    great? eh

i think they did a good job in showing that every one in wonderland is mad. thats why there was "too much jumping around"

and i did enjoy the cheshire cat, reminds me of my cat, you know, with out the glowing fur.
