So I have always thought about moving to Alaska. When I watch the Alaska state troopers show on natgeo they talk about there being a lot of crime and alcholism. Now I understand that not all of Alaska is like that. Im wondering what cities or towns are the best places to live? I would love to find a place with a few nice restaurants and cool little art galleries. Any suggestions?
Actually a lot of Alaska is like that. Anchorage is the most dangerous city but it's also the biggest, really the only fun place. Fairbanks is the second biggest there's not really much crime not that I know of. There's good restaurants, a museum in town and one on campus at University of Alaska Fairbanks. North Pole is by Fairbanks it's kind of like a suburb. Those are cities that have the most things to do. Alaska is pretty lame in general but a lot of people like it. Maybe you will..
I live in Alaska, so... I can tell you that we have some of the highest alcohol, drug, and domestic abuse rates in the country (a lot of it in the more northern, rural areas due to lack of education & small populations) and that our largest city, Anchorage, has quite a high rate of crime and is full of drug users and violence. I'm moving there next month, and I can tell you I'm actually really excited even though it's got a lot of crime because I know there will be a lot of shit to do. Much bigger city. Anyways, I can also tell you that as a former citizen of some of the median sized towns, they're ridiculously safe, especially for kids. There's little to no violent crime. I wouldn't raise my kid here just because I hate Alaska, but... (A warning here though: A lot of kids & teens here turn to sex and drugs and drinking really early because there's just nothing else to entertain themselves with. There's no real crime or violence, but there's quite a bit of substance abuse.) I would steer clear of this place. There are some chill here, some amazing sights, sure... but it's dark all the time in the winter, it's depressing as all get out, and if you live on one of the islands or smaller towns you're fucked for most activities & night life. Plus, it's freeeeeezing cold, and nobody ever tells you that in most parts of Alaska it rains more than it snows because it's a RAINFOREST. That means a lot of slush, and the kind of cold that seeps into your booooones. I suppose if you enjoy the small town life, there are quite a few popular bars... ahaha. Anyways, as you can see, I'm born and raised here and I would rather be anywhere else. But I'm a chick, so if you're a manly man and you're into hunting and fishing and camping and fourwheeling and snowboarding and hiking and beer and freezing your balls of and all that, it might just be the life for you. :] Oh, you also asked for specific cities. Be aware that housing in most of Alaska is ridiculously expensive, but in Juneau or Anchorage you'll be much more likely to find some work than a lot of places in the US right now. Some of the safer upper/middle sized towns include: Fairbanks Ketchikan Juneau Sitka (Most of these towns will have lots of touristy things like art galleries, fur galleries, restaurants, etc, especially in the summer because they thrive on tourism.)
I don't live there but to let you know you're legally allowed to have up to a qp on your private property
