Aerating soil?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by RookieGrower420, May 4, 2011.

  1. Has anyone ever considered aerating potted soil or soil-less mix to promote oxygen flow to your root ball?

  2. Yes a few people have.

  3. its called perlite.

  4. I have perlite in my soil. I thought it was for holding moisture. That's why its used in fungus ops to promote high humidity.

Also, any good results with the aerating?? Do you know of a good tech?

  5. it also helps keep the soil from compacting, keeping air flow to the roots. check out smart pots!!!!! they are great for air flow through the roots. i'll never use anything but them again.

  6. First off, Perlite is primarily used for its drainage characteristics rather than for holding water. When a soil mix holds too much water, perlite is added and the mix won't soak up quite as much. It does break up tangled or solid soils as well, helping with aeration.

There's manual aeration and there's permanent aeration. Manually can be done the same way as with lawns; poking holes into the soil. Permanent aeration involves changes in the soil or container to create a substrate that supplies more air to the roots. The problem that too much permanent aeration causes is drying out the roots. Personally, I've had good results using a breathable container covered with a sheath that's spaced slightly away from container sides, blocking direct air.
