I decided to make a tincture over the weekend. Being my first attempt, I made a small batch (one ounce). I didn't try to make it smaller because the percentage of loss would have been greater.

After reading a few recipes, I decided that if a decent quick wash hash can be made with just 30-60 seconds per wash, then I should be able to do the same with my tincture. I didn't want to wait the 60 days that most people seem to use.

Since I was making an edible tincture, I obviously used Everclear, and not ISO, so I'd need to use a 3-6 minute soak time instead.

    Ingredients:

    1 oz of Everclear
4 g of cannabis bud (since this was a test I just used some Sativa predominate hybrid bud that I didn't like to vape, and had designated for cooking)
    1 preserve jar for mixing
1 sheet of aluminum foil (to bake the cannabis on)

    Procedure:

I baked the cannabis in the oven at approximately 240F for 20 minutes. I didn't want to go above 246F, since there are terpenes, that have anti-inflammatory properties that I wanted to preserve.

Once it was finished baking, I placed the baked cannabis in the freezer for a few minutes to stop it from cooking off any further.

Next I crushed the cannabis and placed it in the preserve jar, poured in one once of Everclear, capped the jar, and shook it for six minutes. I then filtered it through an empty tea bag.

The tincture was very green, and looked like algae infested water. So, six minutes, is probably too long, since I picked up quite a bit of chlorophyll.

One ounce of Everclear is approximately 30ml, however, I only got back approximately 20ml of tincture. The rest being absorbed by the teabag and the cannabis left in the tea bag. This also means that each eyedropper of the tincture contains roughly 0.2g of cannabis extract.

    To test:

To test it, I put one eyedropper (1ml) of the tincture in approximately two ounces of water, and mixed it up. I swished it around in my mouth like a mouthwash, to try and get as much as I could to absorb through the lining of my mouth and tongue, and the swallowed it.

    OMG, This stuff tastes nasty!

Within 15 minutes a head high came on. It was about half the strength of what I normally get when I vape, but much less harsh (I don't care for sativas).

Within about an hour, the rest of the high came on (both head and body), and it was about 80% of my normal high. This lasted for approximately three hours and then tapered off. What remained was a pretty strong body stone, that was extremely mellow and sedating. This lasted for another three hours, and then tapered off for another hour. All in all the effects lasted 6-7 hours.

So, IMO (and the opinion of the BF) this tincture was a success:D. Next time I'll add a drop of peppermint oil to help make it a bit more palatable.

  2. Sounds like a job well done man, I might try this sometimes soon. My question though, how bad did cooking the bud reek up your house? The smell is pretty much the main reason I'm nervous against making edibles, but if I could get the smell out in less than 2 hours I might give it a shot

You could definitely smell it, especially in the oven. But it wasn't that bad. This particular strain did not have a strong odor to it, but still, I'd think it would be noticeable for a few hours.

If you use a strong smelling strain, I wouldn't try it. Not if you're in stealth.

I wonder if baking the cannabis inside one of those turkey/oven baking bags would contain the smell. You'd have to cool it down in the bag as well.
